Not many games can make me cry, but Undertale accomplished it with Asriel. Having to accept that Asriel wouldn't come back was the hardest thing I've ever had to do in a video game.

Asriel's story is one of the saddest. Darn, I can't even consider selecting the true reset button. I feel like...a monster. A really BAD monster. Just by considering it. I don't want to see his suffering again. It wasn't like he had very much of a choice for his fate. He wasn't the one who took the body he shared with Chara into the human world; that was Chara's doing. Then, Alphys injected his essence into the Golden Flower, and he returned. Without a SOUL. He had no ability to feel, literally. This meant he was doomed to a life as a cruel flower......forever. And when he comes up as Flowey in the aftermath of the Pacifist Route, he says he doesn't want to go through this all again. To have never returned from death would have let him be much happier than any life he could have as a flower. I don't even know how to end this comment. I just hate to imagine the torture, loss and emotionlessness he had to undergo.

​@@lionblazegd It's the most heartbreaking. Worse because you know Asriel as Flowey has murdered everyone and witnessed the world progress through practically infinite timelines. The guilt that Asriel would feel would be completely unfathomable to any normal person. Can you imagine? Getting the ability to feel back? And knowing in other realities you slaughtered your parents who loved you unconditionally? Murdered all the creatures inhabiting the underground? Hell. He probably murdered all the humans on the surface too, he had enough power with six souls alone. Then Frisk comes along. A cruel reflection of the person he loved more than himself, but who refuses to give up no matter what, who strives for a better tomorrow. I'd like to think Frisk was tempted over and over again by Chara to murder everyone, but refused over and over again until they figured out how to reach an ending that was good for everyone. As good as it got anyway. Frisk would understand the agony Asriel feels better than any other creature on the planet. The ability to save, load, reset. Frisk would know exactly the kind of heartache and horror that fills Asriel's thoughts and feelings. This is why I love the fight against Asriel. It's not really a fight but a duel of determination. Who can hold out the longest? Asriel just wants to experience the joy, the love he once had with Chara. Frisk wants to save everyone and everything, to achieve a happy ending. The final part of the fight where Asriel hits Frisk with the rainbow beam attack that widens made me bawl. It was him desperately trying to achieve his dream of experiencing everything with Chara and Frisk all over again... to get another chance at that. It was Frisk defying him that... Frisk refusing no matter what to give in and clinging on to the absolute very end with a tiny bit of strength in their SOUL that won out. Frisk knew that fighting like that for all eternity would do nothing, the only way to fix things.. was to move on. Asriel has to move on and accept reality. Chara is gone, but Frisk can make the world a better place.

Here I am listening to this theme. Here I am remembering that final sequence. Here I am breaking down again. Asriel never deserved his fate. Hearing this theme in the final sequence broke me so much and even thinking about it after finishing Undertale makes me sad enough to well up. There is a faster version to this, I just like this one better. It really describes the pain that Asriel is going through. He lost a loved one, and lost his soul. He began to go bonkers, not knowing what he was doing to the world. He didn't want to hurt anyone, but what did he get? People trying to kill him, monsters trying to kill him, humans trying to kill him. He did nothing wrong, and yet here he is, being tortured. He knows his reasoning for all of this is because he misses Chara. He knew Chara was not a good friend, but he also knew he had no friends in the underground. He wants his life to return to normal, to be loved by his parents again, to live with Chara again. But he can't do that. He'll always be a soulless flower. You're the only one who can make him happy. So go. Make him happy.

I still can't fathom how people could genuinely enjoy destroying everything in the no mercy route. I get that from a game perspective the result is enjoyable (and thanks to those who did those runs we know a lot more of the lore about the world Undertale is) but to me, murdering all these amazing people with stories, hopes and dreams? I can't bring myself to do it. I won't lie, I burst into tears while showing Flowey mercy. I wept the entire way through Asriel Dreemur and God of Hyperdeath. I sobbed during the closing of that battle. I clutched my chest when I went back to the beginning and saw Asriel at the flower bed where he talks to you more. To destroy everything in that world would go against everything I not only care about, but also believe in.

This game had such a profound effect on me. (SPOILS) After I beat Asriel and this song started playing, and was told that I can say good bye to all my friends underground, I walked my ass from that point all the way back to that first flower patch in the dungeon. No ferryman, no elevators, I walked. Walked through everything I've been through, talked to everyone I could find. And when I finally got backed to the flower patch, reflecting on all the hardship and building I went through on this journey with Frisk. I found Asriel, just looking solemnly at this patch of crushed yellow flowers And knowing that he was the one soul I couldn't save no matter how many resets I did, or what I did differently. That really hit hard Going through all the obstacles, puzzles, making such great friends, all the laughter I had. And I finally got the best possible ending on my first try But I felt like it wasn't enough, like it's not fair that Asriel doesn't get to have a happy ending. After the credits, and booting up the game again, Flowey appears And for once, he's not a completely raving mad lunatic, and yet he begs me to not reset, everyone is happy and Flowey, the thing that wanted to destroy the world, is speaking directly to the player and is asking me to just let them be. I like to think this is Asriel's final wish for everyone, and he mustered up the willpower to say it even through the madness of Flowey To this day I still can't bring myself to reset. Undertale is the first game that I stopped playing not because I got bored of it, or that I exhausted it, or I was obligated to finish it since I got it But because from a moral standpoint, it would be wrong to go against the wishes of the one boy that I couldn't save and ruin the happiness of all the other monsters I've never played a game where I cared so deeply for artificial characters They may be bits of code on a computer, but they're bits of code with a unique life breathed into them Thank You Toby Fox for blessing us with this masterpiece

I adore this one compared to the original, and it was a wise choice to slow this song down. The faster, lighter version sounds like it would play in a situation where Asriel was working with you to be saved, that you were both running into the light together, but...that's not the case in game, is it? I think the difference is that - it really sounds like a struggle in this piece. Every drum beat, piano key, bell, and string sounds like it's having to push the song forward - Asriel doesn't want to stop. He doesn't want to say goodbye and he doesn't want to let you in. ...You just have to keep pushing.

@@RealCrazyLittleVally imo that's how it's supposed to be. you spend the first run getting to know the world and characters, growing attached to them and at the end flowey tells you how to get your "happy ending" after thats done, some people might leave the game as is while others are curious and want to know more about the game, hence they start the genocide run and lose the emotional attachment they had to the characters just like sans said, LV is LOVE, and LOVE is Level Of Violence. The more your LOVE, the less you hurt. The less you hurt, the more you can bring yourself to hurt others. it's a representation of you disconnecting yourself from your connections in the game thats how i see it at least

SPOILER WARNING. I want Toby to add on a condition for playing True Pacifist the second time around. Frisk resets to go back because they're determined that they can change Asriel's fate. It doesn't have to end like this. And the second time around, Asriel knows that they're Frisk and not Chara. Whether or not Asriel as Flowey would is debatable. They address them as Frisk instead after the "SAVE the World" sequence. Asriel starts to remember that Chara was a bad person and wishes for a friend like Frisk instead. At the end, Frisk is given the option whether or not to give their soul to SAVE Asriel once and for all. As much as I love the original True Pacifist ending, I would love this even more.

Undertale, not only can you befriend people, you save them from the darkness in their world. It is proof that mercy is another form of true strength. A game in which you become an actual hero without violence. A story that allows you to reach towards others and do more than any badass warrior could. In this adventure, you not only help people, but you give them hopes and dreams. Through it all, you face hardships to make sure others can smile once again. You befriended Papyrus and gave him what he always wanted in doing so. Sans taught you of your actions and was proud of your kindness. You showed Undyne that humans can fight for something worthy. Alphys finally enjoys who she is and can stand on her own feet because of you. Joy overcomes Asgore when you show him mercy despite the anger that consumed him. And you move forward in hopes of seeinng Toriel again and tell her one thing: "I made good friends."
