@@slew9900 That's with old technology, we could likely reach the asteroid belt within 2-3 years now, so it would likely be 4-6 years round trip. The transition would have to be slow but if we started now we could probably have enough supply from space to completely phase out surface mining by the 2060's or 2070's. Also the quantity that they can get from asteroids is a lot more, especially if they can figure out a way to pull one into Earth orbit and mine it there. But yeah if you have 100 billion dollars there are probably better investments to choose from that have better ROI within 5-10 years, asteroid mining likely won't have an attractive ROI for another 15-20 years.

When asked about mining resources on Mars and bringing it home, Elon has said that it's not worth it because of the sheer distance and cost of transportation. He said any resource mined on Mars is better used there than bringing home. Just think about how much it costs per trip to space and how little can be carried to space per trip. Seeing as this asteroid is much farther away than Mars, I don't think it's likely he's actually planning to mine it, especially not in 2 years with the current technology. Study it, maybe. Bringing back enough of the gold on Mars to be profitable or even just cost effective is unrealistic.
