Thanks everyone for your kind and supportive comments on my chair. It was a great mental exercise to do something for me on my own and now I'll make a better carpenter teammate to Barron with a modest idea of how to use various tools. Practice makes progress! The directions call for hinges but very small ones so I bought big ones and they were TOO big.. so I have had to improvise with a slightly incomplete chair until I go to town next. I'll be sure to pick up a pocket hole jig too. I didn't know I'd need one till I got home with my lumber and screws and began the project! Is there something you've been itching to do/learn that you've been putting off? Try it this week and come back to let me know how it went!

Elsa, you need a Kreg Pocket hole jig set! It makes drilling those pocket holes so much easier and you will use that method to build everything from furniture to kitchen cabinets 👍🏻

Great job! I love that chair!! Just FYI, you can buy a pocket screw kit that takes the guessing out and gives you a perfect joint every time. My husband built most of my furniture and that tool was key to beautiful corners. You can also get little ends to glue in each joint that is visible. But that chair came out very well! More varnish never hurts.

The three of you bring joy and happiness into my life and I am grateful. Congratulations on your new home. I remember how I felt with my first home. It was a homestead on 225 acres in the Oregon mountains….what was left of a several thousand acre goat ranch from early 1900’s, developed by Greek immigrants. It was heaven. I only gave it up to find my people as I did not feel that I fit in the community. I hope to find the land and the people in the same place so so may move back into a rural environment. I have found it very helpful to stain and place at least one coat of varnish on all the lumber,BEFORE I even cut a board. Makes it so much easier, then just do touch ups.

Great job Elsa! The chair looks great, but what make me really happy is your ambition to do the project and be an overcomer. I get a special joy when I see a woman driving a truck or motorcycle, or you building a chair. I raised my daughter without limits and encouraged her to do anything she wanted to do, and some she did not want to do. I was a proud father this last weekend, when I drove to Maryland to do some maintenance on her car, fully expecting to do the work. But my daughter (now 23) grabbed the tools and said she wanted to do the work. And she did with minimal input from me. Keep it up ladies! (I did not raise my daughter to be a boy. After riding the mini bike, she would go in the house and paint her nails.)

Your next carpentry challenge: Build a hinged/adjustable support for the backrest so you can put it at different angles, or flat without the prop-lumber! Think a hinged/hanging frame from the top of the backrest with notches cut into it that line up with the lower frame!

Thanks for these tips!! I have hinges! I just didn’t install them because they’re too big.. the project called for cutting slots in the wood in the back to prop up the backrest on (I left the plans in the description) but it just didn’t seem very sturdy. So now I will continue pondering and eventually make it great. For now the 2x4 in the back makes me smile … until I move the wrong way and the whole thing falls down 😂

I still remember the day (as a single working mum) when my daughter , who was 3 at the time, noticed that the lightbulb had blown in the downstairs loo... She said "Mummy, the lights have gone dark, we need to find a man to fix it for us"!!! My daughter is now 11 and since that day I have taught myself basic plumbing, electrics, DIY..... I have fixed everything from broken washing machines to laying my own decking. You can do anything when you set your mind to it (with a little help from youtube along the way) and hopefully my daughter has learned a few tricks too! Well done Elsa xxx

The colors in the blanket really go well with the color of stain that you used on the lounge chair. Hope you get many hours of relaxation in your lounge chair! Round about 40 years ago I found a place that offered training in exchange for labor in building a log home from the live tree up. It included how to down and cure your own logs. I have always regretted not following thru with that master plan when I was at the age to do it.💪

This is awesome! During quarantine last year I decided I wanted to make an end table out of pallet wood, so I took them apart, cut sanded and nailed an end table together! It's my favorite thing in the house because I made it! Every misstep or happy mistake is a memory I cherish and remember just by looking at it everyday. It reminds me that I had an idea and I executed it! I've since only built 2 other things, but they're small steps to a bigger picture! Cherish the steps you take along the way with your creations, they won't be perfect nor do you want them to be! You did a BEAUTIFUL job, Elsa! And Barron's support through it all was so wholesome! @@ElsaRhae Elsa look around your property I would bet you have enough wood to build you furniture. I may not be finished wood but that will make the furniture all the more unique. Use your land to build your furniture and then your house. You have all the tools you need. Those Ryobi power tools you have Can build your house, it just takes basic understanding as to what each tool can do. You are on your way. Great job.

Beautifully done!!! This video is exactly what I needed to see; I bought an RV 3 months ago with the grand idea of renovating it and using it to take my family on road trips and eventually live in full-time. It's not something I've done before, nor do I even know anyone who's done it, and I've never renovated anything in my life. I've been so intimidated and overwhelmed by the entire project that I've kind of blocked it out mentally, I try not to look at the RV in my driveway because every time I do a wave of guilt and shame washes over me. I am currently rebuilding an RV to live in it. I bought all of the power tools and yes, I loved it. I learned how to rebuild the Subfloor, framing the walls, cabinets and the reframing of the extremely water damaged roof. I did hire some help to assist with the stuff I wasn't strong enough to do, but to my surprise, this 32 year old man, needed my instruction to use power tools.

Yesssss! You did so well on this!! The "ahh lounging" at the end did me in lol I like to use shop rags for my staining, I wash them with my other DIY clothes/rags/drop cloths/etc and keep reusing the same few instead of those annoying sponge brushes.

I would HIGHLY recommend that both you and Barron watch this guys KZbin videos. He has an amazing dog (just like you) and he doesn't do a lot of talking. He builds his own home, and all kinds of other things, from scratch. He uses hand tools. His energy is amazing and what he creates is amazing too. After you watch a few of his videos you will be hooked. You will fall in love with Cali, his dog, too! He catches fish and other types of food and cooks it over the fire. Just watch them - I think you will really appreciate his style.

Awesome job Elsa! It was fun going through the journey with you. I find now that I’ve turned 30 and even in my late 20’s I’ve been more willing to try and fail at things. More willing to stop being frustrated and take the time to learn. It’s been great. I took on a lot of home projects with the help of KZbin succeeded in many things. I’ve done my own shiplap for a feature wall in my living room. Screened in my garage (doors on either side) to allow for it to act as a gazebo. I redid all my trim to a more modern style and took on paper making. Creating can lead to so many cool hobbies.

Well done Elsa! One thing that always helps me during a build is to sketch out my own visualization of the object I want to create. This helps map out the dimensions and organize a materials list. It also lets you "see into the future" of what the object could look like and how it will function, and from there you can iterate and improve upon the original plans to make the object better fit the purpose you want to achieve.

Way to go, Elsa! Job well done! My first project was a raised bed for a garden. Like you, had to redo a couple of things and fix them, but I was so pleased with the outcome. I ended up having 4 altogether and grow vegetables with flowers to make it pretty! You did a fabulous job. What a great way to start becoming familiar with tools and stain! 👍

Nice job on the lounge chair! I noticed your little fan running off a battery bank. Something I built a while back was to take a electric fan from a car radiator, make a frame out of scrap wood, then hookup a 100 watt solar panel. Never needs batteries and the more sun, the more air it moves.

Elsa- so on the folding head board get you some 1x2’s and nail them in between the large gaps. It will be a neat design and will look like you designed it that way. You. Hold even stain them a different color or darkness. Great job!
