Just FYI....Eastwood Ford Light Blue and most of the other more effective bullet powder coating agents are a type called polyester TGIC. When you shop for bullet powder coatings, the gloss varieties of those are the ones that will work best. The pigments used in the powder coatings are based on compounds which carry a charge of their own, which can help or hinder the adhesion to lead; that's why some colors will work better than others. The TGIC is a crosslinker which enhances coating ability and toughness, but because of its reactivity with organic materials is also a class 2 mutagen, which can cause cancer and tissue damage. Breathing the fine powder is probably the most dangerous kind of contact. It's highly advisable to wear goggles, nitrile gloves and a mask that effectively filters fine particles while pouring and shaking it in its powder form. Epoxy-based powder coatings, like the ones from Harbor Freight, are less hazardous, but they just don't apply or perform as well. As far as the mixing containers are concerned, those with the number "2" in the triangle are high density polyethylene and the ones with the "5" are polypropylene. Both types of plastic become negatively charged by pulling electrons away from materials rubbed against them, a property they share with the polyester-based powder coatings. When rubbed, lead gives up lots of electrons, so the bullets become positively charged by swirling in the container, attracting the powder particles which continue to adhere as they're dumped out. BTW, HDPE and polypropylene are also two of the food-safe plastics, though you can also find paint buckets made of HDPE, as shown by the "2" in the triangle. Having cancer can be a living hell, and it can happen years after exposures. When you demonstrate a procedure for beginners on You Tube, please remember to teach the safety aspects as well. I really do appreciate how you've passed along all your valuable tips on powder coating methods, but I don't want to see you or anyone else get sick because the precautionary info, which should be on the packaging, is tucked away where most people don't see it on a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). It seems like we don't have time for all the things we have to do these days, so we take shortcuts with the things we enjoy to fit them into our spare time. Even lead dust exposure can cause cancer and poisoning, and contact with lead dust and TGIC powder together magnifies the potential several times over. I've worked with numerous cancer patients and have had family members who suffered cancer after toxic exposures, so it worries me when I see good people at risk. TGIC is dangerous enough that it's been banned for industrial applications in some countries. I've been watching your how-to videos because I became interested in powder coating, but I wanted to share some of the other things I learned because everyone should know the risks are real, and that if you take the proper precautions, can be greatly reduced. All the safety equipment is available at Home Depot (paint dept.) or Harbor Freight, and it's pretty cheap. Police, fireman, and healthcare workers use this equipment all the time. @C-Bomb No... one of the 3M respirators is what you should use with powder coating... even when curing (baking) it, as it emits fumes. And dont ever re-use your device to cure them for food again.

I found that instead of using a wire basket To bake the bullets in I use a silicone baking sheet on the toaster pan when baking and immediately quench them in a bucket of water by flopping the whole tray in Works great and almost no bullets sticking together

Obviously just a little note, If steel isn't your game, Bullets can be recovered from the embankment and melted down, cast into bullets all over again. It's not only (Green) however, it saves your money as well. a cycle of reuse reduces your overall cost, once you do the math, all you are paying for is powder and primers. Range recovery material is an extremely cheap way to go and the bullets are just as good as the original castings. Good video Buddy, Btw, we are all out of Maxwell House bold. Dave.

I recently ordered the Eastwood Hardcoat Ford Light Blue for Powder Coating my Cast Lead Alloy Projectiles. Eastwood sent me Hardcoat Cadillac Blue by mistake. This Eastwood Powder,coated the projectiles instantly. The projectiles had such a thick powder on them that I had to vigorously shake the steel mesh tray to remove the excess powder. I never used any Eastwood powders to give any conflicting reviews since I started Powder Coating my projectiles. I have been using the Harbor Freight Red Powder, that can be difficult to get it to stick to my projectiles. I enjoy your videos especially the informative ones. They have helped me a lot. Especially when I used to use Allox to Coat my projectiles which is messy and stinks when shot.

Another great video. What about your most current process. Things have obviously evolved over the years you have been posting powder coating videos. Is you most current technique to place uncoated bullets in a 140-degree warm oven for specifically 4 minutes; then to immediately swirl in the plastic bowl for a minute before screening out excess powder and off into a preheated oven. Question is do you do the 400-degrees for 20 minutes or the low temperature/ low heat technique of 250-degree bake for 13 minutes and then quenching in water? After seeing all the videos I could find I realize some techniques have given way to new ways and process is dynamic. I hope to benefit from your evolving experience. Thanks

Basket wise, Amazon has metal powder coated baskets sold as drawer organizers. I find them sturdier than folded mesh, but mainly the bullets don’t stick to them as much/fewer blemishes.

I am curious, does the bare spots on those bullets that were stuck together effect the way the bullet travels when it is fired? I seems to me is might cause the bullet to tumble or something.

In one of your other videos (Aug.18,2017) you were using a lower temp after powder coating to lessen the tempering of the bullets. Does water quenching after baking have an effect on hardness? Is hardness that much of a concern when the bullets are powder coated?

Eastwood sells a real inexpensive, basic powder coat gun. You just stand them up on a cookie sheet (not touching), clip the ground wire onto the sheet, dust them with the powder from the gun, then put them in the oven. Preheating is good to make sure there is no moisture in your part (you can powder coat all kinds of things) and to help it stick where the static does not work as the powder melts on contact. No "water quench" to unstick them from each other, just perfect polymer jackets.

I had an Eastwood powder coat system but a few years back traded it for a nice old Sears remote motor band saw that needed a little tuning up. The guy who got that system with set all his bullets standing up, and powder coat them with the spray gun and then gently try to get them in the oven without knocking them over. I like Elvis's Method better.

I haven't had any luck with shaking the weights by hand. I just picked up a case tumbler today. I'll cast up a bunch of 223 bullets and run them in the case tumbler and see if that works. I've been using Harbor Freight black.

Just another little fyi for the folks watching...THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PERFORMANCE OF DIFFERENT POWDERS. I started with Harbor Freight powders. They work and I got used to them. But when I tried a "better" powder. By a manufacture named "Smoke" I was amazed at the difference. Huge difference. I used to struggle to get enough powder on them. Often having to use two coats. now with Smokes powder I have to shake it well to get the excess off so the coating is not too thick. I am sure Eastwood is similar.

Two years later, and the questions I have are 1: Prep for the bullets after casting and sizing to just before powder coating. Are they cleaned of sizing lube, and if so, with what? First off I assume sizing beforehand as it will be thicker after the powder is added and then I assumed sizing afterwards to get to the final size. I tried acetone and there mush have been a little moisture from it still on them because it melted the powder to the bullets in an inconstant way, from no coating to huge blobs and I'm still soaking them to clean them! 2: The smallest hardware cloth I can find is 1/4" and the .224 bullets can pass through it, so where can we get something smaller for the .224 bullets? I can get some custom stuff at MC Master Carr but I'd need to sell my car to fun the purchase!

I just started and have watched a lot of your videos. My first two batches of 300Blk bullets came out a little splotchy. I was using a #5 plastic container and i preheated the bullets to about 140°F for 4mins like you said might help. It’s pretty dry where I live and I was using Eastwood Ford Light Blue, do you do anything else to encourage static electricity or no? Just curious. I mean mine weren’t bad by any means, I just could see a little splotchiness and I’m assuming that’s maybe due to the container or maybe I’m just overlooking something. I know you can acetone wash them first but I was hoping to not have to do that. Maybe it’s because I quenched the bullets in water during casting and the minerals in the water maybe affected it?

Hello Elvis. I have some Hornady copper jacketed FTX bullets I bought to reload 454 cartridges. They are sold as .451 diameter but in reality the diameter is .450. They do not shoot well. When I reload with .452 diameter bullets I get much better groups. Can I powder coat the bullets to increase the diameter from .450 to .452?

Yes. Using the powder coat featured in this video, Eastwood brand: Ford Light Blue, youll gain anywhere from 2 to 4 thousandths in diameter. Size down after coating, if needed. You will probably not need to size at all, considering your starting diameter.

Tell me what you think. With powder coating, I get double duty out of my .356 diameter, 124 gn TC mold. I double coat the bullets (Harbor Freight Red) and size to .358 diameter for my 38/357 mag.

Well I'm not having any luck powder coating.seams to be thick as heck,I haven't used my sizing app yet but wow hope they fit thru..and what about the bottom..had parchment paper first time stuck to bottom and all the excess around bottom.then did in a wire thing like you got, and they stick to it and you lose some powder coat at the bottom..

Hours of testing and trial and error reduced to 18 minutes. What a guy to share. I know you love a challenge, to here is my challenge to you: I have hundreds of old cast pre lubed bullets that have been hot and cold (severe changes) over the years and some of the lube has come off and some is hard as can be. What would you suggest to get the old lube off and powder coat them???? I have tried to heat them and melt it off, But the powder does not stick. ( I did try harbor freight powder only, did not want to waste my Eastwood) It FAILED big time, just threw them into the lead pot to recycle.

I like to watch your videos, they are really informative. I am just setting up to try powder coating my cast bullets, and sent off for a couple eastwood powders to try. One is the green that you mentioned working so well in another video. The other is a gray, but when it came in I noticed that it says it is a Hotcoat corrosion resistant Primer... can this still be used like a powder coat, or do I need to just get rid of it or maybe use it as a primer only for some hard to cover color I may run into down the line?

how do you get your bullet weights right? All of mine are too heavy, I suspect it has to do with alloy. I think I may have too much lead in my alloy mix. Lee TC 124 grain, my bullets turn out 137 to 140 grains. Please help if you see this.

Yes but the shape in the size of the bullet will determine if you have feeding issues or not in the semi autos for instants in the Blackhawk revolver it has a separate wheel chamber that excepts 9 mm those are really good to load wide cutters in.

I hate "scare" posts, but, the hardware cloth is coated with zinc, I had my first case of metal fume fever (zinc) in 1971,, and EVER since I have worked real hard to avoid zinc fumes. Hardware cloth in a 400 degree oven will release zinc fumes. Google "metal fume fever", and decide for yourself. I would be happy to give the details of my effects,, if anyone wants to hear, in an email. I think a stainless steel basket will be on my shopping list.

The powder doesn’t stick to my bullets, even when I pre-heated them. I wish I could get such an even coat of the dry powder! Does lead hardness have any influence? Mine just do not take the powder, almost like there’s a releasing agent in the lead.

Is it necessary to use your vibratory tumbler to properly coat the bullets in one step? FC45 seems to prefer this method.

since its not easy to find .358 cast molds, could i use a .356 cast mold,then powder coat so the bullet will come out about .358 to .359 and then size to .358. or just load at .358 to .359 because of the lube or powder coat

Sounds like weather you're using #5/#2 plastic bucket it doesn't matter about static. In fact I don't think you can build up any static in a plastic bucket!
