Hi, guys! As a Celtic polytheist, I am THRILLED you did one of my favourite bands, and one of the few to study history, archeology and mythology so deep, that they actually touch on theological themes, not just a "grab your sword and fight" most folk metal and pagan metal bands do. So just a few advices if you allow me: Eluveitie almost always sing about Gaul. Either historical events, or reconstructed Gaulish mythology, even when they borrow concepts with better known accounts, such the Irish mythological cycles, they turn it into a Gaulish context. It is usually accepted that in Celtic mythology, darkness is NOT bad, but origin of things: day is born out of night, the year starts in a winter night, the months are measured by moons, etc. Caesar said the Gauls believed to be descended from Dis Pater, an underwordly, dark deity. This is obviously a Roman interpretation, and the Gaulish deities most accepted as possible Dis Pater are Sucellus or Cernunnos. It is also a common belief that the Underworld (what's "under the earth") is both, land of the dead and the origin of life. That's why many underwordly gods, also have strong vegetal or spring associations. And Vin is right. There is such concept as "the Cauldron of Rebirth". Also, keep in mind Eluveitie have songs in reconstructed Gaulish or taken from Gaulish inscriptions. Songs like Carry the Torch. Also any song from the two acoustic albums, "Evocation I" and "Evocation II", are in Gaulish. If you wanna do them you need a translation (there are plenty, especially for Evocation II, in which each song is devoted to a Gaulish god or goddess). Personally, I recommend songs as Inis Mona, Havoc, Epona, Lvgvs, The Call of the Mountains, King, From Darkness, Sucellos or Quoth the Raven. They're all very different but all deal with Gaulish history and mythology. Keep up the good job and thanks for doing this!

VinAnd Sori It's superlate in my country, and I can only think of the group I am like friends with for the similarities of our religions (I worship the Celtic Iberian gods and them, the Gaulish gods), but you know, each group interprets mythology differently (kind of like different Churches see the Bible teachings differently). Also, Gaul isn't my field of expertise. But tomorrow I'll think about my Gaulish sources (modern religious or strictly historical) and put them here. Some things to look for sure are the Irish and Welsh mythological cycles (they were collected by Christian monks but are the most complete legends and folktales preserved, and many themes are common to all of the Celtic world, also deities that stems from a same ancestor, such as Lugh/Lugus, Brighid/Brigantia, etc.). Also "De Bello Gallico" (The Gallic War) is Caesar's comments on that war, and he speaks briefly on topics of their religion, pantheon, the druids, etc. Tommorrow I'll try to find more sources. Most are a compendium of translations of Gaulish and Latin inscriptions, archeological interpretation of remains, study of modern folk customs and of course, compared culture and mythology (mostly to other Celtic cultures). I will do my best, this is a topic I'm really passionate about! 😜.

I don't know a lot about Sucellus myself as I have never really felt a calling to know that particular deity. Gaulish polytheism is mostly lost to time, but this guy is one of the experts working to reconstruct it. polytheist.com/segomaros/2015/08/10/sucellus/

IXINineIXI The "Gaulish group I'm friends with" is precisely the group Segomaros is admin. and I think creator too lol. I'm making a series of videos and articles about Celtiberian deities and for those shared with Gaul (such as Cernunnos, Epona or Sucellos), he gelped me a lot with compared mythology.

Eluveitie (pronounced El-Vay-Tee) is the Etruscan word for "Helvetii", a tribe of Celts that inhabited Switzerland in ancient times. Throughout their career before the recent schism, the band's frontman Chrigel and former female singer/Hurdy-Gurdyist Anna Murphy also wrote and sung a lot of songs in the extinct language Gaulish, and this makes Eluveitie quite unique in Folk Metal. I recommend listening to their songs "Inis Mona" and/or "Slania" for a taste of their Gaulish side in their metal music. Also, check out their albums Evocation: The Arcane Dominion and Evocation II: Pantheon, the latter being their current female singer, Fabienne's (who you heard on "Rebirth") first release with them. These albums are exclusively Celtic Folk music and the majority of the songs are in Gaulish. Also, on the subject of inviting them to play around the fire lol, the song "Calling The Rain" is a great one to break out one's Celtic dancing chops to. It makes me want to get up on a table and just dance lol

Hi. React to Agalloch - In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion, great american folk/doom metal band. Also Bathory - One Rode to Asa Bay (Bathory was a one man band that pioneered both black metal and folk metal, huge influence on any band of those genres). I don't know how the situation with the japanese records associaction is now but if it calms down one day check Wagakki Band - Senbonzakura, great japanese folk metal/rock.

Just requested In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion (or just anything by Agalloch) on the Metallica video... Hope it happens, one of the best bands of these last 20 years. Love Bathory too, but since it's more "raw" (naturally), Agalloch would be my pick for them to listen to first.

VinAnd Sori Yeah, it's usually interpreted as "the Helvetian", and it is an accounted inscription found in Mantua. It is inscribed in Etruscan and believed to be an Etruscan adaptation of Celtic "helvetios". Most accepted interpretation is that it was some sort of nickname of a citizen of Mantua with Helvetian ascendancy.

The official vid would have been 1000 times better...you kinda need to see them as well as hear them to get the full effect, imho. About 8 or 9 people in the band, including 3 women: In addition to the singer, the violin and hurdy gurdy player are both female as well. Even though you can't react to it now, you should check it out, cos it's awesome :). Not all of their songs are this "fast"'; as a matter of fact, their last CD was an all acoustic one. They do a pretty good mix of fast & slow on their "metal" albums. These guys are all about the Celtic experience centered around Switzerland & the Alps, and do quite a few songs in Gaulish, which is metal as f*** :). These guys are all great musicians, and you took the death metal aspects out of their music, they could hang with any "traditional" Celtic band out there. If you can't tell, this is one of my favorite bands. :)

Gojira Rules I strongly disagree it's generous. Even inside the folk metal scene Eluveitie are unique, technically talented, blend both genres better than most and put double the effort in studying history, archeology and mythology for their lyrics. I agree though, that Septicflesh are superb and better than most metal bands. Their lyricism is also amazing, I still shiver with the genius lyrics of mentioning the original titles in "Lovecraft's Death".

Thank you for reacting to this band. Eluveitie is my favourite metal band ever. I would love to see a reaction to one of their older songs: Tegernakô. I am planning to have this title (combined with celtic art and Mjölnir) tattooed on my arm. The title means "kingly" and it tells the story of a gaulish tribe who, when confronted by the roman troops, chose death over slavery. They fought to the bitter end and refused to give in. My father passed away from cancer a few years ago and to me this song symbolizes his struggle to me. He fought to the bitter end to stay with us.

I love how diverse the channel has been so far. Even if you guys only listen to 1 song from each sub genre for the next year, still probably wouldn't cover them all haha Nightwish "Wish I Had an Angel" would be cool video to see you guys break down. Firstly I want to thank you for doing this your reactions were very interesting. (in a good way.) Secondly as a polytheistic person I want to say you have earned my respect in the way you tryed to break down the song with the reference you had. You handled it better than most of my Christian friends did. I think thirdly would be that you didn't know about the band history so you missed the double entendre that they were also talking about this being the first song with this female lead vocalist and it being her first lead down the Metal rabbit hole. Lastly I want to say I'm interested,to say the least, to see the reaction to the real Tolkien inspired band Cruachan! (E- loo- vi- tee) sounds like Hobbits made a metal band Cruachan actually uses Tolkien Universe as inspection for some songs.

Cheers from the hometown of this band! I feel like you should watch the original video, because like that it‘s easy to miss out on the variety of instruments involved in this song. Also, with Folk Metal, the video can get you into the right atmosphere. But it‘s really cool to see you guys reacting to this! You should check oit more of their songs, even the very first ones. They go from very heavy to almost kind of poprock.

Eluveitie is an exceptional band! Love them and, yes, you two are ok with feeling like wanting to grab some beers and toast hehe! They do make great epic, powerful songs and very awesome, folk hymns too. If you want some serious beer drinking folk metal, I recommend amazing Finnish band Korpiklaani "Wooden Pints", Turisas "Battle Metal" or even Ensiferum. Cheers Vin and Sori!

I'm very late with this comment, but I hope you'll see it. I'm so glad you did a reaction to Eluveitie, this is one of my favorite bands. Maybe this not the best introduction to them, as this is their most recent song and the album is not out yet. They changed their line-up a lot in 2016 with 3 key members leaving and forming a new band called Cellar Darling. With this song they really get faster and heavier than they usually were in the past. I will repeat the shouts for "Quoth the Raven" and "King". Also, I recommend checking a music video by them maybe just for yourself) to see the instruments they play. Some of them are exotic and their sound is almost getting lost in the music, but they add a nice touch to the song.

El-Way-Tee. Means “I am the Helvetian” from the ancient Celtic dialect. Helvetia was the Roman name for their province in modern day Switzerland. Eluvietie explores themes of the ancient Celts and their subjugation by Rome as well as Celtic mythology

"El-Vay_Tee." This is what I love about Art. Be it a painting, a novel, or a song. Its meaning is what it means to the audience member. "Rebirth", means something in a single life, or in the context as Christian people, or in a system of eternal Earthly life. I love this song, and spending time watching the two of you talk about it enhances my experience of it. Thanks!

Their is a school of thought that links the grail cycle of myths to the cauldron idea, it also involves swords in lakes, and the sword in the stone being a bronze blade being cast, with a stone mold..anyway, the idea of the purifying cauldron/grail after a quest in which the seeker suffers and is purified, with a weapon from the gods/heavens from the memory of how swords were made, and the blade being returned to the heavens, with water as the portal (they still find old swords in rivers in the UK at least, and the habit of offering swords to water continued to at least the 14th century), and evidence of the idea being truly ancient with the bog offerings being found from Celtic times, everything from blades, works of art, household goods up to the bog bodies, which are either human sacrifice, or criminals executed as a sacrificial rite.

Sori: not sure about the Gaulish version of the cauldron they're mentioning below, but the Welsh version of it is associated with death, although not really death itself. The cauldron is owned by Arawn, god of death, he places the dead in it and they come back to life. Reincarnation, more or less.

I like this band. I enjoy that fact that the lyrics of good metal songs can bring intelligent discussions to the table. Really enjoying your channel. I would like to make two request. There is a “hardcore/punk” band called Stick to your Guns. They have a song called Amber. The lyrics I think would be great for discussion. So many of our youth are struggling and the song is about a 14 yr old girl. The other request is a metal band called Amorphis and the song is called the Bee. I recommend this song because I’m unsure if the song is literally about a bee or if it’s a metaphor that I’m missing and I think the two of you could help. Great channel. Thanks for sharing.

Eluvetie is a really good celtic band. The elvetes celts were the tribe from was is mow swiss (hence the name). If you want a song that expplain a bit of the celtic history and reliegion you should really check out Alesia, which was the name of the Oppidum where Vercingétorix last faced Julius Caesar.

These guys recently underwent a lineup change, with this song being from the newest lineup. 3 members left, and formed their own band. Some similar themes, but still an entirely unique band. You could listen to a song from their older lineup, My suggestion is Thousandfold. And you could also listen to a song from the band the ex-members formed, called Cellar Darling! My suggestion for them has to be either Challenge, or Six Days.

Check out Rose for Epona or Call of the Mountains by Eluvetie too, they have 2 kinda different styles I'd say, and these are, not less heavy, but have one of the women as lead singer, and much less focused on screaming...I'm not making much sense... But definitely check out the less screaming songs too, it was Call of the Mountains was the first song of theirs I heard and was instantly in love with the band

I started watching your channel to see how Christians felt about Ghost, but honestly your intelligent, thoughtful analyses of insights into the music and meanings of a lot of different bands drew me in. As a person who has been in and out of Christianity throughout my life and pretty opposed to it these days, that really impressed me! Every single video I have watched has been nothing but EXTREMELY interesting, but imagine how excited I was to see you guys reviewing one of my all-time favorite bands! I still want to see you guys have a deep discussion with Nergal, but I also really really hope to see you guys do more videos on Eluveitie.
