My now long gone old Mum, who would be 99 in August used to roll around laughing. She was a sweet woman, very gentle and hated swearing but somehow forgave Billy for his indiscretions. She said she felt if she ever had him round for a meal or a cup of rea she would instantly feel at home with him. I think that is his appeal. He is for al sorts of people. Very funny man.

There are comedians who tell jokes and those that tell stories. Billy is THE best at hilarious stories! I was fortunate to see him once in New Zealand. At one point in the show I couldn't breathe from laughter. The next day my body ached like I'd gone over board at the gym when in fact it was just from laughing so much.

I can never find my favorite Billy clip but it's where he watches Jaws on a plane going on vacation and the next day feeling a bit jet lagged he falls asleep on an inflatable ring whilst at the beach and wakes up 2 hours later but when he opens his eyes there's no beach in sight and he screams blue murder until he realised the beach is behind him.

So thankful that I got to see Billy live on his final tour. I'd waited over 40 years to see him perform in person, and he didn't disappoint in any way shape or form. Twice voted the greatest comedian of all time on Channel 4 (I know, but whatever!) beating Richard Pryor into second spot both times. Absolute legend.

Billy Connolly is my ultimate favorite comedian every time i watch anything he has done i cant stop laughing and he got better and better as the years went on . I was waiting for my mum to meet me outside the usher hall in edinburgh and he was a few paces away from me . A fan ran up to him shouting mr Connolly ! he turned around and said its Billy what can i do for you ? the guy got an autograph from him and they chatted for a while about the architecture in edinburgh . such a genuine guy and salt of the earth , your reactions to this man is great to watch please do more

I come from an Irish family on my Dad's side. He was the best at telling hilarious and long winded stories which had us all rolling around on the ground at our many family gatherings.. always with himself as the eejit causing the problem or very descriptive about some near disaster ,lol. Billy so reminds me of those times when I was young and we all entertained one another. I am sure the tradition goes way back with Billy too and has its ancient roots long ago, around fires on long winter nights. Same for many cultures, I am sure, but certainly not all. I love my Welsh family but they are not like this at all. lol. Occasionally a really funny story will surface but my Irish family make a way of life out of it. lol.

What a tale, it had me crying with laughter. Funnily enough I witnessed a woman attempt to get on a bus that had just started to pull away from the stop. She managed to grab the pole but then tripped and fell as she tried to get on. Instead of letting go she hung onto the pole and was dragged along the road, losing her shoes and shopping as she went, before someone got the driver to stop. Shocking at the time but funny later on. She was ok, more embarrassed than hurt.

Billy is the master of story telling. We were all laughing during that but not once did he tell a joke. That's why he's regarded as one of the greats. He can be on stage for 2 hours and have the audience rolling with laughter but never once telling a joke. He just takes a sideways look on things that have happened to him.

There was an incredibly funny revue comedian during my schooldays. His name was Gerard Hoffnung. We used to have a great chat show host many years ago called Michael Parkinson,. His show called simply "Parkinson" ran on prime time Saturday night TV , around about 10PM , for at least 15-20 years. All the big celebs were on it, including just about all the A listers including almost all the Hollywood stars You name them they were on the show, Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergmann, Heston, Pacino, Savalas, Muhammed Ali, and so on. Billy Connolly and Parky, as all Brits knew him, became best friends and Billy was on it something like 14 times if I remember correctly. Certainly more than anyone else. You can see many of his appearances on You Tube. He would have the entire British Isles in stitches with his true stories and everyone would say Billy is on Parky Saturday night and most the nation would make sure they watched. He is a comedy legend and loved by millions of Brits across many decades and indeed generations. His story about when he was in the Territorial Army on exercise is a classic, and his story of what happened in the Glasgow shipyard when the thousands of workers, he being one of them, all left at the same time when the work day ended is to die for.

There are three series that Billy Connolly did of US adventures. Route 66, Tracks Across America and Great American Trail that you might enjoy, all made between 2011 and 2020 but there is also An Audience With Billy Connolly which is from the 80’s (I think) where it’s a mixture of stories told in his stand-up routines and questions from a celebrity packed audience. Billy Connolly Made In Scotland, in which he talks about and shows the parts of Scotland, people and experiences that made him who he is and was made about five years ago. But of course the piece de resistance is Billy Connolly’s World Tour of Scotland which is snippets from his stand-up tour along with tails and history of the town/city that he is performing in, this one is from the early/mid 90’s.
