I was so happy to hear the Speed/ESPN commentary on this crash.... David Hobbs and Sam Posey are LEGENDS in Racing AND they're a couple of the best commentators for racing.

It's quite awful to say considering the violent ramifications of driver injury, but Sam Posey's comment "it's the second time in history that a Mercedes has actually left the track" is so unreal I can't help but laugh in shock. Race cars are not built to lift, vacuum or clean air, so, when you see one, I mean, Jesus, damn, that's so unreal I just can't respond other than laugh at how the impossible was made possible. That was one catastrophic design flaw. I hope Dumbreck's family sued Mercedes for that flaw. Also, I'm glad Daytona Prototypes from America didn't race here as they could easily flipped just as well. The fact that Dumbreck landed on his wheels in a clearing surrounded by the trees is an act of something not to be explained. He's one lucky son of a b.
@roblilt73597 жыл бұрын
Dumbreck was uninjured. Also the Daytona Prototypes would not have flipped, completely different aerodynamics.
@lkyksb37 жыл бұрын
I read on Mulsanne's Corner that the flips had something to do with the relatively short wheelbase in combination with the longest overhangs of any LMGTP car which caused the car's aerodynamics to become very sensitive to changes in pitch. Since Mercedes tested on smooth mostly smooth circuits, they were probably caught off guard when they arrived at the bumpy public roads of Circuit de la Sarthe.

43:30-31. It turns out that Mercedes put more downforce in the CLR by stiffening the rear suspension too much creating the condition which caused it to go airborne. There are a few really good videos online that examine the reason why the car was prone to catching air and flipping. Thankfully, Weber and Dumbreck weren't hurt...

mercedes also didnt have louverers over the front wheels, allowed high pressure air to build up in the wheel wells, probably done to reduce drag but add that to all the other issues (wheelbase & overhang + incorrect suspension settings) culmunated in disaster, sad really as it was a beautiful car and wicked fast.

What a tragedy for Mercedes Benz to have such trouble with their beautiful racers. You have to question the sub contractors engineering decisions⚠️. Lack of wind tunnel time??⚠️?? I worked for MB 1970-1990 and production car safety designs and quality were legendary. Not done by outsiders. 🇺🇲🏁⚠️

Doesn't matter how many times i watch it. That Merc flip is still very frightening. To bad that happened because the race with them could had been totaly diferent... Edit: it is known that Boutsen's accident was worse than Dumbreck's one. Edit 2: that was Celine Dion performing live at the 1:10min mark?
