The following quote by Chuck Norris "Like myself, it appears Elvis was introduced to the world of self defense while in the military. He would study many styles under many different ethnic instructors throughout his life. In 1959 he started as a student under German Juerge Seydel (a Shokotan sensei), then was mentored under Japanese Teugio Murakami (a Shokotan master), Korean Kang Rhee (Sa-Ryu TaeKwon Do Grandmaster), Americans Hank Slemansky (a Chito Ryu stylist) and Ed Parker (the founder of American Kenpo - who would remain his lifelong teacher) and Filipino Dan Inosanto (later Bruce Lee's student), under whom Elvis would eventually earn his black belt. No one can doubt Elvis' musical and theatrical genius, creativity and magnetism as a performer. And as far as his martial arts abilities, he truly was pretty impressive, flexible and tough.` Chuck Norris
@herberar Жыл бұрын
That's true, and in all of the different styles he really sucks.
@Abbiuk1 Жыл бұрын
@@herberar You are judging all this by watching a few clips filmed in the 70's when he was not in the best of health physically or mentally. He legitimately earned his first black belt. Al Tracy, one of Ed Parker's pupils, writes that Hank Slemansky really forced Elvis to earn his black belt because of a rash of phony celebrity black belts during the late 1950s. This apparently culminated when Ricky Nelson-who was, by all accounts, terrible at karate-was given one by instructor Bruce Tegner. Because of this, Slemansky put Elvis through a rigorous six-week training program to justify his belt. After Presley passed, Slemansky told Parker, "The kid ain't pretty, but he's tough and he's a Black Belt." (Which is an odd thing to say because Elvis was, in fact, very pretty.)

@@Abbiuk1listen.. If you have done martial arts for say a year or so.. You'd know your kata inside and out.. And even when old you can do it. I can do my stuff that i learned on and off in Taekwondo in the 70's through the 80s. I did several styles but nothing like i did taekwondo. I practiced for 3 katas or teageuk as its known in taekwondo. First to get my yellow strip on my white belt. Then to get rhe yellow belt, and then i did the one for the orange belt but moved town before i could take it. That was done from summer of 1989 to late 1990. So I got yellow belt in that time. I kater did a few other systems but not so serious like I did Taekwondo. But you never forget it. You can still do a teageuk bit you are way slower and it doesn't snap when you move.. When young you become fast and your body knows where to put the power which happens in the last turn of the wrist. The chi as it's always called in popular media.. All this stuff hurts to do when you're up there as i am.. And your body dont like to jumo around in the combat stances and all that stuff. But you can still do a lot of it.. And what Elvis was doing is just pure nonsense. His kicks arw not even kicks. They're all very beautiful and clean. Amd the ballance is crazy. One leg should be hitting at a 7-8 feet guy and the other frim in the ground with no movement at all. What Elvis is doing is drunk uncle martial arts and i would say that all the 12 year old black belts would break all his bones before he did 2 moves... It 100% nonsense. Don't consider it a real thing please. 😊

Cocaine wasn't his drug of choice. Not to let Elvis off the hook, but he held the (unfortunately pretty common at the time) view that if a doctor was prescribing it, it had to be all beneficial. Nominally, everything he was on was "legal" (but he never touched the devil's weed, marijuana /s). It was a time when housewives were prescribed speed "for energy and weight loss". George Nichopoulos (I can't bring myself to call him "doctor") gave prescriptions to the King like they were candy. And last I heard, he was peddling an "it's not my fault" story of how chronic constipation is what **actually** killed Elvis shortly before his own death, leaving aside it's one of the more well-known side effects of opioid use. TL;DR Elvis Presley took a LOT of drugs, and he was irresponsible in how he went about it, but cocaine wasn't one of them.

Alot of people on here are just coming on to ridicule and be insulting. At least Elvis was a better person than that. He was just talking about karate and doing a simple demo for fans. I have read that there was a plan to do a documentary about karate, but that did not happen. For me, he used karate onstage as a form of dance and self expression of something he enjoyed. He wanted to share this and make it a part of his show for entertainment and to share with fans. This was not about being able to beat someone within an inch of their life. People are still so jealous of him so they have to keep trying to tear him down.

Maybe Elvis knows how to fight, but watching this video, it gives me the impression that he doesn't. It really only looks like he's trying to score "style points" and trying to make himself and what he's doing, look cinematic and cool. Why would he need his initials and an orange/red trim on his Gi? Isn't the gi good enough as it was made and intended for Karate? Also, why is he looking away sometimes when finishing his strikes? The fight isn't over just cause you might have landed a strong blow. Maybe this is just the way he acted when cameras are on, and acted less cinematic when he's usually practicing... I've seen many people that have black belts, that demand respect and try to exercise their "Karate authority". Many get arrogant, because of their black belt, as if they hold all the answers. A black belt simply symbolizes that the wearer knows, understands and can execute the techniques and katas that are the basis for that branch of Karate. There are also certain strength and fitness requirements, but even so. Getting past that doesn't mean you're done. There are more techniques, combinations, applications and katas to learn that aren't written in the syllabus. What I'm saying is, stay humble. None of us are sitting on the correct answers to everything. We will all remain students forever.

His instructor said he really made Elvis work to get his black belt. Elvis had a 7th degree black belt and was inducted into the Kenpo Karate Hall of Fame and the Martial Arts Hall of Fame. He was said to have gotten an honorary 8th degree black belt tho. I personally did not think his Karate was that bad in this video tho. People are being over dramatic.
