Emerald Dream - Music of WoW Dragonflight: Guardians of the Dream

The Emerald Dream... Like if Val'sharah and Ardenweald had a baby...
I mean, uh, this is the music that plays generally in the Emerald Dream, the new zone added in patch 10.2, Guardians of the Dream. The music that plays in the scorched areas of the zone, with the primalists and the druids of the flame, is going to be in its own video. That video will be for the new raid called Amirdrassil, the Dream's Hope.
First off, I just gotta say how glad I am seeing Leo Kaliski and Russell Brower return. They haven't composed any WoW songs for quite a while and I really did miss the unique styles they brought to the game, especially Russell's style. Hopefully this means we'll get more WoW music from them in the future? Let a guy hope... or dream, even...
Speaking of Leo Kaliski, his themes are consistently my favorite ones from this patch. The melodies are incredibly beautiful and get me feeling quite emotional, he did such an incredible job. "Amirdrassil" and "Rootwoven Sanctuary" are definitely my two favorite themes in the entire patch, they're just so beautiful.
I also like how Jake Lefkowitz is using even more violin in his themes. You can mainly hear it in the "Ancient Bough" and "Viridescent Thicket" themes. Any themes with a big emphasis on violin or cello are pretty much guaranteed to win me over.
EDIT 1: I just read a tweet by Reidor ( / 1715175689651933556 ) that says the music by Russell Brower in this patch is actually old, unused music he composed in the past. In other words, it isn't anything new he composed for this patch, but rather something dug up from before.
To be honest, I did kind of find it odd that he would return to Blizzard so suddenly, especially after announcing that he would be working on the music for Tarisland, so this explanation does make sense. However, I don't really think there's a way to know for sure unless Russell or one of the composers verifies this. I mean, it's nice to think of Russell actually returning and I certainly would love it, but it is rather unlikely all things considered... I don't know, we'll see.

Somewhat sad, but hey, it's not all bad. Always good to hear more music from Russell, especially if it's previously unused stuff like this.

EDIT: Russell Brower confirmed that he is not back at Blizzard and that these new tracks by him are probably unused songs he composed for Blizzard in the past: twitter.com/Russell_Brower/status/1716950910528884916 Yeah, it's kinda sad to hear, but hey, at least we got some more music from Russell that hasn't been heard before so I'll take it! Based off how they sound, I would say these unused themes are most likely from WoTLK or Cataclysm, they have that sort of older Russell Brower style to them. They give me Scholazar Basin/Night Elf vibes, and if they're from Cataclysm especially, then that would make sense since both Cataclysm and this patch have a lot to do with Night Elves. I'm just as surprised as you guys, this is the first new WoW music we've gotten from Russell Brower in forever! He hasn't composed any WoW music since Legion: Shadows of Argus which was all the way back in 2017... For this patch though, he composed two themes, "Barrows of Reverie" (1:57:02) and "Barrows of Flame" (in another video). I wonder if this means we'll get more WoW music from him in the future? Either way, I'm still really glad to see him again. He brought such a unique style to the game and I'm always super appreciative of everything he's contributed over the years. Speaking of returning composers, Leo Kaliski is also composing themes in this patch. He hasn't composed any WoW music since Battle for Azeroth: Rise of Azshara, so it's great to see him again as well. And I gotta say, his themes are consistently my favorite ones in this patch. They're just so incredibly beautiful and emotional, and the melodies are very prominent and memorable. These are my favorite parts in his "Amirdrassil" theme: 1:02, 15:16, 18:33, 19:59 Also here's my favorite parts in his "Rootwoven Sanctuary" theme: 46:45, 56:56, 1:06:24 I also noticed some callbacks to "Song of Elune / Enchanted Forest" in Jake Lefkowitz's theme, "Viridescent Thicket", which can mainly be heard in the strings: 1:39:03, 1:42:49 There's probably more callbacks to older songs in this patch's music, but that's the one that stood out the most to me.

Rootwoven Sanctuary also has motifs of the Temple of the Moon TBC track like 55:58 (the Suramar theme (moons rising or whatever) also had those, although with a much stronger accent on it) And the piano at 1:15:04 throwbacks to Argus, or at least just similar.

After making some research, It is safe to assume that this is contract work, because he will be a composer for the upcoming MMO Tarisland. Which he would not be able to do if he was a full time Blizzard employee. The fact that he is doing contract work for Blizzard is surprising enough!

It's so nice to here Russell working on wow music again, no disrespect meant to the other folks working on the music but for me the music has lost something since he left *especially the main themes, df is pretty decent but even it is beginning to grate on me at this point, which never seemed to happen until bfa, could listen to the vanilla-lwgion themes over and over and not get tired of them

I agree completely. Under Russell Brower each Expansion had a large collection of unique leitmotifs for each zone and new culture. It brought the world to life. Shadowlands had some beautiful music, but there weren’t near as many leitmotifs per zone. Revendreth’s was dull, and I don’t remember Maldraxxus even having a unique theme.

Love that they did so much music again for the .2 patch, like in 9.2, and it's all high quality stuff as well. Really liking these tracks. Love these bouncy strings in the Eye of Ysera tracks at 23:59, 39:02, 42:26, reminds me of the Kul Tiran Allied tracks Leo did in 8.1.5. Really liking the melodies in the Amirdrassil track aswell. Love the more ambient tracks like 5:00, 1:03:23 and Russell's track at 1:57:03, the choir sounds so otherwordly, Russell always used choir really well, really cool to hear him again. Also the change here 1:11:12 to this somewhat ominous vibe by Glenn is really cool, love how it sounds. Love the strings in Jake's tracks, always loved the Teldrassil strings that are also referenced here 1:42:50, also really like the harp at the start of this 1:26:40 and the woodwind at 1:27:47. Really excited to see Leo and Russell back, pretty surprised honestly, especially with Russell, considering he was pretty adamant about not wanting to work with Blizzard anymore after the scandal, if i remember right. I wonder if Metzen had something to do with it, probably did, just gotta call up Edo next. Also saw that Leo had changed his Twitter bio, and it now says "Lead Composer on World of Warcraft". Did we even have a "Lead Composer" after Russell left? Because i remember that being his title, but don't think it ever transitioned to anyone else afterwards. Well, based on his work on this patch, gotta say i'm excited to hear more.

I can't help but think of Ori and the Blind Forest soundtrack when listening to some of these tracks. I suppose it was vastly influential in the "enchanted fantasy forest" style of music. At least within the gaming industry. Emerald Dream is building up to be an incredible zone to experience in its own right.

Sorry for not writing a more coherent comment for now but...Brower is BACK??!!! How?! His departure seemed pretty definitive, no? I wonder what happened to change his mind. Hopefully now with the Microsoft acquisition, the work and talent of the employees will be more valued and respected. Anyway, I'm glad some composers are coming back, adding more diversity in the music. Very good news.

this is probably going to be the most beautiful visuals since dragonflight and besides the last time we were here it was to kill xavios looks kinda psychedelic too the reds orange gold yellow blue the colors the eb, flow and pure some quite tropical colors too and some of the spectacular visuals and ambience in there and man if you got a druid a rogue some melee and mostly casters looks like good size zone too so no one should feel boxed in from what i saw with the walkthrough videos damn looks cool and bad ass to me can't wait to preorder im sure it'll be worth what im going to pay for it and I am saying that we have never got to experience the emerald dream not like this as far as the story goes it was another dimension right and if it was a model for azeroth i can certainly see wild themes like ohnaran plains the eastern kingdoms or kalimdor it doesn't matter i bet it looks very cool with vr i bet huh?

I thought the music was nice, but didn't fit the zone. It felt like it wasn't created for the zone. Russell is so intensely talented to find out after the fact these were not created for this specific zone only speaks to his deftness to detail and innate connection with building music with artwork in mind. It's still good music, and still sad he won't be back.
