To be fair to those American fans, Major League Soccer only started in the 1990s whereas those European clubs date from the late 1800s or early 1900s. So American fan culture has only developed to the point that its European equivalent had reached by about the 1930s.
@koroslav
@koroslav 2 жыл бұрын
@@gcullen104 in all fairness I don't think US have the chance to reach this level of ethusiasm. The teams here represent the whole city/district and people from one city hate the other team from the same city. The whole culture is weird mix of love and hate that is too much for the US. Their chants are too clean and allways will be, because sports is business in the first place. Here it is culture, tribe, family... Panathinaikos vs AEK, Citizens vs United, Olympique vs PSG, Bayern vs BVB, Legia vs Lech, Sparta vs Slavia... And then champions league and Europa league and now conference and of course national teams. US just have max 1 decent team per state and each sport has different franchise. Whereas if you are fan of Sparta, you go see hockey, football, futsal, canooing, cycling, basketball, cross country and much more. Different sports one brand same with Panathinaikos and almost all other brands. We share chants and support different sports. In US Boston has Bruins for hockey, Celtics for basketball, Patriots for NFL and Red Sox for baseball. 4 sports 4 brands. Four different color schemes to wear, four types of chants. No unity

European teams are more like armies. In the '70's there were running battles on match days even with some small clubs. It was bloody and it was scary. There were certain fans (I'm thinking of you Millwall) who you avoided like the plague. I am so happy that matches are more family friendly now, you still get racist remarks tossed about but teams are held responsible for their fans and they come down heavily on those who indulge.

As an UNOfficial Ambassador for MILLWALL Football and Athletic Club one really must object in the strongest possible terms Sharon and I am in my SEVENTH decade of attending and visiting 84 grounds while supporting them, from Carlisle down to Plymouth. Up to 1993 when, sadly, we moved to a sanitized, soulless,(relatively) Silent All Seater Stadium (ASS for short) I only missed 6 games at Home in all those decades. also, having been born and raised less than 2 miles from Brixton and Peckham have witnessed the total transformation from the 97% White British South East London to the current miasma where in many areas it is less than 5% White British indigenous and all in one lifetime. The vignettes, tales, and anecdotes I have seen firsthand would have you shaking your head in disbelief and make you think I was exaggerating but I would not be and I have lived with a Jamaican Lady from "Country" for over 20 years...

So you wanted some context... I scrolled down a bit and did not see any such comment with "full context", so here we go: 1. Borussia Dortmund from Germany (This walks on the street are when a team plays away and their fans go with the train to the other cities. They go than accompanied by police usually and try to make their presence as good as possible known. It's the idea of conquering a new city) 2. FC Köln from Germany 3. Eintracht Frankfurt from Germany 4. The national team of Norther Ireland (I saw a comment claiming they would be English fans at the final of Euros and that they sing their own version of freed from desire, a song from Gala. The English part is wrong, but they were singing their own version of the Gala song called "Will Griggs on fire". Will Griggs is one of the Northern Irish player) 5. AC Milan from Italy 6. The national team of France (The game was in Marseille and their stadium you talked about is called Orange Vélodromea. They were singing the national anthem called "La Marseillaise") 7. The national team of Iceland (in the clip you saw, they were doing their "viking clap") 8. Aris Thessaloniki FC from Greece (some of the most intense ultras you can find out there) 9. Eintracht Frankfurt again 10. Ajax Amsterdam from Netherlands, but you reconised them. 11. Malmö FF from Sweden 12. Paris Saint-Germain F.C. from France of course 13. The national team of Romania (singing the national anthem)

I've been following this channel for a while, and I really love the content! Now, for a proper socialogical explanation of why European football is generally gathering a lot more fan support: Football in Europe, is more often than not, a working class sport. You'll see this among most of the ultras fans regardless of the team - their hardcore base is working class, and they are proud of it. In the US however, "working class" is not really a label that most people define themselves as. In the US, everyone seems to be, or want to be, or think they are, middle class, whereas in Europe this is often a pejorative term that you often might not want to be if you are a football fan. This is especially true for the UK, where the term "middle class" equals a wannabe, semi-wealthy and highly educated wanker that sees himself as above the common man - definitely a negative label, as opposed to the US. Football in Europe is in this regard similarly a sport for "the common man", who takes pride in not being told how he should behave, and revels in this by expositing community values of the working class (singing together, often about the streets where they grew up), singing offensive songs (often as a "fuck you" to the refined manners of the middle and upper classes), all with a touch of hypermasculinity which is a value that is more and more being shunned by the middle and upper classes of today. You'll see this as a common denominator across most European football fans, and this working class pride is something the US fans seem to be lacking. The problem here is that most US teams are simple franchises, as it's companies that own a team name and treat the sport like an enterprise that is supposed to make money rather than be a local team and source of pride for the local community. The teams can move from their origin city, which then also cuts any community ties between the club and their fans, that working class people value (if anyone even takes pride in the US of defining themselves as working class these days). Unfortunately, this is why I believe the US football fan culture won't blossom up anytime soon. The whole sport is organized in a different way from the corporate side, and the fans don't see themselves as having that common denominator (working class people united behind their local club around the corner where they grew up).

I'd agree. I'd also add that the fact many European football teams were started in the late 19th/early 20th century by groups of friends as amateur clubs. They competed for the fun of it and just grew and grew an it truly belonged to that community (even if that is no longer factually correct). Its hard to manufacture that passion for a team that was created because a billionaire bought the rights to start a team in a city. It isn't your team and it can be taken away if the owner chooses.

Like you said Dan, it have to start somewhere. And even the shittiest start, at least it's already started. But it takes a long, long way to go massive. Here in Southeast Asia specifically, and Asia generally, we already having quite a crazy scene. Not as hell crazy as Europe, but still something we can be proud of. The ultras and football casuals, or you might called as hooligans culture also big here. You lads can check about this culture in Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand) and Africa as well (Egypt, Morocco) and give your thoughts about it. There's a few good videos, if you can find it. By the way, much fan of your content. Keep it coming, I'm sure gonna watch it. Greetings from Malaysia.

3:35 We can date this game that most people can relate to. The bill board at the back is advertising Xbox 360, and that console was discontinued in April 2016. Assume the game was before that, they're at least 7 years behind Europe. Thankfully they won't have to go through the having football firms to get the chants they want. Although organised football hooliganism is something that still happens with international plays to this day.
@izmershafiq
@izmershafiq 2 жыл бұрын
@@dataterminal I would say maybe around 10 years behind at least. In my country, we're even start to having this kind of culture quite late. We talking about late 80's, early 90's . But it died out very quickly, only to be revived in 2007. Since then, ultras groups and football firms grew. At least there's a beginning to something big, and the US already done it. Just in a matter of time to get a lil a bit more organized, then make crazy s**t happen. Regarding football firms, can't argue much. At least they won't have to go through all the chaos on the streets when it comes to football day innit? While most countries in the rest of the world still struggling to contain the violence. They already have enough violence on their plate, so football day violence aren't much needed I'd reckon.

Hey, I agree. I thought they already had a pretty strong team when România played them in USA World Cup 1994 and they put up quite the fight. Also seeing a lot of movies/tv shows in the past years where their kids play football, even if, sadly, no one seem to show an interested club coach willing to make them billion dollar payed athletes. Yet. You're getting there. There's already an US coach in Europe and some MLS players that play here on contract. And you know what? It's taken ages to make hooligans chill down a bit with their fights against the other team's fans and the riot police. Maybe it's enough with all them stores being broken and the fireworks illegally being sneaked in and thrown at the field. Maybe. Still love it here.

The atmosphere is just completely different in European football but even in that it can ramp up. I got to see Rangers play a friendly game against Tottenham and loved it (especially hearing Blue Sea of Ibrox) but European nights in the Europa League or Champions League are even more intense. You should see the videos from Rangers playing Dortmund at Ibrox last season. The camera shakes for most of it because the entire stadium is bouncing

As a Leeds fan I have to say there are a lot of myths about Liverpool fans being a good crowd, they basically don't sing until they sing You'll never walk alone at the end of a game. Same with Man U, too many plastic fans. I can't say I respect PSG as the club the are, run by blood money, but the fans have always been loyal.

The fans shaking the structure are Frankfurt FC fans... And just if you're interested, 'Ajax' is kinda pronounced more like 'aye-axe.'... The difference between the US & everywhere else, is the fact we are born in to football & it goes down the generations, that's why it matters. I'm a Glasgow Rangers fan, was born one, my Dad is a Rangers fan, he was born one, because his Dad... you know where this is going. It literally goes way back in our families whereas over there, it's a business model mainly, and folk pick a team to support rather than be born in to it.

So, I've told few guys, "hey let's start a chant!" Their answer was "why, our team is losing" so I answered "not for the Yankees, but against the rivals" They didn't even answer me and one of them proceeded to say to his buddy "these mad Europeans with their chants"

If you see where MLS is now from its earliest beginnings which really were embarrassing, then they're poor by comparison to Europe, but several decades behind and playing catch up. BTW, the club with the shaky stadium was Frankfurt. The first three were German: Dortmund, Cologne, Frankfurt, followed by Northern Ireland and then AC Milan (I seem to remember). After that, I lost track...
