WaAlaikum Salam, Being a disbeliever is one thing and getting died as a disbeliever is another thing. If someone is alive and he is a disbeliever, still there are chances that one day he will know the actual God, where he can become a believer, so yes we can pray for him. And once a man died as a disbeliever then there is no scope for him (according to laws) because till the last breath he was rejecting Allah to be the actual God. After that in the hereafter, it's the matter of God how He wants to deal with him, after all, we all are His creations.
