Milton Berle was such a champion for Elvis in the early days, and always supported him in the years after his death. Elvis had really great comedic timing, which was evident in many of his movies after particularly "Follow That Dream". Love how you have enhanced this clip considering it was broadcast over 65 years ago. Thanks

Exactly. When Berle says he "loves this kid," he really means it. He SAW his comedic and acting potential, and had no problem with how he moved. But this was a brief moment in time, wasn't it. You do see some of what could have been possible in a few of the movies, but it's kind of too late by then. No one has really mentored him, given him the chance to show what he could really do.

Yes, there was huge potential in his acting career, squandered sadly by the pull of money on all sides. Sadly there was no one really to mentor Elvis, a phenomenon like his had never really existed before, yes there were big stars but what he was doing in music and as a Celeb was meteoric and happened so fast, I doubt anyone had a chance to really plan far ahead. Still he left us a pretty impressive legacy, of which I know I am truly grateful.@@nspector

"Someone must have stomped on his head with those blue suede shoes!" 🤣🤣 I like watching this video. What Milton would have given just to have a quarter of the looks Elvis had! Funny show indeed. Nice to see it in colour. 🤗👍

Aw, I don't think Milton was jealous of Elvis. I think he had genuine affection for him. He was the only tv host during that year he shot to fame who truly seemed to like him and care about him. I think he means it here when he says "I love this kid." It's like the last moment of Elvis's natural innocence before he gets bombarded with the morals accusations and all the other horrors of that kind of fame.

I find this appearance on the Milton Berle show fascinating. It's like a spit second in time -- JUST as Elvis was hitting the big time, but also JUST before all the controversy and nonsense about his morals and all. It's kind of the last time we see Elvis unpolished, and in a beautiful way with Milton Berle genuinely showing affection for him. When he goes onto the Steve Allen show a month after this, Allen, who seems to act like Elvis is beneath him, has him sing to an actual hound dog, something Elvis hated. By the time he's on Ed Sullivan a couple of months later things are already quite different. There's conflict about showing him full body, but they do. That is, until the third and final performance on Sullivan in 1957 where they only shoot from the waist up. And by that time, Elvis is already somewhat jaded. So, yeah, I feel like this silly bit with Milton Berle is kind of the last time Elvis gets to just fool around.
