Hearing this song live just adds that much more emotion to it. God, what a terrible crime this was and what a powerful statement this song is even today.

@@kevinjoseph517 You have posted this exact comment on every video about Matthew. Whatever the true or alternate story was with regards to how his horrific and violent death came about, Matthew now represents the face of so many gay men that ended up dead because of their sexual orientation. His death became a turning point...and that fact cannot be changed. The legislation against hate crimes that bears his name is a reality. "The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009, 18 U.S.C. § 249 The Shepard Byrd Act is the first statute allowing federal criminal prosecution of hate crimes motivated by the victim’s actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. The Act makes it a federal crime to willfully cause bodily injury, or attempt to do so using a dangerous weapon, because of the victim’s actual or perceived race, color, religion, or national origin. The Act also covers crimes committed because of the actual or perceived religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or disability of any person, if the crime affected interstate or foreign commerce or occurred within federal special maritime or territorial jurisdiction."

Saw Elton sing this at his 2011 Matthew Shepard Foundation benefit concert in Denver. It’s a beautiful and powerful tribute.

I was at that concert, too. Will always remember Elton telling us that he has a photo of Matthew by his coffee pot, and each day begins with a "Good morning, Matthew."

I really felt bad for this guy until I read about who he truly was, and according to his killers it was purley robbery not due to his sexuality. Let's just say he wasn't the innocent guy who everyone paints him to be.
@ajay970053 ай бұрын
His death was not in vain. None of us except for Mother Theresa and Jesus Christ are truly innocent. He wasn't a Saint. Matthew's life and death made a difference for all of us. The country was changed the laws were changed for the better and it began with Matthew simply having lived.
