This car looks A LOT like my 1976 Olds Custom Cruiser wagon (which I sold a long time ago). I called it The Space Shuttle, due to it's size. Elvis' Caddywagon with only 8,000 on a bullet-proof motor is quite a find!

Yes, Elvis listened to other people's music. Hence, "TCB" from Bachman Turner Overdrive's "Takin' Care Of Business". He also listened to and sang four or five of The Beatles' songs. As well as Patsy Cline, Charlie Daniels, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, Ketty Lester......the list goes one.

In 1977 I was 10 years old. I was with my aunt at a Detroit metro area Cadillac dealer. In the showroom I recall seeing a pre 1977 Cadillac station wagon, as well as either a Cadillac funeral flower car or a Cadillac version of the El Camino. And my thought at the time was "why are these pre 1977 cars still in the dealer's showroom? Shouldn't they have been sold by now?" We hit several dealerships that day, and at another stop I saw a Seville for the first time. I didn't believe it at first, as I had never seen or heard of this "small" Cadillac before. And finally at another stop my aunt traded her 1972 Fleetwood Brougham (Sixty Special) for a 1977 Sedan DeVille, yellow on yellow on yellow leather. The 1977 Cadillacs were the sharpest news cars on the road at the time, although the new Thunderbird and Cougar were pretty awesome as well.

@@loucostabile You are welcome Lou. I enjoyed your video! No doubt good times with my aunt. Sadly, she died in 2016. She bought several new Cadillacs in her lifetime. Between her and her husband, they probably had more than a dozen! I was in Nashville in 1982 and recall seeing a 1950s era Cadillac in a museum, a car previously owned by Elvis. I believe it was pearl white with gold flecks in the paint. Beautiful car.

I owned a 1975 CADILLAC FLEETWOOD Sixty Sedan in the 1980's. It was white with a white vinyl top, and a "Antique Light Sandalwood" leather interior. That car measured 19-'6" in overall length, as near as I could measure it. It had the 500 C.I. Cadillac V-8 engine, and it was true 'road car'. Seeing this video brought back the memory of that magnificent vehicle that I was 'Blessed" to have owned for a period of 7 years.

What a Unique Gorgeous Car. Elvis had excellent taste. Do you know what the wheelbase is on this car? I grew up with the 76 Pontiac Grand Safari. It had the same clamshell electric tailgate and window and the third row forward facing seat. It was on a 127 inch wheelbase, was 231.4 inches long, 79.5 inches wide and had a 455 4-barrel... Grrreat Car. I drove it to a local College every day for 4 years.

This SW version was part of Cadillac's commercial use catalogue - hearse, ambulance - and was a special order, that's why they differ even in the very same production year, using parts from the Pontiac or Buick wagons to keep costs reasonable; the Cadillac Mirage was the pick up version with 204 units built. So, this vehicle is unique because of the owner...

Lou...another great video!...Folks frequently wonder why Cadillac never provided standard station wagons to the general buying public, particularly starting in the 1950's when became so popular...the reason I've heard is they simply wanted to keep themselves separate and unique from the rest of the GM line-up...do you know of any other reason?...thanks..

I still remember that white 1973 (that's 1973, not '74) Cadillac station wagon ("Caddiewagon") that I saw several times in the showroom at Carras Cadillac in Bellevue WA back when it was new. It had a dealer sticker on it. So I don't believe this was a custom made car. I only wish I could remember what the sticker price was. Unlike the Elvis car featured in this video, the body was all white (no vinyl roof). And the upper border of the rear door windows were not slanted, but perfectly horizontal, just like all the other GM 1972-1976 station wagons with the classic "hearse" styling. Whatever became of that car? I would LOVE to see you do a video on that car!
@GooglFascists
@GooglFascists 7 жыл бұрын
Yes they built several Caddy station wagons like that, using the same body as the big Olds and Buick wagons with the clamshell tailgate, (way too expensive to build today), a great design. You could put several sheets of 4x8 drywall or paneling in the back and completely close the tailgate.

When automobile makes, (Oldsmobile, Buick, Mercury...) were exactly what they said they were; you bought a Cadillac it was 100% Cadillac through and through! But the tune was hugely different then the original 472. The late sixties/ 1970 472 put out over 350 HP. This one was about torque and only 200 HP. The older higher compression 472 is the one to get if you want a collectable. IMO, the 1970 De ville convertible is the one. It had that hot rod 472 and was beautiful.
@Flies2FLL
@Flies2FLL 3 жыл бұрын
@@HiPlains1 Yeah, the early '70's DeVilles were beautiful. As to horsepower ratings, remember that old cars ['72 and older] were rated in gross horsepower, not net horsepower the way they are now. Typically, net horsepower is around 20% less than gross hp, so a 350 hp old engine would be about a 280 hp engine today. Or about the same as a good V6.

It may be 472 inches but was a much different motor then the older 472. They called these the 501 and it was a torque monster but only had a couple hundred HP. My dad had a 74 and a 70. The seventy had the 472 making more power then a vette. It was over 350 HP and a much higher compression. It would smoke the tires at a stop. The 74 was the first car I drove and it was very smooth but was nothing like the old 472. In the late sixties early seventies Cadillacs were hot rods. This one here, not so much. Not even remotely so. My dad's 74 was a fleetwood so it had the pillar. Also was the talisman model with only 4 seats. Had like a desk up front with a light and the back had a huge build in arm rest. It had huge crushed velvet pillow top like interior. It was a real cruiser with the best ride I can recall for interstates. About 8 MPG.

I remember back in the early Nineties seeing a 1972 Cadillac station wagon on display at a World of Wheels show in Boston that Elvis also owned. It was a pillarless Sedan de Ville-based wagon as this '74 is. Last year at the International Station Wagon Club convention in Buffalo, New York, there was a 1971 Cadillac wagon that was owned and bought new by Evel Knievel. This one is a Fleetwood-based wagon, and is therefore a pillared style, and unlike other big GM wagons at the time it had a two-way tailgate instead of the clamshell, and the third seat faced the rear instead of the front. It is called the El Deora (not to be confused with Eldorado), and is one of nine built. It His was painted bright yellow to match a leather jacket he often wore. The current owner runs an Evel Knievel museum in Niagara Falls. BTW, he told me Elvis was among those who owned the other eight, as were Dick Clark, Jackie Gleason and Colonel Sanders. We made it our Feature Wagon for the year, and as the club Historian, I did an article on it for our newsletter. Maybe you can do a video of it if you ever find it.

@dlwatib
@dlwatib 7 жыл бұрын
What they actually did was grafted on the station wagon parts from an Olds Custom Cruiser (or one of its equivalents from Buick, Pontiac or Chevrolet) to a Sedan de Ville. There are any number of custom coach builders who could have done this. They usually build ambulances and hearses though. It was ordered through Madison Cadillac of Memphis, TN.
@pcno2832
@pcno2832 6 жыл бұрын
They probably had to graft an extra 3" onto the standard roof, since the Deville wheelbase was 130" and I believe the Custom Cruiser was 127". That's probably where they eliminated to B pillar as well. The floor pan would also have needed an extension as well, then the Cadillac doors would have fit right in with maybe custom glass to match the roofline. I'll bet this car does not meet 1974 rollover standard (pillarless hardtops were fast disappearing in these years), but I'll bet that's a small price to pay for something this special.
