With his trademark black-rimmed glasses and unrelentingly diverse musicality, Elvis Costello has been shaping our collective songbook for the past 40 years. Now he gives us the ultimate behind-the-music story, his memoir. "Unfaithful Music and Disappearing Ink" takes us from Costello's younger days in London and Liverpool as the child of a jazz musician through his prolific career to his current status as a veteran rock icon. Alison Cuddy, CHF's associate artistic director and former WBEZ 91.5 host, joins him in conversation.
This program is presented in partnership with the Chicago Reader.
This program was recorded on November 3, 2015 as part of the 26th annual Chicago Humanities Festival, Citizens: chf.to/2015Citizens

Elvis Costello lives to see his greatness appreciated across the globe. I love the fact that he can not be pigeon holed into a single genre. I appreciate his intelligence and humour.

Just finished the book today and found this. Really made the book come alive and even more so. Seeing his Dad performing spoke volumes about their relationship. One of the highlights of the memoir. Touching and extremely well written work. Just like his songs. Elvis Costello is a gift to us all.

What a great career he has carved out for himself. I can't name many, or any, artists that are so well spoken. He has always been naturally funny too. Brilliant man.

This is gold from beginning to the very beautiful end. The wonderful Alison did such a great job and deserved her special version of the song. Thanks very much for this.

+Popincourt Music I Could not agree more! Sadly, I have never listened to much of his music until today, the Title alone drawn me to watch it! As it popped up in the suggestive videos to watch, but I can honestly say he is the first person I have become a fan of before really knowing the music he made, which is quite interesting to me! Because I see music as life, it gives and it takes away, but there is beauty in all of it, and I think this man gets the Real Picture, he has a brilliant mind! I'm glad I got some " new to me" quality music to listen too!

So glad I found this on KZbin, a great accompaniment to his book......I have enjoyed his music since the beginning and seen him live on a lot of occasions, the man is so talented and his book has opened my eyes even more to appreciate his talent and music - the King is dead, long live the King.

I will never get used to the fact your huge nation champions our little islands music.THANK YOU SO MUCH. I grew up in the North West of England with a Granny in Norris Green Liverpool which Elvis mentions in the book and my Paternal Granny from Fermanagh Co Tyrone . You couldn't wish for a better Ambassador of our corner of the globe and its culture. Asked my Dad as a kid why was he always listening to Country and Western Music, to which he replied they carried on the music of Ireland in the States.🇮🇪🇬🇧🇺🇸☮ Peace and love an across the Atlantic Hug.

I had no idea what a dead-ringer Elvis is for his dad! Putting this book on my "to read" list right now. Have been fan since early on in his career. Great interview---as in he's a great subject. In my mind, his ability to tell an anecdote and knowing what/what not to share was key to making this such a riveting watch/listen. Perhaps interviewer was starstruck?

Stand-outs: Cool video of EC's dancing dad. Also, his half-hearted apology to Linda Ronstandt regarding her cover of "Party Girl". He said it brought him more attention -- and royalties? -- but at the time, he described it as "wallpaper". Older, gentler Elvis...

Alison did such.a great job offering questions that gave him room to tell great stories. Does anyone know the song at 1:22 with the lyrics "there's noone blinder than one who can't see It's a sad ache when love is gone it's a shame if you don't share your love with me"?
