@@lisaweger2715 To some degree, yes, but Elvis Costello pushes it as far as he can legally go without being sued. I read his songwriting technique: he actually uses another song (or handful of songs) as a model, and basically cuts, pastes, changes tempos /keys/a few notes, and there's his "new" song. Who else does that? Most people fiddle around on the guitar or keyboard and struggle to find a riff and build on that. Oliver's Army? Dancing Queen. 30% of the songs on Get Happy? Booker T and the MGs greatest hits.

@@thom6746 Re: Oliver's Army: Steve Nieve came up with his own keyboard part which he admits was heavily influenced by the keyboard part in the chorus of Dancing queen. Elvis had already written the song, which without Steve's above mentioned keyboard part sounds nothing like Dancing Queen.
