Elon very much sees which side his bread might be buttered on. He sees the Air Force as his best partner in a Mars colony with NASA as second and his own companies as third in financing. Also he gets much of his contracts from the military and NASA so he will always cater to them. His goal is to place a sustainable human peasance on Mars. He will do whatever it takes to do that.

And also, Elon says he's afraid that consciousness is a very rare thing, and that if life goes extinct on earth for some reason, it would be a terrible loss. If we are multi-planetary, the chances of survival will be much higher, in the grand scale of the universe's history.

The space force is the military, and will never live up to the high roading ideal of the federation. An ex sailor, and trek lover knows this. If we want the federation, NASA will need a lot more attention, funding, and power. I think a space force is rad too, and appreciate that it is here to defend me. Lets not kid ourselves about what it is though, which is all 100% weapon, not a peaceful exploration and diplomacy program that only fights when it has to. This branch of the military will conduct hacking, orbital surveillance, and espionage, and satellite defense, and tracking, and may one day have the ability to strike an earthbound target from orbit. It sounds cool. It sounds ominous.

The federation is structured and has foreign policy exactly like the military... also seems that it is the military for star trek... it sure does a lot of war themed episodes and movies and has ranks just like military, enforces law, has a recruitment and training program, and follows the directive of the population that supports the system. The ONLY difference would be that in Star Trek the military also has a exploration mission, one that we have no current technology to make possible but as soon as we get warp drives and meet some aliens i'm sure out military space force will add that too the mission. You have seen Star Trek right? because that show is nearly 100% military life on a space traveling carrier / destroyer ship.

​@@NeverSuspects Good point. That is not how it started, but what it became. I think it is hard not to write in war when dealing with a large armed space fleet. The deal is that the federation does not like to look at itself as a military, even when they begrudgingly have to be one. They prefer to be a scientific tool first, and if they had their way, they would never be a weapon. For a tool of peace, they sure are at war a lot. I am convinced that that is because it is almost impossible for writers to write a civilization hundreds of years more advanced, and morally superior than ours, when nobody can be sure what that looks like. It is well known that Roddenberry's original intention was not to have starfleet at war all of the time, because they are supposed to be so good at avoiding armed conflict, but as you point out, that is not what happens on screen. I still don't think it is a good comparison. I have been in the navy, and though starfleet gets it's protocol from the earth navies of the past, there is not a day that goes by, that I don't wish that the real navy could be more like the fictional starfleet. It is a cold day in hell when a real navy is truly used for exploration, and scientific advancement for the harmony of all, and not mostly it's state, though true, it has happened in the past. The space force is not an organization of peace first, and a weapon in denial. They are a weapon only and know it, embrace it, and it's members sign up knowing that, and for that. I do hope they will be better at resolving conflict in real life, than starfleet is on screen, but I know deep down that we make a space force because we fail to be more like the federation written in high ideal, trying to depict a humanity at it's best.

There already is a Starfleet Academy, it's United States Space Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Well.. even if I wouldn't argue on that (military vs peaceful exploration and diplomacy etc), there's still one issue... z Starfleet was open for ALL talented and promising candidates from within the Federation. Earth, other planets etc. It was a way to fulfil one's potential and be a part of something greater that goes beyond nations, races, planets.. Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't suppose anyone who is not from the US (and that's quite a lot of people ;)) can join? So... nope. Not even near Starfleet. However, I love Elon's remark. And yes, having a s REAL Starfleet as possible (based on the high ideals) would be amazing.
