I was an unusual 12 year old in 1973. I loved and still love every song on that album. I think he was in great voice. Elvis’ 70s albums have aged well. They weren’t as well regarded then as they are today. I agree… a 9. The album was out of print for at least 10 years and hard to find back in the 80s.

As a little bitty kid I was especially entranced with the unbelievably cool album cover photo. I have a sealed copy, and I will always love it. As for the single, I always questioned the decision to plaster the word "fool" all over the sleeve. I had a college friend who never liked Elvis. First time she saw the sleeve framed in my dorm room, she looked at it and said, "Hmmm. Fool. That's appropriate." I knew it was coming from her but powerless to stop it.

The two releases pictured on the back of the jacket brought up memories. The Madison Square Garden LP was the first LP I bought with my own money, from the local T.G.& Y store. I remember that because the price tag is still on the front. The Aloha From Hawaii album I bought later, "Quadradisc", was purchased in the 70's at the local K & B Drug Store. Only heard that one in stereo, never had quad equipment. Still have the albums. Repurchased them on CD, then got another copy of them on CD in the "Album Collection" box set. Also have the Hawaii concert on DVD.

Hi Ed, Thank you for your video I found it very interesting but let me tell you briefly where I stand on this. In 1973 I was 11 years old and this Elvis cassette was the first cassette I ever bought. I wasn't an Elvis fan and up to then I knew nothing about him or his music. As a family with my parents and tw0 sisters one older one younger than me we probably watched Elvis movies on television but I don't really have any outstanding memories about anything that was outstanding. When I purchased the Elvis Fool cassette I did so going on my gut instinct, meaning that the voice in my head told me to purchase it, so I did. I listened to this cassette over and over again and what I really loved about it was that every song felt fully completed not over produced in any way, and Elvis' voice never cracked when reaching the higher notes. I liked It's Impossible simply because the few strings on the harp at the end lift the ending of the song and was unexpected, a really nice touch. Elvis on the piano proved that less is more meaning that you don't need to over produce songs to reach the final result. I actually felt at one point that Elvis was singing directly to me, the emotion in his voice really came through for me at least and I've been an Elvis fan ever since. I've always loved this cassette and have it on CD and the Legacy Edition with the outtakes. It's a real shame that RCA never promoted it as fully as possible at the time, there should have been a tv advert or some sort of coverage. I've read since then that these were left over tracks from previous sessions and RCA thought they might loose them or might be deleted so they put them on an album/cassette release. Finally I never liked the title Fool, it sounded rushed sort of last minute, maybe RCA could've called it Where Do I Go From Here? or That's What You Get For Lovin Me it seemed more appropriate.

This would never classify as one of Elvis's better overall LP's. My absolute favorite however is Where do I go from here. Good song. Really good vocals. I like FTD's release of this one because it is supposed to be the original Album Art that ended up not being used. Fool is also a solid ballad and Elvis shows off his vocals on that one.

I agree on all points, diehard fans don't care about the commercial weaknesses of this release. I read a story recently about how collectors considered the first pressing of this rare for decades because it immediately went out of print and never saw tan and black label reissues. Hard to believe now with them being all over the place on ebay and discogs. I had a seller one time include a copy with some writing on the cover, but perfect vinyl, as a free bonus item with something else I bought from him, probably because he couldn't get rid of it. I've got several copies of it now.

Surprised that you didn’t mention the fact that the album was deleted in the same year of its release in 1973. From what I’ve been told, the Colonel hated the song “Fool” because he thought that Elvis was degrading himself and so he made sure that the album would be deleted from Elvis’ “Great LP Catalog” before the end of 1973. However, the album continued to be pressed in other countries, Canada being one of them. So, if you desire a tan label copy of the album, that is one way to acquire it!

The only thing I don't like about the album are the piano arrangements of the three songs, as ELVIS' interpretations are so masterful. I think it's a shame that apparently after the '71 Country album, it seems that ELVIS didn't care much about how the albums were "put together", a shame. With the exception of TODAY, on which he recorded exactly the number of songs he wanted. SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH - from Brasil
@FrankieLovesElvis

The piano arrangements were arranged by Elvis himself so… I think they’re absolutely gorgeous and make this album a must just for those three tracks. The home recordings from 1959 and 1960 are even more beautiful.

It’s obvious that it was released from Aloha to promote the tv special and the album, regardless, it was a hit. Charted #17 in Billboard and #10 in Cashbox !!! A legit To10 hit. At the time, the “Separate Ways” Camden and had just been released so it’s normal for a RCA to promote product that had just come out.

@@TheKingsCourt1972 There are definitely some decent songs on here, I particularly like It’s Impossible, but you’re right, it doesn’t fit here. This album could have been an entirely folk and roots album with the addition of Early Morning Rain, Until It’s Time For You to Go, and another song or two from the ‘71 sessions. So little thought was given to marketing Elvis albums, it’s frustrating. Of course, I work in marketing, so maybe that’s why I feel that way. I think with a little more attention to marketing when putting out product, Elvis’ 70s output might be looked at totally differently. Anyway, love your videos, even if I don’t love The Fool album.

It went out of print very quickly and was even late to make it to CD. Time has not improved it much either. In fact, none of the Studio albums beginning with Elvis Now are that great. There was a very bad Conversation between Felton Jarvis (Elvis' personal Record Producer on forthcoming Recordings at this time) and Joan Deary, as the "Producer" of Elvis Back Catalogue (as we all know what happened with Elvis RCA Catalogue 1954-1972 and the most f*** deal EVER made in Music Business History days back in 1973). So, Felton was absolutely 100% sure the "Elvis" Album (aka "Elvis Fool") will hit the Top Chart incl 45rpm Single Release...well, Joan released the first "Elvis A Legendary Performer" Album and this excellent Vinyl Release blowing "Elvis" away from any Charts😉 Ed, please can i ask you something on interest, is this for real, that "Elvis" (aka "Fool") was THE ONLY Vinyl Release in the USA in 1973?! How do you figure that Joan Deary (Dreary) ‘s “A Legendary Performer, Volume1” performance blew the “Elvis” album off the charts? They both reached number #43 and number #50, respectively, on the same chart. Sure, the latter album eventually, throughout the years, sold more, but the 1973 studio LP actually sold enough to be awarded a Gold record album, but, still to this day, has not been certified.

This album was and is disappointment!Elvis last lp went to number one this went to only 52 on Billboard lp charts.Joan Deary was on the right track with including the five recordings from after hours used in the US version of Aloha. Felton Jarvis had just came back from being sick from kidney disease.He had is own agenda and songs he recorded.He received $750.00 per finished master,so he dumped all of what Joan Deary was responsible for, put his left overs and none commercial renderings on this LP.This LP and the Raised on Rock lp left a bad taste of decline in Elvis's sales.The main problem was Elvis never had a proper relationship with RCA. First record released after the great Aloha Album which reached No 1 ... recall how disappointed I was in this album from the King of Rock ... It was terrible and not even as good as some of the lower priced Camden albums. Most of songs were leftovers from 71 session deemed not good enough to be released when recorded . So hastly put together by RCA the album cover songs were not in same sequence as on record ... It became appropriately known by fans as The Fool Album which angered Elvis . After the excellent studio albums From Elvis in Memphis , Back in Memphis, Elvis Country and the grammy award winning He Touched Me... this was pathetic and the beginning of his decline
