"The coasters are made of wood, which makes them wooden rollercoasters." Things I never thought needed to be said! A rose by any other name...
@76horsepower4 жыл бұрын
It’s a little more complicated, unfortunately. Gemini at Cedar Point uses a wooden structure but a standard steel tube frame. Many call this a steel coaster but some call it wood. The Villain at the former Geauga Lake had a structure made of steel but a traditional wooden track. Most everyone called this a wooden coaster. I think what the author of this video should’ve specified is that it’s a wooden coaster if the track is made of wood (with steel plating added to it, of course).

For coasters demanding extremely fast loading times to prevent serious problems, large people can easily be mostly checked at the beginning of a line with a test seat, as kids and the occasional adults teetering on the edge of being too small should probably be. But even then people with cell phones, too much in their pockets, clumsy hands with the seatbelts, and/or just a careless or in rare cases reckless attitude towards putting on the restraints are probably a plenty big set of issues that's harder to control.

Ryan, I just now found your channel, and I need to take my hat off to you, young man! I operated a very small woody in the now defunct park "Miracle Strip" in Panama City Beach, FL,y home state, back in the 80's when our coasters had NONE of the current safety features or sensors like our current generation of coasters. This is the 3ed tech analysis video of yours I've watched. The first two were for Kingda Ka and Top Thrill Dragster. Your breakdown and information, along with your work experience truly give a great perspective on how the rides have evolved over the years. Our small coaster has rattly lapbars and buttons for "Go, Stop and Brakes." Although, despite its size still great ejector airtime, especially over the smaller hill right after the lift hill. So, as a former operator, your videos are wonderful and you're to be commended. You are a good teacher for those who may know nothing about coasters. I look forward to all your videos and I'm your newest sub as of today including the notification bell. Your new Florida Fan, Aszneth 😁 PS: I have some bragging rights. BG Tampa is my favorite of my three home parks and I've not been able to ride an RMC refit, but guess what I get once the park reopens? You guessed it: #IronGwazi! Thanks, Ryan. This is a very informative piece.

Interestingly enough, my experience running cornball was that it was also extremly moody with pacing, even with steel wheels. Frequently we werent allowed to send test cycles in the morning until maintenance was there to ride it. Generally this was fixed with greasing the track but one day we had to close for an hour to grease it, because it kept getting stuck on the final brake, not passing the sensor it needed to activate to release these brakes (yeah it was strange for a one train coaster). Lost coaster also had issues but not because of the wheels.

Your 'Problematic Coaster ' series is great and your commentary as a ride operator provides some very interesting insights from an engineering perspective keep it up... (BTW sorry for the up coming engineering rant.) Speaking of an engineering perspective based solely on the pictures and comments in your video I suspect they may be running in a fatigue problem with the glue used to laminate the plywood track. Yes the plywood is and will always be stronger than traditional wood track construction but the one of the strengths of steel is it has a ridiculously high fatigue life or the number of times it can cycle before fatigue failure is an issue. Woods chief strength other than cost is the flexibility to dissipate the stress as vibration without being damaged.... example, a sudden 'impact' of stress like a train of cars hurtling along the tracks if that doesn't exceed 30% of the wood ultimate strength then it's estimated that the fatigue life is roughly equal to or possibly greater than steel. Ever notice the amount of movement a wooden coaster's frame has versus a steel coaster. If the load/stress is sustained or high the overall stress level will shorten the life of the wood. That is odd behavior compared to most materials. But the glue or adhesive is essentially a plastic material and most plastics don't have a very good fatigue life in comparison. Also since the plywood composite track has a stiffness that mimics steel it would likely exaggerate the fatigue stress the glue would experience. Its along the same lines as why except for certain critical areas traditional wooden coasters use nails & spikes instead of screws and bolts the flexibility allows them to dissipate the stress as movement with minimal damage. The short version is the old song lyric 'strong enough to bend'.... anyway just some thoughts.

Intamin wooden Prefab vs Gravity Group's wooden The Voyage (w metal ledgers) vs RMCs wooden Topper Tack vs RMC's metal I-Box but I joke at myself: This is a long video to love. Maybe I'll send this video to my 84 year old dad. He loves wood work! (In the 70's he actually built the cabin my kid brother lives in to this day where there's no running water or electricity. It's ok: there's an outhouse there built in '74 and my bro drives down to town to get supplies and take a shower.) My dad also used to love roller coasters. (Spoiler: Not any more: damn fool insisted on riding the back car of Coaster at Playland in Vancouver; Canada's oldest coaster from '58 w a single position lap bar at the age of almost 82yo in August 2017.) I'll try to get back to you on the many details of this video, El Toro Ryan, when/if I get a chance. Much Love: my biggest coaster related hope is that I can get to Great Adventure this August. I will watch this many times over I'm sure. This video SLAPS!

I love these indepth reviews. A) as a Mechanical Enigneering student they are very interestimg studies. B) as a roller coaster enthusiast, I get to check my list for good coasters. All around I cannot get enough of these.

El Toro was given to Six Flags by Intamin. A gift of good faith after years of maintenance failures.

Awesome! The insights on the track are great. Crazy to see how many layers are in the prefabs, and even then they still have to be replaced regularly!

Colossos was disappointingly low on air time when I rode it on reopening last year compared to Baldur (which felt like a mini el toro) and ya boi el toro.

I love your videos. I witnessed the TTD accident from the queue line on 8/15/2021. One of the two bolt heads from the flag plate ricocheted off the railing only a few feet away from me. Immediately after, the victim was struck by the flag plate. It was quite traumatic as I'm sure you can imagine. Thanks for all the knowledge I've gained from your videos.

You should do a problematic rollercoaster video on X2 that one had a rocky start. Btw Im going to possibly cancel my trip to florida and hit up the north east six flags parks in the ny and ne regions.

What a fantastic video. El Toro is one of my favorite coasters at Great Adventure (only behind Nitro) but the last time I rode it I got jackhammered so hard going through the turnaround after the first airtime hills it gave me a migraine. Maybe it was running really fast that day but it was a very painful experience. Keep up the good work! I'm slowly working my way through these videos while working from home.

Your amount of research is impressive. I've never thought about how expensive roller coasters are to build and maintain. I mean, i knew there was cost, I've just never thought about it in depth.

Since RMC has become the force it has become, the Intamin prefab woodie simply does not have a place in the market. An RMC Hybrid has all the advantages of a prefab woodie, they don't need as much maintenance as a prefab, can withstand similar forces, and seem to cost less.
