This song was written by the very talented ladies, Sarah Newcomb and Suzie Deane who wrote together under the pseudonym, Elliot Finch. Crawford indicates that others helped out (usually by adding ideas or the occasional extra verse). For the record, the refrain as written was "Yo ho ho and a ruddy bum bum". Not "a bottle of rum". One verse which was left out of this video: Fifteen years and we haven't seen a shore leave, Yo ho ho and a ruddy bum bum. Heave! Heave! Yo ho ho and a ruddy bum bum. The first "Heave" is as pulling on a rope; the second is the result of sea-sickness.
