What I do is think of the C major scale (or sections of it) as melodic lines. So if a song was playing C D E F as a melody, you could technically play the harmonized version from this video.

In basic terms, it means adding a note or chord to an established melody.

You can use this in songs that have similar melodies as the major scale. For example, if a song’s melody goes: C D E F, you can use the chords that are played for those four notes.
