Imagine how effective Elvis could be today if he had lived. All the music. And his voice/message. Always non political. This was his personal tribute to MLK, who was assassinated in Elvis' hometown. Elvis was devastated and he insisted he sing this song to end his TV show as a tribute to MLK and the Kennedies also gunned down. Maybe the greatest performance of all time for a message song of this nature. Singer speaking to the people. Trying to heal a nation. Going against the grain. In a decade when assassinations were taking all the people's heroes down. THAT was BRAVE af. And the network wanted NOTHING to do with it and insisted Elvis NOT perform it on their airwaves. Elvis won that argument and thank God he did. He was one of a kind and the biggest proponent of peace and harmony in the music world that probably ever existed.

It's obvious that this song is really speaking to you. I must say, I really like the "copyright" insertions - they feel less intrusive than the pauses you guys have to do to avoid KZbin problems so thanks for doing that. You were spot on about the tribute to Dr King origins - this is from his 1968 Comeback Special, as you noted, Elvis sang it with so much conviction and passion. He admired Dr King (some Elvis fans tend to claim that they were friends but there's no substantiated proof of this) and was devastated to hear of his murder. Such a shame that a song with a message first heard in 1968 remains too relevant today. Sadly, If I Can Dream was a once in a lifetime song and performance from Elvis. He never performed it live again - a real shame because although he didn't sing many socially conscious songs, the few that he did still speak to the mess that the world is in today. I'm also a big rap fan but I love all kinds of music. I hope you continue to enjoy checking out Elvis because during his 1954-1977 career, he sang just about every genre of music: from country to rock n roll, gospel, rhythm and blues, pop, soul and even funk. I really adore your heartfelt and deep reaction because I know you had your doubts about Elvis in the beginning. Take care.

I have heard/watched this song more times than I can remember, and I still cry every time. You're right, Rah, it is still just as relevant today as it was in 1968. I grew up watching and listening to Elvis and I learned right away that he was a man for ALL people, no matter our color. I was a very young child when dr. King got assassinated and I can get guarantee you there were a lot of tears in my house. In fact my allergies are acting up right now. Thanks for covering this and yeah when Elvis first got the news about the assassination, he was filming a movie and they had to shut down the production for a day because he went into a back room and curled up in a little ball and cried for hours.

This is his tribute to his good friend MLK. King's assassination touched Elvis deeply. They wanted him to do a Christmas song, but Elvis insisted on doing this one. When it was over, he went to his room and, in the fetal position, wept inconsolably. The other message song he sang was In The Ghetto.. He didn't write it, bit he grew up in a mixed impoverished section of town. Both songs are still very relevant some 50 years later. I pray for the day they become irrelevant.

Sincere reaction to an extremely sad but real song 👏 And how sad is it that this song is still relatable to this day? Elvis grew up in poverty, his father was in prison for 6 years so he and his mother lived in a shack - dirt poor - they depended on others for food. He grew up playing with all different races but mainly in the black community - he loved to go to the local church and sing gospel with the choir. Elvis himself was part Native American - he didn't see colour, he saw people. A true Gentleman who never forgot his roots. A rare, unique & truly special talent.

There was a whole lot going on in our country at this time in 1968. Civil Rights protests, anti Vietnam war protests, getting the daily "Body Count" each night during the news, and then two months before this special was recorded Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated not far from Elvis' home in Memphis, TN and then Robert F Kennedy was assassinated in a Hotel in California just two weeks before this special was recorded. It felt like we were tearing apart as a country! This song was directly inspired by Dr. Kings "I Have A Dream" speech that he delivered in Washington DC in 1963 and was written at Elvis' request specifically to close this special.

Elvis was not only an entertainer he was an entertainer for everyone no matter the skin color. He grew up as a lot of us southern white boys did and never understood the problems until the adults taught us different and that really includes all races. We still have a way to go but we're slowly getting there. One things for sure we can all agree on great soulful singers which i grew up listening too. Sam Cooke...Percy Sledge were 2 of my favs along with Elvis and I still listen to their music. I'll be happy when both races stop color coding their friends and just include everyone as their friends. Thats when we'll all be able to turn the corner. Turn the damn tv off and listen to Elvis he's a lot better than cnn or fox has ever had to offer us all.

Elvis was ahead of his time. The racist rumor started in 1958 by a reporter who interviewed Elvis in 1958 at a venue where Elvis never played. When Elvis was confronted about the rumor his reaction was anyone who knows me know I would never make a derogatory statement about the black community. Elvis lived and breathed black culture growing up. Yet the the rumor persists at a time when Elvis wasn’t around to defend himself. If anyone has any doubt please check a video called “Elvis and the black community” Elvis was color blind when it came to people. Listen to the people who knew him rather than unsubstantiated rumors.

He dedicated this song to Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy. I think the next Elvis song you should react to should be "In The Ghetto". It's another song that is still relevant today.

Some people who were mad because they couldn't control him started a rumor that he was racist. Nothing could be further from the truth. He was raised in poverty in the deep South in Mississippi, his mother worked as a domestic and his father as a tenant farmer. He attended black churches and hung out with black friends. There is a video out there something like "Elvis and the Black Community" where all of his friends from way back tell about their friendship with him.

Glad to hear from you again. You're one of my favorite Elvis reactors but there's a lot of time in between. You're always succinct in what you say so you're always compelling. You touched all the bases with this song. There's a lot of favorite songs: from his rock'n'roll days the Mean Woman Blues video is great, from his soulful album, From Elvis in Memphis, the song Only the Strong Survive is outstanding, and from Vegas 70, Polk Salad Annie is a lot of fun.

This was done in response to the killings of MLK and RFK just days and weeks before...He put it all on the stage that night..Its a great story of how it all came about to do this song..Written in less than an hour...I remember being 10 years old and watching this broadcast in Dec 1968..It was the highest rated show that year...GREAT REACTION....
