This song was a dedication song to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. who had been assassinated in Elvis's hometown of Memphis just a few weeks prior. Elvis had met Dr. King and supported his movement. He was deeply saddened that this tragedy took place in his hometown. Elvis's live performances are worth exploring. I'd recommend checking out the 1970 Las Vegas performance of "Suspicious Minds". It's a much more playful and lighthearted side. His body of work is very diverse.

There's a lot to be said for this performance from it's origins to how Elvis felt about this song. It's arguably his best performance ever. He was the king of swag too. Although, I think that title is being challenged by Chris Stapleton who also oozes swag, live.

Here for Elvis. This song was written specifically for Elvis and expressed his feelings about the things going on at that time in the 60's. MLK had been assassinated not far from where Elvis lived. Then during the filming of this show Robert Kennedy was also assassinated and this song was created.

Just a very tiny detail; RFK was shot June 5, 1968, 2 days after preliminary work began on the special, before filming had begun. It was filmed June 17-June 29.

Never heard this song before in my life until 2 weeks ago after watching the movie. I have never heard this song played on the radio... ever!!! Elvis's strongest performance. This incredible performance which I've seen many times, popped up in my feed and so I just saw it and subscribed. Yeah I see other suggestions already down there like suspicious minds from Vegas in 1970. And I would also say maybe check him out as a really young man in 1956 on television appearances. Milton Burle show early 1956. Doing the song, Hound dog. But don't go for the short one go for the longer one because it includes the last 30 seconds or so where he unpredictably keeps going when the song is supposed to be over because the audience is just going nuts, and his band immediately adjusts, and he slows it down to half the speed and now that gives him even more room to like show those dance moves, which involves a lot of core strength by the way, doing all this stuff that's kind of moonwalk oriented and then also just like going up onto his toes with both legs while everything's bent and he's just partially crouched and then holding it for a little bit. And he still managed to keep singing man I think he was all over like maybe 20 years old during that stuff.

Here are some interesting facts. 1.this song was NOT!! dedicated to M.L.K, J.F.K or Vietnam Veterans, it was written for humanity in general. 2. After this show Elvis said he would never sing another song that didn't mean anything to him. 3. He never sang this song again.
