First I would like to say thank you for the great video it was definitely accurate. Manny was like a father to me, I used to box for Kronk as a heavyweight and It was the best time of my life as a kid growing up boxing at the famous Kronk Gym. Manny treated me like his son, allowing me to drive his convertible Rolls Royce to my wedding and also attending my wedding as well... Manny was the best thing that happened to me and hundreds of young men like myself, lastly Manny was instrumental with me becoming a part of the Detroit Police Department.

I was in the Kronk gym in the mid eighties , watched Milton McCleary , Jimmy Paul , Thomas Hearns , great place , everyone there was very friendly to me , great atmosphere , it was no wonder to me why so many champions came out of that place , Emanuel Steward was a special person and great for boxing !

I absolutely believe karma is real. Emmanuel himself said Gerald is probably the only true evil fighter he ever trained.! Fact Don't get me wrong his fights where incredible but known the man behind the fighter is pure evil makes me no fan of his. I also don't wish his vegetable status on him that I have empathy for. All the warning signs where there he said many times he's getting crazy painful head aches and like the old school fighters sparred as hard as possible. While in London days before the fight he was interviewed and was blinking abnormally like he did in the fight with Nigel Benn. Both the ref and his corner failed him in that night he got hurt.💯 🥊

First you don't "know" what he did allegations only ,yes he had pits and probably was around fighting them everything else is just talk . Second you can "know" what he was as a fighter and imo he was incredible, devastating lh to the body. I wish he would have stayed with Stewart I don't think for a second this would have happened to McClellan. The ref let benn get away with everything but stops Gman at every turn ,also benn should have lost in the first rnd and Been counted out.

Steward loved fighters with power in their cross. Every champion under him had the perfect Jab + Cross style. His style beat the test of time. As he took so many champions from different generations & developed them into their final form.

The one thing I think is most underestimated about the style/mentality is while attacking it is not reckless. It is efficent application of pressure with great technique and not reckless. If you apply pressure and take risks your opponent will normally start to become defensive and more passive and therefore in being active you control tempo and create openings for counters when they start to feel the need to do something. Its a great style but requires complete commitment and trust in it as a style

You got me thinking. Got back into sparring and I noticed the more I put pressure the more people become more defensive. Krona gym was ahead of its times. I leave in the Detroit area and hope to visit there new location some day.

I saw fury say in an interview that after boxing defensively all fight and finally getting caught by wilders big right in the 12th,, after getting back up, he went on the attack simply to survive the round, and noticed how he didn't like being pushed back... that was the exact moment he knew he had to back to the kronk!

Great video. One Kronk fighter I was surprised you didnt cover was Andy Lee. Lee lived in Manny Steward's house for many years. They were incredibly close and their relationship I think kind of personified the notion and ethos of Kronk as a family rather than just a training facility. Lee in his autobiography said that losing to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr felt like a betrayal of Steward. In many ways I think Steward got the results he achieved through love as much as anything else. His fighters adored him as well as respecting him. The life lessons he taught those guys went way beyond showing them how to throw an effective jab. Manny was truly one of a kind.

Emmanuel Steward became a friend of mine back around 1989 when I played the national anthem on trumpet with my boss Little Joe. We played numerous times for the Kronk West out of Tucson. He was a great guy. RIP

Hey Jamie! I have been watching your videos for a long time and have to say that this is probably your best work so far! I really liked the use of graphic effects in this video and also the hybrid nature of this video being a quasi-documentary and boxing style breakdown. You have really come a long way and I get most excited when I get a notification for one of your new videos. Keep up the good work, my man! But also rest! After all you need to take care of yourself first and foremost. On a side note: The thing with the rear hand being held in front of the chin makes your right cross a devastating punch, because you put your entire bodyweight into it. If you keep the rear hand to your side to block hooks the kinetic chain is interrupted, because your hand moves in a different speed compared to your body. When the rear hand is held in front of the chin it is synchronised with your entire body, whereas the hand to the side results in more of an arm punch. This really shows why Kronk fighters had such strong crosses. Classic old school technique ;)

Emanuel Steward was a great man, how this eloquent, intelligent man and professional engineer got into boxing is fascinating, definitely worthy of a Hollywood movie. I’m surprised theres still no monument to Emanuel, and it’s a total disgrace that HIS world famous Kronk gym was allowed to rot, be looted and burn under the city of Detroits nose. A building named after another JFK (John F Kronk), and a former Detroit city council man, a very sad irony. Yet the city of Philadelphia has a monument to a fictional Boxing character, go figure.

I was a poker dealer in Atlantic City back in the 90's. I heard the gentleman speak that was sitting right next to me and I immediately recognized his voice and noticed on his shirt cuffs were the initials "EM". I turned and looked and low and behold, I was dealing poker to Emmanuel Steward. I spoke with him and he was actually very humbled that I recognized him just by his voice alone. He was very polite and seemed like a true gentleman. R.I.P. Sir.

Well done video and I'm happy that you also showcased the current times w/Sugarhill & HW Champ Fury. Coach Manny (rip), the Kronk staff & 5555 McGraw Ave (the old building) changed & saved a lot of lives in Detroit. In the 1980's economy that struggled with automotive work slow down and crack invading urban areas, Kronk's gave youth a place to go, something to do besides get into trouble, build some self pride and Coach Manny was like everyone's favorite Uncle/Mentor/Positive Influence. I had two uncles that Boxed in the Marines, they are the ones that got me going to Kronk's. In my 50's now, I still workout a bit to stay in shape and I can still hear Coach Manny's voice in my head when I'm working (grateful for that!). Don't forget how great of an announcer he was as well- I miss hearing him ringside calling and breaking down fights... he was the Yoda of Boxing. Coach Manny (rip), the old building and all of the trainers & fighters will never be forgotten- FOREVER KRONK!

I'm very familiar with the Kronk gym during the mid 70's before it became world famous ! I started training there back in the fall of "75" which was two years before Hearns turned pro ? I was at the old Olympia Stadium that night in the fall of "77" when both Mickey Goodwin & Thomas Hearns both turned pro ! As a matter of fact Goodwin was the headliner (main-event) and Hearns was the co-mainevent ! Of course they both won their pro debut's by knockout ! So I have such fond memories of Emanuel Stewart and Kronk !

Excellent documentary. My favourite Kronk fighter and one of my all time favourites is The G-Man, Gerald Mc Clellan. He was my era for a start, he fought in my two favourite weight divisions 160 and 168. The man was probably a natural light heavy but cut a lot of weight, very athletic, granite chin, and murderous punching power. He also had all that great Kronk boxing skill and accuracy, absolute machine of a fighter. Gerald exploded on to the scene, I couldn't believe we had yet another marvelous talent to add to the already stacked middle and super middleweight divisions in the early to mid 90s. About the video itself though, I don't see the point in purposely distorting perfectly good footage. Was it for effect? I'm sure fans would rather watch as clear images as possible. 🥊

Yup I really want to do a video on G-man for many of the reasons you discuss. In terms of the footage it was partly for effect and also copyright issues. If you take footage direct. The footage can get blocked. This took many many edits to get accepted in its final version. Appreciate the feedback though.

So I grew up in small gym innFort Worth that was cranking out champions as well. In fact Kronk was the only gym that could fuck with us. What made Kronk different was Steward’s philosophy on boxing. His approach was knockouts sell. So he trained his fighters to go for the knockout in each fights, which the networks loved. Simple as.

I think Mike mccallum trained at the kronk gym before he moved to the duva's, when he fought milton mccrory he wanted payback on one of manny's boxers because steward had promised he'd get mccallum a fight with duran but he gave the fight to hearns instead.
