The 100% commission on trial lessons is the main reason I've stayed away from preply for the moment. I know of at least one platform that takes the opposite tack, where trial lessons have no commission, but students are limited to three trial lessons. It also takes 15% commission regardless of the number of lessons a teacher has given, but I can see the motivation a sliding scale could be for teachers.

@@alimughal4430 Personally, I have used Italki as a language learner for a long time and now a tutor and I find it's been good so far. One potential downside compared to preply is that there isn't any proposed curriculum for english tutors, but all of my students on Italki want to learn French anyways, so that doesn't change anything. I've done english tutoring on Cambly, which has a proposed curriculum and also pays weekly (Italki pays twice a month with delays of up to ten days) but Cambly offers tutors a fixed rate per minute, while Italki, like Preply, allows tutors to set their own rates. Hope that helps. Anyways, I would recommend you look up different reviews for any platform you're interested in.

It was a pleasure to watch your 2 videos on Preply with a positive and an honest approach towards the platform (specially after encountering negative videos on KZbin). I am aspiring to become an ELT at Preply after completing my CELTA Certification form Cambridge University. Your videos has worked as a booster for me, propelling me to create a profile on this platform. Could you possibly suggest me on pricing as a starter? I would be grateful to you, if you could consider my appeal. Great videos, keep going!

Thank you ever so much for your comment and it is such a pleasure for you to join the ELT Experiences community. Welcome. In terms of how much to charge, I would recommend anything more than $20 per hour, once you have completed your CELTA course. This demonstrates professionalism and you would attract a certain clientele. This is the rate that I started at but quickly decided to increase towards $30 per hour now. The best you can do is be patient and don't be too quick to reduce your rate to something that you would not be happy with.

Regarding the Confirmation problem, Preply should create a button which could work as a check-in to confirm that the teacher arrived for the class. Surely the teacher arriving on time warrants an instant lesson confirmation, it's just mental that we have to wait 72 hours before seeing the money.

Hi Martin, thanks for sharing this. I've just taken a look at your Preply profile, and have a couple of suggestions/questions (if you don't mind): 1. You might want to proofread the "Subjects" section; 2. Do you offer 30-minute lessons as well? I noticed some other teachers do; 3. You could perhaps be more specific under "English for work" - is it general or specific (air traffic staff, lawyers, etc.) or both? Generally, your profile looks great and I think it's just a matter of time before you rise to the very top. All the best ;)

Nice video again Martin and the new ident's looking very professional. Agree with the points you've raised. You mentioned that you were busy with your other job. Is that bricks and mortar teaching, with Preply being your side gig for filling in the gaps? My suggestions for Preply would be hard to change because it is one of their corporate culture. They are an edutech company and the 'tech' part is very important. Rather than leaving something alone that works well already, they experiment and constantly introduce new 'features' much to the consternation of the tutors. If they were more hands-off, less controlling and more transparent they could be a fantastic company.

How do you think Preply could improve their platform for both teachers and students? Let me know in the comments.
@mindcache5650 Жыл бұрын
I looked at them. Decided they were the Uber/ AirbnB/ Deliveroo of the industry. A platform you do the work, they’re making 33% +++. For 42 hours per week ? But as you say better than nothing . There are other platforms that are better and take no commission but supply all the materials and flexible.

Hello Martin. Thank you for your useful videos. I'm a teacher of French and I've been teaching English as a foreign language for almost 20 years. Since I plan to teach both languages on Preply, do I have to make a separate profile for each language? Thank you in advance.

I think trail classes should ALWAYS be paid to the tutor if the student buys classes as a result of a successful trial class. It’s really greedy from Preply to take all the profit
@ELTExperiences3 жыл бұрын
I take your point but for Preply, they are the ones introducing potential students to you, so I can see why there is a commission structure. As mentioned in my video, I think any successful trial with the student booking additional hours should be paid to maintain motivation.

Hi Martin, thank you for making this video. I am referring to your second point: is the confirmation of lessons still not automated or did Preply make changes about this by now?
@ELTExperiences Жыл бұрын
In terms of the confirmation of lessons, I believe that if the lesson is conducted through the Preply platform then it should be automatically confirmed. However, if the student raises an issue then this will not be resolved. It is a little frustrating having to wait three days for the lesson to be confirmed though.

Thanks Martin for your honesty and willingness to share. I’ve been in Preply for a year now and have some great, steady students but would like a few more now at my higher rate. However, my profile position never rises above 700 or so and it doesn’t matter what I do to my Profile I can’t get to 100%. Otherwise my stats are pretty good, including my reviews. Any ideas?

I guess the profile status is rather arbitrary and I don’t really rely on it. If you have good lessons, a suitable introduction video, good profile photo and respectable reviews then I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

So 243 hours for last 6 months is about 10 teaching hours a week, right? Or are there weeks when it rises above that? How long are the classes on Preply?
@ELTExperiences3 жыл бұрын
Hi Charlie. Thanks for your comment. I have been teaching just over 6 months now and initially I had a few classes here or there. Now, I am teaching around 15-20 classes a week. It is starting to increase and snowball but patience is needed. It certainly helps make ends meet. Classes are scheduled for 60 minutes, but I only teach 50-55 minutes each time. This gives me a chance to have a cup of tea or coffee before starting the next lesson. A few classes can be booked for 30 minutes but this is few and far between.

You are a great teacher and I have the upmost respect for you, that is why I offer this constructive feedback: You are using your teacher voice to English speakers, this comes across as very slow, and drawn out, for a KZbin video it maybe more beneficial to be more direct to the point.
