I've had 2 of these for about a year now & they definitely put out better heat than anything I've ever owned but they rusted so bad in a matter of months & I have them on a covered patio. I unassembled both of them, sanded down to bare metal & repainted with rustoleum 2000 degree engine primer & paint, I finished one & I've been using for about a month now, so far so good but it's very disappointing to have an expensive outdoor product do so poorly outside. I just purchased the even embers patio heater from tractor supply at 1/4 of the price so I'm excited to see that compares to my big timber. If it's anywhere close, I'm going to buy a couple of those instead.

Very helpful review, rust is my first concern, smoke the second. It's hard to believe they would make an outdoor product that rusts so quickly, like every customer is going to be unsatisfied. Anyway, I saw the Even Embers before this one, likely give that one a go..

I also have 2 of the Big Timber heaters. I have owned them for 4 years. I use mine then after they cool down I vacuum out ash & cover them with a cover on an uncovered patio. Being raised in the oilfields of West Texas I know a little something about steel. Anything & I mean anything made from steel is going to rust once the paint wears off. My 2 stoves still look & perform like new. Every other spring after the heater season is over I strip down & repaint with the 2000 degree paint cover & store. As far as the Embers Patio heaters which I've looked at are a 1/3 of the price for a reason. The entire heater from top to bottom is regular thin steel. On the regular Big Timber the base, entire smoke stack, & pellet box are 304 stainless steel. They have a new all stainless steel version called "Big Timber | Revere Edition". Also if you go to Wood Pellet Products web site you can reorder any replacement part for their stoves.

I have had great luck with mine. I use it often, buy pallets of pellets. It has a great patina and throws off all kinds of heat. Definitely comfortable into the teens. Vacuum the interior from time to time and clean the glass with fireplace glass cleaner. Love it! buying the stainless steel Revere version today.

Good comprehensive review. I live in the middle of Montana and use cord wood for a heat source, Been interested in swapping out for a pellet stove. However, needing a ‘non-powered’ unit, since we can loose electricity from time to time. I like the idea and concept of the gravity flow pellet stove. So, here is my question…I understand this video is about the patio Pellet stove, for outside gathering…..however, why cant this also be used for inside heat source, as long its properly vented to the outside, such as, the original stove pipe from the wood stove. The patio stove would be used as supplemented heat source, since I have a gas furnace and electric if needed. I am sure in Colorado…much like here in Montana…cant have too many options and having a non-electric/gravity fed pellet stove….may be worth considering. I like the clear glass to see the flames. If you folks do become a dealer….could be interested down the road. Have a great week form Montana.

Verified (former)owner of one of these pellet heaters. I had it for 2 years and its completely rusted away. .There are a number of design flaws both mechanically(fuel feed) and pyrotechnically. The steel material used are cheap low carbon steel. The coatings used for this ‘outdoor’ product is inexpensive ‘hightemp’ bbq paint, which, if applied with proper precoatings could reduce the oxidization process… But there is none. Corners are neutral ‘sharp’ geometry with little paint adhesion. The adjustable feet rust out and leave oxide residue all over your patio. The gravity feed hopper has a restrictor plate that was ill conceived, and will not stay in place if you try to move unit. The pyro burn in the chamber has a front burn does not burn to the rear of the stove due to the pile of incoming fuel. Hence the glass windows you just cleaned for the umpteenth time are black in 10min. Smoke. For all the griping about smoke, I was generally pleased about the lack of smoke after an acceptable firing period. 8-10 min. Actual heat (highest btu pellets)from top of stack is severely lacking, unless you are standing on the unit. Any kind of breeze and i would say a zephyr of wind of 2mph will blow any btu value away. The top deflector was designed not to reflect heat down, but likely because they (mfr) did not have the correct tooling. (Bending sheets is cheap and easy)

Wow, interesting. Definitely something to look into further, to see if this is generally across the board….or just your unit. I like that this channel allows views and experiences that does not always go with narrative. Does not distract from my interest, however, does allow me to more cautious and continue to weigh options.

My friend Craig asked me to work with him in parts department for Timberline wood stoves. First thing they ask me too do is weld. Then to increase weld size, which I did. Then asked about parts experience. Craig laughs says, "I've got degree in Education teaching math. He can do anything in this shop"! Then with experience working for gem-top canopies breaking records. So they hired me. I love organization, after reviewing production, I suggested tasks made easier an helped improve production quality. Then I moved too just off San Juan Islands Craig moved too Michigan to help mother in law through surgery. He checked doors an Windows during heavy ice storm. Fell, broke his neck an froze overnite in ice storm! I miss Craig! Not so much Timberline!

My same friend from timberline stoves, Craig, an friends were going sailing on Saturday. But Friday we went too local Harley shop where I talked too my friend Terry. Terry an I knew each other with dad's fishing partners. Terry always wanted to fly so he joined military. Went to Academy an became a pilot. Then a jet an test pilot. He was nominated to fly space shuttle but new wife says no too space! So Terry became commander of air National Guard. As commander he flew jet too Miramar Naval air station. There Terry participated in "Top Gun"! So while I'm talking to Terry at Harley shop, talking about sailing, I'm thinking, real Top Gun!! Craig, Harry an I are out in sailboat on Timothy Lake, when we hear sounds of jets getting louder. Then we see 4 jets drop down from tree level too water level, jets making rooster tails over water. 4 jets split into 2s an split our sailboat. I see Terry waves at me while rocking his wings at us. The 2 group's split mt Hood an form up on Terry back too Portland! Everyone in boats are screaming, waving arms in air, shouting and yelling cheers. They went nuts went I shouted "Top Gun"!
