He had a natural vibrato that some classical singers would have died to have. Opera singers would work for years just to obtain that soft shaded vibrato that Elvis naturally had. When he was singing, every pore of his being was focused on making the song pure perfection. Once Elvis sang a song he OWNED it! Pure and simple!!

Loved this song by Elvis for many decades but never heard it in so much detail. Have my laptop hooked up to my hi fi and it's just mind blowing. The quality of the recording is phenomenal, can't beat those original analogue tapes, the stereo sound staging and layering is just astonishing.

Yes studio b in Nashville had a great sound to it. Bill Porter was responsible for the sound quality. Echo chamber ,Mic placement etc it all adds up to wonderful sound. Listen to other recordings of his in other studio just not the same

He seems to be on the point of doing it in true virtuoso operatic style on take 2, no doubt the producer had to reign him in a little bit by the time the master take was done. Elvis was capable of recording an entire album's worth of music in one single recording session- a remarkable feat.

To remember there was not much to enhancement with exception of reverberation (echo), thus the detail of Elvis' voice come through clear as does each instrument being played, and this was all done in one big room as a studio with just sound walls to separate the vocals and instruments, all being fed to a multi-channel mixer, then to Ampex Recorders either in monaural or stereo then pressed into the master recording to vinyl records. The sound re-production was superior to tape recording.

This recording session contains 3 full takes (1,2 & 4). Take 3 is basically 3 false starts. The mastered version starts at 10:45 and contains the over-dubbed piano which was recorded later. NOTE that the mastered version is actually made up of most of Take 4, and the ending part of Take 2 spliced in. Contrary to some speculation, it was not recorded in 1 Take...

Just like with the Beatles, it's such a incredible experience to hear the session takes of the songs Elvis recorded. Of course the Beatles recording outtakes/alternate versions are more plentiful, the King's are just as mesmerising. I remember reading from the cool booklet that came with the 60's box set that the piano was overdubbed a few days after the session. The state of the art at the time was 3 track tape so overdubs were still in their infancy. The FTD-Follow That Dream series of Elvis recordings is a goldmine but they're hard to track down. Thanks for posting this excellent piece of music history.
