1960 I was 13 years old and my father bought a brand new white colored Mercury Monterey convertible with the big block 430 cubic inch V 8 motor. He drove one way only " pedal to the metal". I remember a trip we took between Bloomington and Rockford illinois, not too long after he purchased the car. We were heading north on route 51 and a 1956 chevy two door hopped up 283 ci V8 small block chevy with dice hanging on the rear view mirror, pulled up beside us.Two young guys were out flexing their "muscle car" muscles, and egged dad on to drag race. That was the wrong thing to do with the "ole man"...The youngsters hammered the accelerator to the floor and ran her up to about 110mph..Dad, ..ran up to their rear bumper and floored that 430 and we just cruised right on bye !..Dad gave the boys a big smile and a wave goodbye...LOL..I looked over at the speedometer and she was pegged way passed 120 mph . That 430 merc was a joy to behold ! Miss you dad RIP... db
