The midwives, nurses and doctors on the labour ward do an incredible job under immense pressure and often very difficult circumstances. In this video I am proud to take you onto the labour ward that I used to work as a doctor, alongside senior obstetric registrar Dr Lola Brown. We share with you some of the stories and experiences we had working there and give you an insight into what an emergency c-section is really like. We also catch up with one of the doctors on the ward and find out what the pressures of covid-19 have done to the mental health of the labour ward staff. I hope you enjoy this video, remember to subscribe if you would like to see more content like this 👇
Comment below any of your thoughts and also support for the incredible midwives and staff that work on maternity units across the UK.

Nice vid,. I didn t know that you are a tv-doctor with more than 1,4 million followers. i become a little bit shy right now. I saw that at instagram. Give the other doctor a hug from me. She is so nice and positive. Lots of kisses for you, your girlfriend and the other doctor. Oh, whole Holland will gonna follow you. You will become Dr. Phil in a younger version. No, you are a lot nicer. I have a new chromebook and i ll cannot find the hearts, but xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I really appreciate the verbiage you used when referring to people’s birth experiences. “Born through the abdominal wall rather than vaginally” etc. A lot of people say “normal” birth and stuff and as someone who just can’t get babies out hahaha it’s very validating

I had an emergency csection and was blown away by how many people it involved. Even though there was alot going on, I found my surgery incredibly peaceful and managed to do my hypnobirthing breathing throughout. Hypnobirthing is definitely not just for "textbook" vaginal births. My baby swallowed some meconium so I was so grateful that the baby resuscitation was there in the room as I never had to take my eyes off her. I'm so grateful for the NHS ❤

Lola's great. Exactly who you'd want to be looking after you on labour ward when having a baby. Calm under pressure and reassuring so puts confidence into the patient. Great video would like more of these in different departments.

After having a wonderful induced labour (thanks to my amazing midwife coaching me) and delivery my 9 LB 9 son I had a severe haemorrhage and was rushed to theatre I will never forget that experience the doctors, midwifes and anaesthesiologist were fantastic! Without them I would not get to see my daughter and son grow up! So thankful to all NHS staff that work on the delivery suite 💖 My room was full the second the midwife pulled that emergency button, just incredible ☺️

Thank you so much Dr. Alex. I’ve just met my midwives for the first time and never seen a labour ward with family or myself before. I’ve started to think about my birth plan and bit of a control freak about wanting to know everything that goes into delivery. This video has been a reassuring video and incredibly insightful. Thank you very much.

This was so interesting and brought back memories of when I had my son when lola spoke about team work and all hands on deck when someone has to go to theatre. My sons heart beat had dropped as the cord had wrapped around his neck twice so he had to come out fast. I was rushed into theatre and if he wasn't born when he was I would have had an emergency c-section. The staff were amazing and I'll never forget them 👏💙

I had a cat 1 emergency c section in December because my baby’s heart rate crashed and honestly it was the most terrifying few minutes of my life. Hi Dr Alex another fab video I truly love listening to your stories about A&E my Gran used was a nurse and in her later years went into the mental health side of nursing . She was such a sweet kind thoughtful person whom I miss very much,I would often go and spend time at Grans and read her medical books I loved it. You have to be a very special person to care for people and I feel that shows through in every video you make ,such heartfelt dedication. You are an amazing dr and only hope that if and when I need some medical attention I get a dr just as dedicated as yourself . Take care and stay safe we really do sincerely appreciate what you are doing for everyone

Had 2 complicated labours/births the most recent of which was only 2 weeks ago! I’ve had a haemorrhage, two 3rd degree tears and my first baby needed 2 minutes of resuscitation and second baby had a knot in her cord and was round her neck twice! As traumatic as they were the staff are incredible and it brings back quite fond memories looking around a labour ward 💓 thank you NHS staff!

Really good to see this side. Maternity units are incredible. I had to have a cat2 section after failing to progress and my sons head being stuck. Aww great video Alex! Midwives are on another level of compassion! Perinatal teams are so vital with mothers suffering mental health disorders and really help. My daughter had a cat 1 called 9 months ago for my grandson and in the end there wasn't time for c-sec (details withheld) but the room filled up with specialists within seconds literally and baby and mum were saved with other emergency intervention. Amazing to experience albeit terrifying but the firm yet kind, gentle tone of voices kept the whole incident calm. Kudos to the mum and baby people! 👏👏👏❤

Love this! I'm due my first baby in August and I'm high risk so will be on consultant led unit with an increased risk of needing a C-section. This was so useful. Also I'm really pleased that the midwives have encouraged people to go in for monitoring if they notice a change in movements. I've been in already for this once and I felt absolutely completely safe and looked after.

I find it all fascinating. I started at the birthing centre and got blue lighted to hospital as my little one had shoulder dystocia and was back to back; the surgical team were amazing, and I actually enjoyed it even though ended up having forceps and a PPH. Me and baby were very well looked after and it was an incredible experience- looking back it's scary maybe but in reality at the time I loved every moment (and I was terrified of giving birth). Thanks NHS 💙

Ive never been soo terrfied in my life. For my second son I had a planned c section year half ago but it was brought forward because my son stopped growing. It was completely different, very calm, music I knew what was going on. It was my best experience and grateful for the nhs for for the birth of my sons. My only criticism is off midwives outside of hospital who you see for apointments throughout your whole pregnancy they say zero about c-sections. I went to a birthing class with my first son and they never spoke about c-sections as if they dont happen!! So midwives really need to explain about c sections to first time mums and not just talk about straight forward natural births without complications.

Could you do a video on the best advice on becoming a doctor and how you got to where you are? Xx since lockdown I’ve been left in the dark on medical school etc.

This video was so insightful, Alex! So excited for OB rotation when I hit my clinicals! My thoughts are with families who are currently pregnant, pregnancy alone is stressful let alone during a pandemic but it’s healthcare heroes like you guys who help to decrease a bit of the anxiety :)

Thanks again for another great informative video Alex, much appreciated. I had a natural birth and actually didn't have the first clue about the different C-sections you could have until I saw this! However I did have around 100 stitches after being cut and fell down the stairs a few days later on my bottom holding baby and went down the full flight, wasn't the most fun experience I've ever had, wouldn't recommend it haha! x

I just wanted to say how grateful I am for all the work you do in labour ward to all the doctors and midwives. Without you my little boy wouldn't be here so I am forever grateful to you all especially in these hard times. My little boy is 11 weeks now and doing really well.

I had my emergency csection at that hospital. Highly doubt it but if I do have another baby I will not be going there again. my whole experience was extremely traumatic and no one took me seriously as I was discharged and re-admitted on numerous occasions even though I was a high risk pregnancy. My baby was a IUGR baby, I also had preeclampsia then contracted sepsis whilst on the antenatal ward resulting in me having my baby prematurely. I was also given the wrong medication that put me at risk of placenta abruption. However due to my experience it has motivated me to do a midwifery course as I want to give ladies the best experience possible. I wouldn’t want anyone to go through what I did.

Very interesting. Must be Hard for most at this moment in time. This video made the ward look very calm. May i Just say i seen my nephew Arriving in 2 this World. I drove my sis 2 hosp her contractions came on fast we made it to the wing Just in time. The midwife went to get her notes. My sis then Just laid down pants off i said omg Theres a bubble coming out I pressed the Red button. Then he was out like a fish my sis was in shock then the midwife came back n said omg pressed her alarm give me the baby. My legs went weak i couldnt speak. The team were now all doing there bit a round my sis Who was shaking shivering. I turned round seen the scales Placed my nephew down n left It happened that fast i think every one was in shock.. Hope you dnt mind me sharing my story. So keep up the great work # keep strong #keep safe # keep smiling. Thank you so much., 💪😷😊❤

I had a catergory 1 c section last April due to a placental abruption sadly it was too late for my baby she was born at 39 weeks but only lived for one day! It’s so scary as had two normal Pregnancies prior and no signs this was going to happen. Only 26 too! Staff who did the section were incredible x
