Is "its" the correct word to use or "it's"?
@carolynmcallister1496
@carolynmcallister1496 5 жыл бұрын
Depends how you use it in a sentence. "It's" is a contraction for It is. "Its" is the possessive form of "it." EX: The computer and all its hardware are in the office.

First, i would like to say thank you so much for doing these videos! I have been learning so much from you in such a short time. More than what i have over the past year studying with ATI. you make things very simple and easy to understanding with your tone and teaching techniques. You are making such a difference with future nurses such a myself who have seemed to find themselves at odds end when it comes to passing this test, especially here in California. It takes more than just needing passing score. It is extremely competitive here so depending on what your school requires, you may find yourself needing to ACE this exam. Nonetheless, big thanks to you for taking the time to help people who you don't even know and will most likely never meet. You're an ANGEL! helping future angels. Thank you Carolyn :) I would like to ask for a video on diagramming sentences. I am having a hard time even locating where the antecedent is, among other word parts like, phrases, predicates and complete predicates. Thank you in advance and i also love Sunday study tips! i find them very motivating.

What a sweet message! Thank you so much, and I am so happy that you find my videos helpful. I will create a video on diagramming sentences to help you. I've been a bit behind on my recording because the end of the semester is very hectic (as I'm sure you and probably everyone else knows)! However, I will be reducing the numbers of hours I work - effective this summer - so I can have more time to devote to helping you all. Thank you so much for watching!

I missed several questions due to my lack of understanding this rule: the pronoun closest is the one you use for the agreement. For example, “The girls or boy didn’t get his” ... I couldn’t figure that out on the test, and there was a couple of those questions. Thank you! I retake tomorrow.

Hi Professor! Can you explain what you mean by "agrees with the antecedent 'closest' to the pronoun? Closest as in side by side distance in the sentence or...?
@tiffanydavis3632
@tiffanydavis3632 3 жыл бұрын
The pronoun would be “their” or “his/her”. In the first example, the pronoun used is “their” because the pronoun antecedent is “nurses” - plural. So, the plural “nurse(s)” makes the sentence include the pronoun “their”. As in the second example, she used the word nurse. This is no longer plural. Thus being said, that would make the pronoun a singular pronoun, “his/her”. Hope that helped :)

Hi Professor McAllister, thanks so much for your videos! So far they have simple, helpful, and straight to the point. 5:03: Question about the compound subjects joined by "nor/or." You said to use a pronoun that agrees with the antecedent that is closest to the pronoun. Seems like the antecedent is AFTER nor or or, but doctor and doctors is also close to the pronoun. Are we always going to pick the antecedent when it is after the pronoun and not before?
@hennaahmed6211
@hennaahmed6211 3 жыл бұрын
same. i am still so confused about this.
@vannie279
@vannie279 Жыл бұрын
Nor/or just means that you are dealing with two antecedents (doctor/nurses) instead of one. The point is to find the antecedent in the sentence that is closest to the pronoun (their/his/her). When using nor/or, the pronoun is dependent on whether the closest antecedent (nurses) is singular or plural. In the first example, the noun that comes closest to the pronoun (their) is nurses. Nurses is plural so the their is plural. Hope this helps anyone else having trouble!!

Thanks Carolyn! I have a question about the pronoun antecedent agreement. On the TEAS 7 people-first language is taken into consideration and I was wondering if in the example of "Neither the doctors nor the nurse wanted to take his or her break" could be equivalent to "Neither the doctors not the nurse wanted to take their break" to use language inclusive of people who use they/them pronouns? Please let me know what you think! Thank you

Do you have another video on pronoun antecedents? I'm trying to understand it!
@carolynmcallister1496
@carolynmcallister1496 Жыл бұрын
No, I do not have another video...yet. But maybe this will help: look at this sentence: "My mother is a baker, and she is very talented." The 'she' is the pronoun antecedent (so you don't have to say 'Mother' again) to Mother. You wouldn't have said: "My mother is a baker, and it is very talented." Nor would you say: "My mother is a baker, and he is very talented." You've got to make sure the pronoun you use matches the noun it replaces. Hope this helps a bit. Good luck to you!
