From what I have been able to gather, this was a genuine marriage, not a sham as many people believe. They truly loved each other and you can you see the sincerity in the kiss. You can't fake love. The broke up amicably and she never talks about it, but the break up was heart breaking for both of them. He admits that he hurt her deeply, but not intentionally; it's sad in a way, she never remarried.

Love is separate from sex. Elton was looking for love his entire life and I'm sure he did love her and wanted children. Who can blame him for wanting what others take for granted. It's a little like Freddie & Mary, someone who loves you for who you are. I'm sure she knew he was gay.

i admire elton very much...he is a great composer and singer.....i just hope she wasnt deeply in love cause must have been kinda hard for her even if understanding....but he deserves to be happy....glad he finally found happiness in his life.....

WOW! was I really that young as a child to be that fooled by disingenuous partnerships - knew so little of Elton John to really know what his true sexual preferences were that far back. He would have made an incredible husband and father to any natural offspring Renate would have ever conceived.

Michael David It was his last-ditch attempt to try and change how he felt. Sadly, I think Renate was oblivious; she thought it would be forever. Elton knew he wasn’t being honest with her or himself; he still regrets hurting her to this day.

@@pianoman1396 I feel bad for her...I read she was really in love with him as I'm sure most of us would be. They reconciled briefly a few years ago, but up until she then she would have nothing to with Elton and couldn't bear to listen to his music. He also said in one interview that he thought being married would stop his addictions. People close to him said he really wanted to become a father around this time and raise a family.

He never meant it as a cover up. He really liked Renata and thought that maybe a relationship with a woman was the way to go since all his previous relationships, with men, failed. He wanted love and a sense of stability, but not children!

Even in this day and age sometimes its not cool to be gay My 38 yr old cousin doesn't even have the courage to his own dad (my uncle) that's he's gay because he thinks he will disown him. He has a boyfriend but is still married with 2 children.

No... Elton loved Renate with all his heart... the only two things that held him back were that he didn't love her sexually and he was on drugs. He was out of his mind when he married her- he thought that by marrying someone- anyone- that they could change his addictions and who he was. But he was wrong... too much on drugs to understand. Elton LOVED Renate, there is ZERO questions about it. I've read enough, heard enough, and seen enough to know the truth. And yes, he still had sex with her despite being gay. The last time he slept with a woman was in 1988, which was Renate. He was vague, but he said he wanted children so badly with her but it "didn't work out". I'm assuming either Renate was having issues getting pregnant or Elton was afraid to admit he didn't want/love her sexually. Either way, just because he's gay does NOT mean he cannot be in love with a woman. He only left her anyway in the end because he was cheating on himself, being on so much drugs and not being the best partner for Renate at the time. It had little to nothing to do with him being gay, at least, not at the time.

Elton knew he was gay before he tied the knot. Sadly a lot of gay people marry women to try and 'rid themselves' of homosexuality. Elton and Renate are still friends.

As Elton, himself, said he wasn't mentally in the right place for marriage, either way because he was a heavy drug addict/ alcoholic. Then again they did last for four years, which is longer than some of these marriages.
