The Alpha and the Omega. As a Catholic, I do believe that there is heaven and that there is a hell. But I'm curious as to how this priest can say that the concept of hell is related to the love of God? How can it be that God sends people to hell because he loves them? If the priest had said that God sends people to purgatory because he loves them, then that would definitely make more sense. Doesn't the term "punishment" itself mean that it is not permanent? It is the justice of God that sends people to hell, not his love.

Could be that mans free will is gifted by divine love, and we are loved no matter our choice. Every moment we are offered choice and chance to repent. Respect for our free will is not upheld with virtue by many, though so few understand its eternal choice to be crushed underfoot. God made hell to allow this choice

He answered your question in the homily. It would be a worse punishment for the souls to be in God's presence. It would hurt them MUCH worse if God forced them to be in his presence. So out of Love, God allows them go where they desperately want to go, which is hell, which lessens their torment. God allows hell to exist, out of his love.

It's like an extreme case of "Be careful what you ask for. You might get it." If you can't bear to be around God because you know He can see all of your unrepentant habits and sins, then the escape is into a place where God won't go. If you want total separation from God, then that would be a desire for Hell. The worst punishment comes from enduring the despair, knowing that you are outside of his will and far from his love.
