Wonderful! Thank you for clarifying how they are different.

This was so helpful. I was very confused as to what actually returning back to the target memory with EMD.

so for those who are experience flooding, is it wise to start with EMD, then progress to EMDr, then EMDR? They way your last slide shows made it seem it like it was the other way around but that doesnt seem logical

Hi Alisha. Thanks for the question - it's a good one. If you are referring to 'flooding' in terms of not being able to stay focused on the target memory, and this is occurring at the onset of reprocessing, I agree - it might be useful to consider beginning with EMD until they are ready to move toward EMDr or EMDR. If you are referring to 'flooding' as an overwhelm of emotions, somatic sensations, etc (and not jumping to other memories), then you might want to use titration practices (remote control, for example) or grounding practices (such as CIPOS) to help keep the client within their window of tolerance. Ultimately, you can move in any direction (EMDR - EMDr - EMD) based on the client's experience and your clinical judgment of how to best keep them on the target memory and away from abreaction. I hope this is helpful. ~kara
