I'm 65. Everytime an ELP album came out I had it that day. I played drums (that's my little kit in my profile pic) and I was in several rock and prog rock bands in my area. ELP was always a shining gem, phenominal musicians.

Dew on the grass, flowers with blue skies and billowing clouds. Childrens laughter, and fresh morning air. I’m blessed to have found ELP and seeing them just once. Too young to see them in the 1970s. Watching you guys react to a song I've been listening to for years is so comforting... it's like I've finally found someone with musical sensibilities and I've invited them to listen to what I appreciate. It's so rare to find good music lovers around me. In the 90s, when I was younger and I was playing these songs in my car on my roadstar cassette player, it was very common for me to hear: what a boring song! I've always had a hard time sharing my taste in music. But the web made me finally find my tribe.

Probably my favorite ELP song. The level of musicianship, the composition and the performances are so ridiculous. I love the subtle changing of the harmony in the chords in the last verse and that descending line that ends the song. Amazing how much music one man (Keith Emerson) can make; I can't even wrap my mind around it.

He loved ELP and played it often, which was my first introduction to the group starting in middle school (or what we called Jr. High--which was grades 7-9). It can be lonely being an ELP fan. Growing up, I didn't have any friends who knew of them or liked them. I can't listen to them with my wife. She's 11 years younger than I, spent the first half of her life in China, and likes only Chinese pop music. A few years before I met my wife, I dated an American girl of Japanese ancestry who was maybe 8 years older than I. She house-sat for me while I was on my annual trip to Costa Rica. I left her a note encouraging her to listen to my ELP "Welcome Back My Friends..." CD while I was away. When I returned from the trip, I didn't know what to expect, but she couldn't stop talking about how much she liked it. ELP came to our area a couple months later, and we attended the concert. They were in their 50's then, but they still put on a good show. That was the only concert of theirs that I ever attended. I was too young to see their concerts when they were in their prime, in the early 1970s, but my older sisters did. In fact, one of them went two nights in a row. At the concert, I could see Keith's hands as he played "Creole Dance" on the piano. They looked almost inhuman in their shape and proportions.

BTW in the song "Trilogy", you got two trilogies going on. One is the music which is broken into three parts, but also the lyric is 3 segments. The beginning is a relationship breaking up. The middle part is an expression of the turmoil that follows a breakup, and the end of the song is resolution of the turmoil and moving on to a new life. So, that's Trilogy. You can add in that there's the three band members and you have 3 trilogies, and now we can go in a circle.

You will notice that "The Endless Enigma, Part II" ends with Lake singing ". . . I've begun to know the reason why I'm here." It is then immediately followed on the album by "From the Beginning," with the refrain, "you were meant to be here from the beginning." So that's kind of cool.

Let's begin where we usually don't. Carl Palmer is one of the greatest drummers ever to hit the skins. Talk about tone. Every hear him thump that bass drum, I hear Bonzo knocking about. Then of course, Lake's vocals are surreal and out of this world. Then there's Emerson, he of what I like to call the trinity keys: Emerson, Lord, Wakeman. I've seen ELP in concert a few times. They put on a great show.

I don’t think any of us on here commenting can possibly properly describe to you guys what it was like to experience an ELP gig live. Sort of like stepping onto a ufo where all was different but hugely impressive, better, shocking, all of that but leaving feeling educated and enlightened. Those guys were geniuses. No argument.
@edljnehan2811 Жыл бұрын
I think I can saffy. First off I've seen every concert they did in my city starting in 1971 1973 the Brain Salad Surgery tour next 1976 where Journey opened up for them twice in 1977 and again in 1978 now this was just the 70s naturally I saw them in the following decades as well but if you've ever seen them in the early 70s it's just not the same so I rarely bring up those other concerts. ELP back in the day were considered the standard for musicianship excellence that other groups were judged by😮 so naturally the pedigree just to be in that band was totally off the chain. Carl Palmer had formal training at the guildhall School of Music. Emerson was a genius and it was even said he was a savant who started playing at around six years old. He also assisted Robert Moog in the design of his synthesizers mainly that huge console that came along on the tour. ELP were the first group to tour with the Moog synthesizer as well as being the Third progressive rock band right behind the nice and King Crimson. So you could say Keith Emerson was the first😮 Carl Palmer was trained In classical and jazz drumming and was the first to bring all of those various percussion instruments to his drum kit which inspired Neil Peart to do the same around 4 years later. Carl Palmer also designed and played the first electronic drum solo with Takata I apologize Google won't spell it right. Greg Lake originally played lead guitar for not only King Crimson but some of his earlier bands as well and only switch to Bass at the request of Robert Fripp who had told him that they didn't need a lead guitarist since those were fripp's duties. So as you see Greg Lake didn't really play bass guitar that long prior to joining ELP so he had a pick it up really quick and thus did a excellent job because he's considered one of the best bass players in rock back then😊 also I don't know if you knew elp1 all of the polls 4 best keyboard and best drums back in at least the early part of the 1970s. And of course they were all considered technical virtuoso's as well as Maestro musicians and it showed throughout their entire concert which was second to none for presentation and displaying their talents not only in the context all of the group as a whole but also individually as they all had their own little performances highlighting each of their individual talents. Keith Emerson would perform his Moog solos and piano concerto with Carl Palmer usually doing about a 20 minute drum solo which was second to none with gong's Orchestra Bells tympani electronic drums and a rotating drum kit while Lake put on a acoustic performance of elps more mellow Tunes. They usually put on a 3-hour performance theirselves as well as having some of the best opening acts. I saw Yes open up for them as well as Foghat and journey. And yes I think I'll include Deep Purple on that list because they did go on 1st at California Jam. I hope maybe I gave you some information is that you didn't know and hopefully enjoyed😊

The Fugue is a beautiful connector between the two separate parts - lyrically, they ARE separate and needed something to create a gap. As fugues go, this might be one of the very few to feature such brilliant bass guitar accompaniment.

This is one of the things I use as an intro-to-ELP standard ("Trilogy" is the other); you get a good taste of the prog and technical skill at play without needing to pack a lunch like you would for "Tarkus" or "Karn Evil 9." Of what remains on this album? "Hoedown" is a must. There's also a fantastic international-collab cover of this, featuring Rachel Flowers on piano. The sheer number of people they had to find to pull off the whole thing speaks volumes about the original, honestly.

Check out their album Per Un Amigo. I think you'll like it

Ever listen to this after getting stoned? You are missing an experience. Friend of mine used to have us over to smoke pot and this was always on his turntable. I’m 67 and I still remember how we would sit on his bed , eyes closed and take it all in. I’ve had this great work on vinyl, cassette, 8 track, cd and vinyl again {sounds best on vinyl}. No, I don’t use the evil weed anymore.

The lyrics of rebellion and disillusion are so strong here. ELP has this 'dark poetry'' lyrical style that is at once modern and quite traditional English literature based. The song is a logical argument for rejecting your "betters" that have been feeding you their own BS for their own reasons to manipulate you into doing their bidding, against your own best interests, undermining your self confidence and hopes for the future. That is why they resonate so deeply, because in the western world every young teen comes to this realization that they have been sold someone else's dreams, implanted with someone else's fears, coerced into rigid morals for purposes of control. The realization is a dark one, but leads to the light at the other end, and part 2 reflects this very well. The major tone and triumphant horns and bells lift you out of your anger at the betrayal and shine light upon the new day dawning, a day of enlightened self interest and confidence. Your eyes are opened and you see things as they are, and they are beautiful, majestic, and hope is restored.

"The Sheriff" was written as a prelude to the country-themed "Hoedown", which closes the side. During the opening drum solo, Palmer accidentally hit the rim of his tom-tom with a drumstick, and he can be heard responding with "Shit!". The song ends with a honky tonk-type piano solo with Palmer playing woodblocks. "Hoedown" is an arrangement of "Hoe-Down" from the ballet Rodeo (1942) by American composer Aaron Copland, who gave the band permission to adapt the piece.It became a live favourite, and opened the band's shows between 1972 and 1974.

One of my very favorite bands. They have such a big sound for having only 3 members. They were masters. They were fantastic live, what a great era for music. It was a Renaissance.

16:49. Back when I was a kid in Mexico City there was a sports segment in the news radio "Radio Red" they used to play this intro for that segment. This radio station used a lot of ELP music as the day progressed. I was 11 then, I used to spend a lot of time listening to this album. Another album from ELP if you haven't listened to it yet, and you should, entirely, Pictures at an Exhibition. You won't regretted!!

A day without ELP is like a day without sunshine...... Just saw another mind-bending Keith Emerson tribute concert, this one at Synthplex. Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater) played on Tarkus, and Ryo Okumoto (Spock's Beard) and Rachel Flowers also joined in with Marc Bonilla's Keith Emerson Band - all stellar players. What could be better other than a time warp back to the 70's for live ELP?
@grega85862 жыл бұрын
You should check out Rachel Flowers performing Trilogy... "Rachel Flowers on the Modular Moog - intro by Keith Emerson" will get you there (since links seems to keep a comment from being posted these days). If you want to try a "try not to cry" challenge, watch Rachel perform this at the Keith Emerson tribute concert.

Hey guys thanks for everything you do. Please keep in mind there are only three of them and they could play all of these songs live. There is a live album “Welcome Back My Friends” Please play something from it to demonstrate what Amazing musicians they were and are. RIP Keith and Greg.

They gained tracks on this album and took advantage of all of them. Because there were so many overdubs, they had a very hard time playing The Endless Enigma, Trilogy, and Abaddon's Bolero live. They did play Hoedown, The Sherrif, and From the Beginning live, although From the Beginning was stripped down live, as was Lucky Man. (Usually just Lake alone on the stage.) When they followed with Brain Salad Surgery, they bought a theater and rehearsed there to be sure they could play all the new music live. Here's a bit of trivia: They rented out that theater as a rehearsal space for Led Zeppelin, among others.

And I can't be sure, but I don't think they ever played Living Sin live.
@bmac12052 жыл бұрын
@@kathyratino962 ELP didn't do 'From the Beginning' live in concert until they did it as 'Emerson, Lake & Powell'. They did a full blown version of it for that ELPowell tour in 1986. Blew me away. Even Powell played Congas. After that, ELPalmer would do it in various levels of accompaniment, even with Carl Palmer using soft mallets on the drums to emulate the congas.
@bmac12052 жыл бұрын
@@kathyratino962 I think you're correct on that. If it is recorded anywhere it is on the official bootleg 4 disc sets (four of them...that's 16 discs) that go for crazy money.

I first heard ELP one night in 1976 when CBC (in Canada) did an ELP tv special. I was blown away, and immediately went out and bought their first album (on 8 Track) and, shortly after, Trilogy (I had to save up my pocket money). "Hoedown" is worth checking out especially as it was a concert staple. I also quite like "The Sheriff". "Living Sin" I came to like more when I was older but it is still my least favourite on the album. Keep up the awesome work!!

All the sounds you hear other than percussion, vocals and bass, are coming from Emerson's keyboards. The man is amazing. All three are first class musicians but Keith Emerson is a monster on those keys. Acoustic piano, synth, and organ. Watch him in concert. He abuses organs by tilting them on their sides and sticking knives between the keys to sustain notes. 🎹
@peterf45522 жыл бұрын
Have you two checked out any of Rachel Flowers' covers of ELP? She is literally a female Keith Emerson, and all the more amazing because she learned all the songs by ear, as she's blind. Check out "The Endless Enigma - An International Collaboration" if you get a chance. Close your eyes and you almost can't tell you're not listening to ELP.
@kathyratino9622 жыл бұрын
Not literally, of course. But she covers him brilliantly, and she also sings, composes, plays multiple instruments, and has produced several albums of her original pieces. One of her songs was written for Greg, whom she was also close to.

I never saw a 'free' bin, but lots of 'Bargain' bins and bins for what they called 'Cut-Outs' Got a lot of great Prog that way. They had no idea how to catalog it and sell it back then, especially artists like Mike Oldfield.

@@bmac1205 I was lucky enough to live in a university town back then. There were 6 record stores in walking distance from the bus stop, and an arcade or two near each of those! Free bin was for Los with a skip, or damaged covers. Used record stores were swimming in cashed in vinyl back then. I also got a few hilarious Brady Bunch sings records from those bins!

Skip Living Sin and you'll hear the most perfect prog LP of all time, or at least my favourite ELP album. I never thought they could outdo their debut album. Abaddon's Bolero is a hidden instrumental gem. Hoedown is fun, The Sheriff is too, both with a wild west (!) vibe. I heard this the day it was released, being a big fan since Lucky Man came out. The Moog is what drew me in initially, and the fact that I studied classical violin from age 9. Finally there was some rock music that was actually musical in the classical sense, not just throwaway pop made for dancing. So good to see you back again. ❤

Nice reaction guys, IMHO the Endless Enigma suite is the highlight of the album followed by Trilogy. As you mentioned Keith really demonstrates his virtuosity here and what a phenomenal composition. Also one of the best vocal performances by Greg and Carl is right on point as usual. Certainly review the remaining tracks, the album is one of their best. Bought the album in '77 and immediately loved this piece and the album in general. After that I highly recommend the album Brain Salad Surgery, my personal favourite, from the opening track "Jerusalem" you be in for one helluva treat! Best wishes
