During the Band Introductions in Las Vegas on 20 August 1970 at the midnight show, Elvis embarks on a spontaneous and genuine heartfelt tribute to his female backing singers!!
The Sweet Inspirations were founded by Emily "Cissy" Houston in 1950 and had some success as a R&B girl group throughout the fifties and sixties.
On his return to live performing in 1969, Elvis added "The Sweets" to his live band as his female backing singers. Cissy Houston would leave the group after this first Las Vegas engagement but wold be forever enshrined in Elvis folklore as it was her soprano which set Elvis into uncontrollable laughter on the "Are You Lonesome Tonight" laughing version.
A soprano would not join "The Sweet Inspirations" as part of Elvis' group, instead Elvis would appoint his own soprano, firstly with Millie Kirkham and then with Kathy Westmoreland until the very end.
"The Sweet Inspirations" themselves would join Charlie Hodge, James Burton and John Wilkinson as being the only ever present band members at every single Elvis Presley live show between 31 July 1969 and 26 June 1977.
