Absolute classic masterpiece from Elton. This is definitely his best single. I could never understand why it flopped in the UK in 1989 it got to number 45, Sacrifice only got to number 55 in the charts but reissued in 1990 as a double A side got it to the position it deserved number 1

This was on the radio in 1989 when my husband and I were leaving the hospital after our 3 day old son died. I felt it was a sign -- the lyrics were/are meaningful. Still listen to it 31 years later.

It sure is one of his best! Along with empty garden! They’re spiritual songs! This one shows that he missed the opportunity to believe in GOD, and instead sold out to the Enemy, but it wasn’t what he bargained for. The Bible talks about people drowning in perdition. (The scene of the hands coming out of the water). Also the hand coming out of the ground. It says we are a field ( flowering grass, grain- wheat and tares). Both those songs he is trying to move on without GOD in his life, and live the best he can. I think most if not all songs have “ hidden” spiritual meanings.
