Just watched Secrets of Great Britain’s Cathedrals on Ely Cathedral, just amazingly beautiful and full of history. We could not build this today. Want to visit later in the year. Thanks for the birds eye tour. Loved it. Cheers, Chris from Australia.

I had been up the Lantern Tower before, so when I brought my wife and daughter to Ely, we booked tours of both towers. Both tours were magnificent, and its something they will remember the rest of their lives. Ely Cathedral is one of the best kept secrets in England: a world class cathedral, but without the crowds you find in London, Paris, and elsewhere. And don't miss Evensong.

Fantastic video and what a great surprise to see Dave, we used to play 5 a side football in the 90's. Having been a local resident for most of my life, i must get round to doing this exciting looking tour next summer.

Spent 6 years admiring the view from ground level. Also read about the amazing story why the octagon / lantern was built. What I read was that one night the monks heard the sound as of mighty thunder. The following morning the [previous] tower at the central crossing had fallen down. As part of the provision of materials for the new - unique - design, all of England was scoured looking for the long oak timbers needed for the lantern. And this was all in the 1400's. In my day [in the 1900's] there was as wooden model of this - perhaps its still on show. Anyway, very many thanks for showing the internals of the Octagon.

No power tools, no steam power, no electrical power. no computer models. Everything by hand, rope, pulley, scaffold, saws chisels, hammers, hand tools. Some animal power from oxen or horse teams to lift stone on pallets. That this was built at all is miraculous but the skill of the artisans is jaw-dropping. Look at that tower. If I'm not mistaken the ceiling painting decorative scheme came later.

You are indeed not mistaken. The paintings on the roof of the cathedral as you enter (the big long corridor I don't know the actual term for it, sorry) and on the angels on the octagon tower doors were painted by the Victorians.

When I was at primary school. In the late 1950s the whole class was taken up to the West tower of the cathedral. No guides just the teacher. I was terrified but went up 🙈🤣🤣
