When your band is dominated by piano, one thing that is absolutely necessary is perfect harmony or rhythmic link between the piano and the drums. This is your bass section. I studied music composition at the grad school level and can tell you with no qualms that Nigel Olsson was a huge part of that amazing sound. Try keeping time on drums with a young Elton John on piano. Elton knew it quite well and has often told the story of Rod Stewart telling him how important it would be for him to get the best drummer out there to set off his piano, and he recommended Olsson. What a great show though. If you haven't, which I am sure you all have, seen the Central Park concert of Simon & Garfunkel, then get busy

Arrived at 9:30 am. Great concert. Only Elvis Presley in 1973 at the Las Vegas Hilton could compare. And Paul McCartney live in 1992 doing Beatle songs...and Fleetwood Mac rumours tour. And Harry Chapin in Brooklyn. And U-2. Cheep Trick. Kiss at the Garden. Ted Nugent. Seen them all but this was my birthday present. 19. I'm 62 now. What an age I lived in. Still Elvis had the best show. I was 12. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. This concert was free. The others were less than $10. Except for Paul...$33. Now concert tickets are $5000. Crazy. Rock on.

57:09 HARMONY !! Funny that this song gets such a HUGE reception from the crowd. It was not a "hit single". In fact- I think it was on the reverse side of either "Goodbye Yellow.." or "Benny and .." if I recall from my 45 collection as a kid. Harmony is up there with his TOP TEN or TWENTY greatest songs . It should have been pushed as a single.

I wondered if I'd ever see this show again. I was there to witness the show about 25 yards from the stage. Had the T-shirt from the show, it was a benefit for the parks of NYC. What a thrill to see this again, a Captain Fantastic Event I'll never forget.

My first 45 was Philadelphia Freedom, still have it! On the B side is When I saw Her Standing There, live with EJ and John Lennon. This Central Park concert is very special as you see the towers at 18:50 (during Goodbye Yellow Brick Road), and later, from memory, he points in the direction of the Dakota and says hello to John Lennon .

80's were a great time for us NYC'ers. During My High School years, Central Park put on 4 of the most Iconic free concerts in history. Elton John (frosh year '80) , Simon and Garfunkel (Soph '81) , No Nukes ( Jr yr '82) Diana Ross (SR year '83) We/ I were being spoiled and never knew it. Great Music, NO AGENDAS!! Days gone forerver! 😥 Havent seen this since what feels like a lifetime ago. Between these shows and the Budweiser Concerts at Pier 84 , we were in outdoor concert heaven. Thanks for posting!
