No. No, no, no, no, no. No. Nope. Not The Minty Fresh Imperials Seph. NOW THIS IS J.D. SUMNER & THE STAMPS QUARTET. The singers backing Elvis on this track are: J.D. Sumner (the bass singer you heard) Bill Baize Ed Enoch Donnie Sumner Richard Sterban As you get further on the members of The Stamps Quartet will change. J.D. Sumner and Elvis have a history and quite the friendship. I'll dive into ALL of that later. Right! So what you just reacted to was a studio rehearsal for 'Elvis On Tour' which took place at RCA Studio A in Hollywood, CA on March 31, 1972. Hours unknown. Producer: Felton Jarvis Engineer: Al Pachucki Musicians: Guitar: James Burton Guitar: John Wilkinson Guitar: Charlie Hodge Piano: Glen D. Hardin Bass: Emory Gordy Drums: Ronnie Tutt I'm guessing your former list guy gave you a whole bunch of these 'Elvis On Tour' 0/31/ 1972 studio rehearsal recordings. I have not heard some of these, if any, so this should be fun 😃💃 More Info Below: Traditional / Arranged Elvis Presley (Well now you'd better run) Run when I say, somebody's calling you You'd better run Run when I say, (somebody's calling you) You'd better run Run when I say, (somebody's calling you) I feel like my time has long gone Long gone, (my time is long gone) Well now goodbye false pretender Lord I cannot wait for you For the bible declares you're goin' to heaven Lord What the bible declares you do (Well now you'd better run) Run when I say, somebody's calling you You'd better run Run when I say, (somebody's calling you) You'd better run Run when I say, (somebody's calling you) I feel like my time has long gone Long gone, (my time is long gone) Long gone Well I met a false pretender Whose head was bending Lord I met him in the evening He was headed down that long lonesome road (Well now you'd better run) Run when I say, somebody's calling you You'd better run Run when I say, (somebody's calling you) You'd better run Get away from here, somebody's calling you I feel like my time has long gone Long gone, (my time is long gone), long gone Note by me: "You Better Run" is only noted as a [Traditional] song. As you can tell by the lyrics it is a Gospel song. It was first recorded on February 16, 1937 by The Heavenly Gospel Singers and was released in 1937 (the same year). But I am guessing that this song was in existence well before anyone thought to record it and most likely with many variations to both the lyrics and melody. As is the case with most of those old songs. GOLD STARS 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 THANKS FOR SHARING AS ALWAYS 🌹💐 TCB ⚡ & TLC ❤ & peace ✌& blessings to you & yours & to one & all here as well 💕

New to me! That was fun! I love the following story JD Sumner told. Elvis ( about 14 years old) came to the concerts of J.D. Sumner and the Blackwood Brothers concerts regularly. When he didn't appear after some time JD asked Elvis where he has been. Elvis couldn't afford the money. JD said from now on you don't have to pay any more and can come in through the back door. Later JD worked with Elvis for 7 years. He also did a tribute after Elvis death.

As others have commented J.D. Sumner was the bass voice. Elvis greatly admired him, and made no secret of the fact, and considered him one of his greatest friends. JD took it bad when Elvis passed.

J.D. Sumner is the low voice. In the song " Way Down," Elvis asked J.D. if he could sing lower and at that time J.D. hit an impressive double octave C!! He was a friend of Elvis' since Elvis was 14 years old!!

Elvis il più grande in assoluto 🔝 the best the greatest Forever. Hi Seph - you definitely need to see that after concert video where they are all around the piano having an awesome time! It's wonderful! JD Sumner said that many who sing low tend to growl. He made sure he was actually singing those notes rather than growling them. Not sure if his record was broken?

This is what Elvis most liked to do. Singing gospel off stage and venturing into bass singing. The lovely "It's Only Love" is a definite left over. Recorded and released in 1971. Also on the Elvis Back In Nashville album. Charlie Hodge, (stage manager when Elvis started doing concerts again in the late 60s) who starts off the song, is a friend from Elvis' army days. He was previously part of the quartet, The Foggy River Boys. Elvis asked him to join the group. He stayed at Graceland for many years. On stage, Charlie is just to the left behind Elvis, playing guitar, and also providing back up vocals/harmonies.

You'll find JD Sumner who Elvis called many times 'The lowest bass player in the world', featured on almost 'every' Elvis concert (and there were hundreds of them) from now until Elvis untimely death ... and even sang at Elvis funeral. God look after them both.♥

Its seem like a rehearsal in 1972, like we see in the Elvis on Tour documentary. The guy that plays the piano and begins the music and sings is Charlie Hodge (stage director). Then we have Elvis and Jd Sumner (the lowest voice) and probably the Stamps in the back.

Elvis use to thank JD for letting him sing on stage with him, that’s how much he admired him. JD found a 15 year old Elvis hanging around the back door of the stage in order to listen to the gospel singing of the Blackwood Brothers (Jd was a member at the time). JD asked him what he was doing and Elvis told him he didn’t have the money for a ticket but wanted to hear the music. JD let him in the back door-Elvis never forgot it!

I may have said it before, but I spoke with J.D. twice. The first time was in 1973 during intermission at an Elvis concert. It was about a five minute humorous encounter between us. I have called even his speaking voice as a sonic bass. The second and last time was at a Gospel sing in the early 90s. Lots of Gospel quartets were singing that night.

It's more of a rehearsal than an actual song recording. Say hello to a new name in the Elvis music family J.D. Sumner the lowest voice at that time, he was or is still in The Guinness World Of Records. The Imperials - In November 1971, because of scheduling conflicts, they decided to stop performing with Elvis. They were replaced by J.D. Sumner and The Stamps.

Seph, someone wrote that you hadn't reacted to 'It's Only Love' from 1970. This record was SO good that nearly 3 years after Elvis death in June 1980, it 'returned' to the British chart in a 'better recorded stereo version (at the time) and reached a high of number 3 in the British charts. A definite contended for one of Elvis Best love songs. (in my view)😀

I see you've been filled in on who the low, low bass voice is in this one. In 1972 J.D. Sumner had put together The Stamps quartet with the intention of retiring from singing. Elvis, however, had different ideas. When he hired The Stamps, he talked J.D. into singing with them. During his lifetime he wrote over 700 songs. He passed away in 1998 at the age of 73 and never did get around to retiring. Fun fact: When Elvis began attending the all-night gospel concerts at the age of 14, J.D. described him as the kid that would come backstage afterwards and ask all kinds of questions. He said he was kind of a pest. 🤣

That is JD Sumner You have entered 72. This is part of what's known as the Gospel session filmed for Elvis On Tour. He is the lowest bass singer ever recorded at the time. JD Sumner and the Stamps replaced the Imperials in 72. The only song i think you skipped was the re record of Love Letters The story is David Briggs the piano player in studio asked Elvis to re record it because he thought he could play the piano part in the beginning better.

@@SephPlays Oh man, Seph, you don't miss a thing. So sweet of you to reach out. I'd like to apologize. Over the past several days I've written some comments that were disrespectful. I removed a few of them last night and then some more this morning. I'm sorry about those and my behavior in general. You have awakened emotions in me that have long been dormant and that has led me to direct many of those feelings in your direction. And the more I have gotten to know you the greater those emotions have become. You have been gracious and kind about it all, but that isn't fair to you. Needless to say, this has been a real struggle for me. As a result I've taken a step back to reflect and reset. Please know that I didn't intend to burden you with the contents of my head, but I felt it would be a greater disservice to give you a disingenuous response to your caring question. Now I can only pray that my honesty wasn't a mistake. Btw, although I haven't watched it, I see you reacted to "So Cruel." Omar must be out of his mind today.
