That's so good we can use overdischarge protection as on/off swith in that simple way. Overdischarge protection is not needed at all because diode powered from 2,5V source will not light much or will be turned off.

Roughly watts should be double of your battery capacity provided solar panel receives good sunlight for 7/8 hours in a day. Example 2000 Mah battery (2ah) , solar panel should be minimum of 4 watts.
