I was torn between the Xiaomi Mi Box S and this one. I have read the reviews on the Ematic, and quite a few say it's better than the Xiaomi. I'm just concerned about whether it will handle my 5TB external hard drive. One review said it didn't "see" it and he had to download a file reader or something from the Playstore, others said it could read their external HD (but didn't specify the sizes in TB). Do you know maybe? Will I be able to use the 5TB external hard drive?

@@jamesrishmany7989 Hi there. I'm enjoying the Ematic so far. I asked the Makro rep last Sunday about being able to use my 5TB hard drive (or any for that matter). He was honest and knowledgeable enough to know that hard drives don't work (I already knew that the hard drive ends to be in the Ematic format). He said none of the TV boxes do. I was crushed...but bought it anyway. I told him I'd return it if the work-around didn't work (installing file browser/reader). TBH I struggled alot last Sunday (not the Ematic's fault)..but *_only_* because my 5TB hard drive was actually corrupt (according to the Ematic, but I didn't believe it 'cos I thought it was just saying that 'cos it wanted me to format the hard drive to the Ematic format, whatever that is 'cos I couldn't find it anywhere...obviously I wasn't about to and couldn't move alllll my series and movies to my laptop, reformat and then move earthing back) and I didn't know. I plugged the 5TB hard drive into my laptop (I had tested it the day before and I didn't get any error messages, but I could've missed it and I'd tested it plugged directly into a TV and it was fine) and Windows said it needed repairing...AH! So I let it repair, took like 2 minutes. In my struggles trying to get a file browser d/l to the Ematic (let me rephrase...they all download perfectly, no issues with the Ematic, but 'cos of the corrupt hard drive nothing would play and the files didn't show up). I had also downloaded my old faithful VLC Media Player, I've been using it for years on all my devices, and I know it plays anything and even "repairs" faulty vidoes...and not even that would read the files. Anyhoo, once Windows repaired the hard drive, I tried it again (I d/l a random file browser just to test it) in the Ematic and VOILA!! There were all my files on the browser I'd downloaded and they were playable! I tried VLC again and all my files were there too and played as usual. DSTV Now, Netflix, Showmax, KZbin are all there. But they do require updating as this video says. It didn't want to update, and just kept saying "pending" and I know from when getting a new phone one time, I had the "pending" issue too and nothing happens. So I went to the Playstore app and cleared the cache and the data. I'd also cleared the various apps' data and cache too I think. And I think it still said pending after that. Then I changed to my actual wifi router (I use an old phone as my hotspot-on-the-go) and it downloaded all the updates. Did a quick test on each and they all worked fine. I can't speak to Google Chrome working, as I haven't used it on the Ematic. I'm used to just Googling stuff on my phone. The Google Assistant mic is very responsive...all the while using Playstore and finding file browsers I used the mic and it found it every time. I used it to open the Playstore too, it had no problems understanding me and didn't misopen something else. I didn't need to register my voice. Setting up the Ematic using my android device was a cinch too. I haven't tried mirror casting yet either. I also bought the Volkano 3-in-1 Smart TV Remote Control with built in keyboard and TouchPad (also a gaming controller...shaped sort've like an Xbox controller). Works beautifully. Granted I only remembered to test it today, (in case I needed to return it for not working or something, being the 7th day within which to return an item to Makro). Very responsive too and I love it so far. I haven't tried gaming with it yet though. I think you can, using one of the downloadable file browsers, but I tried so many I forget which one has it, but I think you can transfer stuff from your android device to the Ematic. I definitely saw it on one of them. On my MyGica I used ShareIt, which worked well enough. But I haven't tried transferring files from my Android device to the Ematic yet. So yeah...I do recommend the Ematic. She's a nifty little device and very fast. Let me know of you get one and also if you have any issues.

Good review but To be very honest, there is nothing one gets out of buying this box from Safaricom. I mean not even Showmax comes installed in it. You are honestly better of getting the Mi Box s or Mi-stick which does the exact thing as what this offers. Plus the RAM is only 2GB so 4K does not handle well on this (and given the limited 4K content HD is good enough)

I have bought the Ematic Tv Box and when i insert my MicroSD or Flash Stick into the box i can view these devices but it requests me to Format or eject these items. I did format 1 of my flash sticks (on the ematic box) which then failed to read on my laptop. Is there any way that i can overcome this or side load apps?

The Mali 450 GPU in this box is very old and outdated to keep cost down. Rather look for a Android box with a better GPU like a Mali G31 at least.

I have that same question I just asked him. I have a 5TB hard drive that's suddenly stopped working on my Mygica 🤬 (I tested the 5TB hard drive on my laptop and smart TV - plugged in directly to the TV and the files are all there...let me tell you I thought I'd lost alllll my movies and series, but its the Mygica that won't pick it up anymore. It picks up my 1TB still though). Did you come right? I read a review for the Ematic (on Takealot) that you need to download a file browser from the Playstore. Exerpt of the review *"...The only reason for four stars is that it natively does not recognise USB hard drives and wants to format them to it's own file system. To solve that, I just a file browser downloaded from the play Store."*

@@veesea8889 hey, yes that’s correct, although he didn’t come back, I downloaded VLC from the play store, and that worked very well to read my usb video files, the machine itself doesn’t read video files directly from the usb drive, so just download VLC and ur good to go🌸😁

Turns out my HDD was corrupt 😬, so even when I downloaded VLC (used it for years, so I couldn't understand why even that didn't work). The Ematic said my HDD was corrupt (on the off-chance it would work, I plugged the HDD in, without downloading any apps), but I didn't believe it, cos it played fine on my laptop amd other TV. However in a forum I frequent when I have tech issues, one of the tech-gurus there asked what format my HDD is in. I wasn't sure so I plugged it into the laptop, and Windows said the HDD had errors and to repair now. I must've missed that notification yesterday. But I repaired it. Downloaded a file browser (any old one, it was just to test) on the Ematic and the HDD was visible...happy day! I then tried VLC again, and PRESTO! the drive is visible there too. I was so happy, 'cos I was so disappointed that I'd have to return the device tomorrow. I was really enjoying the Ematic so far, despite the HDD issues....especially the voice Google assistant 😁👍 The device itself is fast, and remote is very responsive, including the voice assistant. I also bet the 5TB HDD will work on the Mygica too. But I'll check it at a later stage, I'm too busy enjoying my content from my HDD on my new toy now 😎👍 I'll try download games soon, I bought one of those gaming TV remote goodies too...even though I have actual gaming consoles 😊

Who will need to watch local TV channels when there is Netflix, KZbin, Showmax and Chrome 😉. This is great for cord cutters with unlimited Internet, metered internet is too expensive. 8GB is just sad, I prefer booting Apps and Games from the internal storage, external storage is great for media. Can you also test casting from an Apple device? Great review!
