Well, that’s fair. As a current music student and soon-to-be band director, I’ve been reflecting a lot on the difference between schools that perform well and those that do not. There’s an entirely different conversation to be had about performance-based learning, and how that affects the preparedness of future musicians (and non-musicians alike), but for those that do pursue rating scales, it really does come down to resources-the big three being: Time, Money, and Staff. All three resources influence how much of the others a program has (ie: more money = more staff = more time). You can have the greatest director in the world, but the fact is that you need a team to get to where Ayala is, or Chino Hills, etc. One person cannot do it alone. You need time, these kids have insane practice regiments and pull up to a crazy amount of competitions. Then the money, which fuels all of the above. You’d be shocked to learn just how much it costs to run a band program, much less one that competes like this. There are fees for things you wouldn’t really consider, like licensing, recording, fees to even compete in the first place, etc… Innate talent is no myth, but it often goes underutilized without the proper funding being dumped into you. And that’s not to diminish the hard work and musicianship these kids are showcasing, it’s just to say that resources, or lack thereof, have a huge influence in the success rate of a program (at least in terms of ratings).

@@neonbeige1289if you want a program like this your main band director basically has to be a nonprofit CEO. You also have to live in an affluent area where families can afford to make massive contributions of both time and money. And if you want your program to be THIS good you have to pay high staff salaries as well as build an awesome band culture at all schools where students play band. And to top it all off you have to work reeaaaaaally reeeeeally hard to be this good.

Yeah my band doesn’t have drums techs or anything and we have 1 set of quints, the rest are old beat up quads. Most of the tubas and other instruments are dented too but we have a great jazz program

I find it interesting when i see other drumlines and you learn how humbling it can be. Ive been in my drumline froup for 6 years(7th-12th grade) and my senior year we got 1st place in every show comp including finals. We had a small group of 13 members including me and we had a show abt "Bees". So it was surprising to see us win against drumlines when we only had very few props and simple costumes. My school district isnt really funded and our highschools arent really funded into any music so many of the drums and instruments have been used the past 10+ years. We apparently have fundraisd enough for new drumheads and harnesses but thats abt it. Rest of the funds are sent through costumes,props,etc. Nonetheless, despite having years of experience through drumline and band(along with church gigs) its interesting to see new ideas with features and new things musically and visually
