What I really love about Claire is that we aren’t prompted to subscribe or like. I like also that there is almost no information on her anywhere. She both entertains and informs in the most effective and delightful manner. Do we need more? Not for me. I am happy to watch her in the wild whilst l, a septuagenarian, sip my cocoa in front of my wood burner and reflect on the tame adventures I have had so far in my life. Keep going! When I was in the Army I once thought I was clever and decided to make my kit smaller and lighter by leaving my doss bag and only taking my British Army issued Bivvy bag. I spent the night on a mud track in Salisbury Plain with no sleeping mat, no doss bag, and I wore my norwegian fleece, a Sofite jacket and usual combats. I can tell you that was the coldest night of my life and I didn't get even a wink of sleep. Horrendous!!! Always make sure you have ground insualtion, at least a silver blanket at the minimum because the difference it makes is unbelievable!!! Love your videos especially the tarp ones. Silver reflective materials do almost nothing when they are pressed up against another solid material, whether that is a sleeping bag, human skin, the ground, etc. IR reflecors, also often called "radiant barrier", need a signficant air gap between the surface of the reflector and the heat source to work. You need at minimum around .75" air gap. Meanwhile, it provide almost no thermal conductive insulation. Hence sleeping on top of a mylar space blanket or the like is pretty pointless. Having it suspended above you is a much better idea. Lining a tarp or tent with it is a good idea in more extreme cold conditions.

@@THEGREATRAYMONDOOUTDOORS I agree with you that under insulation is a must have, but physics is physics--a mylar space blanket or the like doesn't provide any significant insulation when pressed between the ground and a body. It will reflect IR back only in the areas where the body is not touching or close to it. There have been studies done on this and this is a well known phenomenon in physics and science. We humans are amazingly subjective beings. This is why science and the scientific process is important. But science aside, I've had my own direct experiences and observations with this phenomenon. For example, a buddy and I did a hike in the White Mountains. I brought a foam mat to sleep on, and he thought he would save weight and bulk by sleeping only on a space blanket (and within his sleeping bag). Despite that it was summer, and lows only got into the 60's and high 50's, he was miserable, and freezed despite having a sleeping bag good for those temps, and didn't understand why. Me, even with my relatively thin foam mat was fine. Foam is an excellent thermal insulator due to its very low thermal conductivity and since it resists compression unlike sleeping bag insulation. IR reflection and thermal conduction are two different animals and work on different principles. But, he didn't even have IR reflecting going on because the surface of most of his space blanket was touching or very close to sleeping bag. In other words, there wasn't a way for it to reflect the IR back to him. Links tend to get a YT post flagged/blocked, But you should look into the science of IR and reflection of same more. Back in the 80’s when Goretex arrived I bought a Goretex bivvi bag. Best investment ever, I was in the army at the time and used it in every kind of weather. Good video.

As a mountaineer, I've spent many a nite in a bivy sack. Certainly an aquired taste for many. However it is so good of you to try this experiment, so you know you have the option you can trust. Over 30yrs ago when i used to do a lot of hiking/hill walking, I never took a tent , just used a sleeping bag in an plastic survival bag. No hood so used my backpack, propped up on a few sticks, as a shelter for my head. No posh sleep mats, just slept on the ground. Never felt cold even when the bag was covered in frost and ice of a morning.

10 times out of 10 if you sleep in your Bivi bag like that your sleeping bag will be damp and wet the next day, it is because of condensation from your body warmth. I learnt that very quickly when I was in the New Zealand Army. What we used to do is sleep on top of the Bivi to stop the condensation you could probably do that 2 nights tops before your sleeping bag would be wet right through, but the aim was to see if you could sleep in it overnight and you achieved that successfully. Great videos I enjoy watching them.

I've slept out in a bivvy bag in Scotland, Norway, Dartmoor and Spain - never took a tent. You just dont expect to wake up completely dry, even with Goretex, bc you sweat and breathe out a pint of moisture in the night. They are great if you adjust your comfortometer. "The Book of the Bivvy" by Ronald Turnbull is an outdoors classic, and has the whole story.

Heyy yes they are great aren't they :) I think it was a little rain water that had come through though, I use a bivi bag all the time and have never really had any condensation issues. @@WildBeare Hey, I'm amazed you've never had condensation. The ambient humidity and air flow due to wind makes a huge difference to breathable fabrics tho. Biggest advantage of the bivvy is the STARS when you wake up for minute or two in the night... Merry X!

A friend of mine used to travel to countries on last minute flights, take a rucksack and bivy bag and do a two/three day super cheap visit. Sleep in the undergrowth etc. On a visit to Norway he woke in the early hours, in shrubs at the airport and could hear scratching on his bivy bag. Terrified it might be a bear he kept silent until he realised it was his eyelashes scraping on the inside of his bivy 🤣

It's best NOT to drink anything several hours before getting into a bivy. Also, place a thin fleece blanket between the bivy and the sleeping bag. This will not only soak up some of that condensation but create draft space.

A good tip, one we used in the army, is to always have a couple of bin bags with you, that way you can put your rucksack and boots inside to keep as dry as possible. Also unless it'slashing down always have the zip slightly open to help with the condensation. Great video, takes me back to days on exercise and none green machine bivy adventures in later life.

I easily have a couple hundred nights in my US army Gore-Tex bivy sack, summer and winter, both in and out of service. You will not get wet from external moisture in that thing, unless you pick a bad spot and end up in water over the zipper. Its main drawbacks are that it is HEAVY - close to 2kg/4lb- and only packs down to about the size of a Ridge Rest pad. Of course, that’s pretty light and small for something that’ll take anything short of a direct hit from an artillery shell.

Great video, Ms. Beare! Good on you for braving the cold and wet. Some of the moisture inside the bivi may have been condensation, not rain leaking in. "Breathable" fabrics don't always work as advertised in really wet conditions. Last Spring I camped on a cold night when the ground was very damp from rain the day before. In the morning, there was some dampness on the inner surface of my bivi and the outer surface of the quilt. Not much, thankfully; I was able to dry the quilt by hanging it up for a couple of hours to air out. I think this sort of thing is unavoidable when the air is both cold and damp, because the temperature falls below the dew point inside the bivi.

Was thinking that myself as well about the condensation. Just exhaling inside a bivy bag introduces enough warm moist air to cause condensation. And of course water always flows to the lowest point which would account for the foot of the sleeping bag being so damp.

It's not completely unavoidable. There are two ways to deal with this. Either have a more breathable, but less waterpoof bag and wear only very hydrophobic and quick drying insulation inside (i.e. a lot of polypropylene and/or some polyester). Or much more conveniently, throw something like woven or non woven polypropylene fabric over the top of the bivy bag. This will do two thing simultaneously. It will increase the waterproofness of the bivy bag on the top, and it will move the condensation area to the outside of the bivy bag i.e. outer part of the surface rather than the inner. You can use other materials besides polypropylene, like DWR treated polyester or the like, but polypropylene is my fabric of choice because it is very lightweight (less dense than even nylon), has lower thermal conduction than any other textile material we commonly use, and it is so naturally hydrophobic that it doesn't need a DWR coating to repel water--it is built in to the fabric/material itself--keep it clean and it will always repel water. Conversely, most factory applied DWR coatings wear off fairly quickly. The downside to polypropylene is that it is very hard to find the woven fabric by the yard and the woven form is MUCH more durable and strong than the nonwoven forms (which is much easier to find). One way around this is to buy a couple XXL (or larger if you can find them) polypropylene men's baselayer shirts. You can cut out large pieces of the shirt and sew them together making a mini blanket out of it.

Heyy, thanks :) well, I use bivi bags all the time (including this one) and I've never really had any bother with condensation even when the bivi is getting rained on or in a puddle haha (I am a cold sleeper and dont sweat at night, not sure if thats why.. not much moisture to condensate maybe), so I think most of this wetness was a little rainwater that had come through. I realise condensation can be an issue though and can be unavoidable. I've heard of some having real issues with it in bivi bags. I carried a bivy bag on all my climbing trips and long day hikes. I consider them to be great insurance just in case you need something. I have 3 different types, a traditional bag, a very light reusable bag and a mylar single use one . I never had to spend a night in one but I did camp out in the traditional bag a couple times just to see if I liked it. I have to say they are not fun to sleep in. I found them very confining and tight. I much prefer a tent. But I have known people who got lost hiking in the dark and ended up spending a very miserable cold night in the forest with no shelter at all. It's always best to be prepared.

Thanks for the video. I always enjoy them. Most people use a bivy bag under a poncho, tarp, or other cover. You should use a breathable bag because condensation alone will soak your bag. The bag you have is huge for a bivy. For the same size, you could have gotten a Snugpak Stratosphere that has hoops over the head end and mosquito netting. You would have slept as well as being in a tent. In the winter time, I usually use a Survive Outdoors Longer Escape bivy in the cold, but it's always in my bag. It's breathable, quiet, and rolls up small ta I ng up minimal space. Best of all, it's inexpensive. Typically, they last me about 2-3 years. Toss that with a space blanket, some cordage, and you have an emergency shelter system that fits in your pocket.

When I was in the Australian Army I lived in a goretex bivvy bag in the bush. When it wasn't practical to set up a hootchi (basha) I found it to be a lifesaver! Love your videos!

The bivi-only setup might be a bit rough for me, but it seems that a very tiny (2m x 2m) tarp in a plowpoint pulled up to that limb could have made for a very comfy camp, with the bivi and inflatable pad keeping your feet dry while the mini-tarp sheltered your head, even while cooking in the rain.

I love biviing so much that I very rarely use my tents anymore (in this country!). With or without a tarp for extra shelter, both my bivis have seen me through loads of nights out in the last few decades. Such a sense of freedom sleeping out under the stars in any weather (yes, including snow. I’ve used one inside the Arctic circle, sleeping in a ‘snow grave’). I hope you learn to love it too! Army gortex bags work best , ive tried those bivi bags with a laminated finish and they're just sweat bags.having said that gortex doesn't work when its wet. You do need good ventilation where you are breathing.

The science of vapor barriers inside the sleeping bag eliminates the moisture problem inside the bivi. I use a survival Mylar type bag inside the sleeping bag then bivi over it. The benefit is you can double the temp rating on your sleeping bag saving weight with a smaller bag. Which you would then use to have a change into spare dry base layer in the morning. In cold weather it’s not as clammy humid as you think.

Bivy bags can add up to 20f to your sleep system rating! They are great in cold weather, especially snow. They are uncomfortable in warm weather 😉

Yes I know it is possible but you need to have a small to medium tarp with you. The tarp helps keep you and the bivy dry and the tarp can easily be held down much better than a tent. Ask me how I know. Great Job Wildbeare

Claire I'm so happy you did this with a quick escape planned. I always do that with new gear that I want to test out. The biggest benefit is that you will be more confident when you go out from now on, since you know you will be fine with just the bivy. As for your hat being damp, that's to be expected. Waterproof bivvies don't have much air flow and you will get condensation around your head just from breathing.

It's possible that the moisture inside the bivi is due to a bit of evaporated perspiration and condensation from your breath. I suspect that if it had really been leaking, you'd have been floating inside it.

I don't think so, I was breathing out of the bag. Also I've used bivi bags many times and only ever had very minor condensation issues. These bags are designed to be 'breathable' to reduce condensation so I guess if they are in rain all night they might let a little water through. I think the Hunka bivis are more waterproof, but they're heavier. They also don't have the big hood or zip so water would just come in through the entrance Thanks for watching :) Claire

Unfortunately, most people have a very poor understanding of Gortex. And marketing has totally fooled them with the term "breathable". No such thing as a fabric that is breathable and waterproof and certainly NO fabric that expels water only in one direction. That goes against the law of thermodynamics. Moisture flows from higher moisture to less moisture. The side that is wetter (more water pressure) will push water to the side that is drier. Make a bag out of Gortex and fill it with water. Water will slowly flow from the inside to the outside. That bag will NOT have water flow from the outside to the inside. A bivy will not expel mositure from the inside to the outside where it is far wetter. And even if the inside of the bag is wetter, the flow rate is VERY slow. Hence, condensation. But don't bother to argue the point too much. People will believe what they want.

Vulnerable? Why do people always say that? I always have people saying don't you get lonely or what if someone attacks you? There is no one hiding in the cold in the dark in the pissing rain hoping & waiting for someone to come along so they can attack them, you would be worse off outside a kebab shop on a Friday night. You got to live your life & that means having no fear. Peace..

Haha 'a beautiful time in a bag in the rain'! Love it. Most bivvy bags I've used have a had a bit of condensation in by morning. No such thing as 100% waterproof AND breathable but for the odd night and emergencies thay defo have their place. Atb for 2023, Andy

Snugpak do a decent bivvy bag 👌🏻, I've done plenty of nights like that and it's great to see the stars like that. My best ever bivvy experience was waking up and being surrounded by six foxes all just sitting about looking at me drinking tea!

That's a brilliant story! Wow! Closest I've come to that was when me and my gf were kept company by a nearby fox making warning sounds half the night. We didn't mind. We were the intruders. It felt like an honour, anyway, to have the fox around our bivvy bags.

Water sealing it at home before leaving would likely make it even more durable in harsh conditions, This did great even without sealing it for twelve hours which is fantastic! In the South East united states I would avoid being near water in the rain at all bc flooding is very prominent. BUT! This was a really informative and a great way to test and show that even if you hadn't prepared and were near a water source or simply had to that The bivi could potentially save your life. Great Job, makes me want to get one, lol I love that you apologize to your gear too 😆.

Weight and comfort are everything for me. I've had waaaay too many injuries because I used to have a pretty fucking dangerous job (both legs have been severely broken, and my back) so I really struggle with tents. Hammock was my go to this summer, but recently done a camp in the peaks with my bivy and loved it. The versatility is superior to anything else and most of the moisture came from me breathing, rather than the rain. Great kip.

Great video! I'd be surprised if the Alpkit Kloke was actually leaking, though, but that amount of moisture could be a mix of condensation and rain throught the hood opening. Even one person's moisture output feels like a lot when it's trapped in a bivvy and soaked into the outside of the sleeping bag, especially if you've been breathing into it. A lightweight poncho is really handy for getting in and out of a bivvy bag in rain.
