Love this video! My elderly mother and I were the only house with power in our neighborhood during last year’s winter storm. My sister who lives in Kyle, TX was without electricity or heat for almost a week. So was another sister who lives less than 20 miles away… My daughter’s childhood friend’s Mother was found dead in her Austin, TX home. A lot of us have no clue how to survive disasters.

If you have a gas stove with electric starter you can also like that with the match. Please pass that around because a lot of people don’t know that. I lived in Michigan through many storms.
@homesteadgal4143
@homesteadgal4143 9 ай бұрын
@@lillianelliott1868 Keep in mind that is only for the stove top. The gas/propane stovetop will work with a match but the oven will not work. Ovens require the regulated temperature and that means the gas/propane goes on & off to hold the desired oven temperature. This will not work using an electric igniter. Best deal is to have a battery-powered igniter if you have a gas/propane stove/oven (that's what we have).
@jennyeagan1840
@jennyeagan1840 8 ай бұрын
@@lillianelliott1868No no No no! This can be dangerous. My apartment complex forbids this. We are all hooked up to each other's gas lines along with the neighborhood gas lines that run through our connecting complex. And, there is no electric on to work the stovetop vents. Just wait it out. Boil water in a tea kettle ahead of an incoming storm, or a ten quart pan, take some for water bottles. Insulate water bottles, tea kettle and the 10quart when done with things like insulated curtains, quilted blankets. Same for slow cookers.

I live in South Florida; hurricane preparedness is vital. I will not use propane or charcoal (family member accident) For years I have used the sterno cooking fuel - fast,can be used indoors, reusable. With power out for nearly 2 weeks, hot coffee, decent meals every day while our neighbors ran out of propane & charcoal. We had run out of bread,no convenience of a store. Had a box of bread mix - took pavers from the garden & cookie rack to make an oven. Placed 2 stereo on bottom & just let bread bake Nothing like fresh homemade bread, peanut and jelly with hot soup!

First I LOVE the kitty dish! Just wanted to add a few suggestions. We went through Sandy in NJ 2012, I cooked up every piece of meat 4 days out when the suggestion of the storm hitting us came over the airwaves. I then refroze all the meaty meals in aluminum pans in the deep freezer. Of course we lost power for 9days and trees were down all around us we were basically trapped in our home! We reheated the meals in sterno racks or on the grill and ate very well over the course of the disaster. Our deep freezer held up very well and kept everything nice and cold. I did check the temp of food before warming it up just in case. I almost threw out my mother’s fondue pot but thought it would be awesome for soup! You have excellent ideas! Thank you for sharing.

When I was younger living in CT, we had power outages all the time. My parents use to break out the Colman camp stove to cook. It worked perfectly. It's always good to have one of these on hand for such occasions. Later years, we also had a kerosene heater for the colder months, which did the job. Kerosene is more expensive than it use to be but it is good for emergencies especially if you don't have a generator or a woodstove. It's also good to have a carbon monoxide monitor while running a kerosene heater. It does smell when you first start it up and then the odor goes away.

Such GREAT ideas!! Everything looked great! Thanks for these AWESOME tips!! I do have one that I'd like to share, Powdered Skim Milk, I use it every morning for my cereal, no worrying about refrigeration! It's also great for soups, and Mac and Cheese! Lol ... Yes, I have a supply of powdered milk as well. If the grid goes down during the warmer months, the refrigerated milk won't last long. Also, I keep powdered milk on hand for the grandkids and neighbors with little ones.

Hi there 9thE. I'm on the same page. 😊👍 I even have the same foods prepped. These methods work, I've used them during outages. I used a smaller pot with lid to boil water. I also used a smaller stainless steel fry pan, and was able to sear a small steak- it got very hot. You could easily do hot dogs or burgers imo. Very easy to heat any canned goods. I set mine up on my stove on a metal baking sheet for extra safety. I also purchased a camping mess kit in case. Looking at a Haines solar oven too. Cheers! ✌

Hello BI, thank you for your note. I agree about the smaller, thinner walled pots and pans, and yes they do work. In an attempt to keep things simple and food safe, I went with fast cooking foods and cooked meat. I would hate for anyone to fail at cooking meat, and then get sick. I am going to look up the Haines Solar oven as well. See you again soon and welcome to the channel. Cheers!

Oats don’t really need to be cooked. Overnight oats are great. If you want them warm, add warmed milk to the bowl.

I put my oats with liquid (water, almond milk, or whatever) and my add-ins (like raisins, cocoa nibs, berries, or nuts) in a mason jar and let it stand on the counter overnight. By morning, the oats are soft, the fruit is plump, and I can add in warm water or milk if I want to. Really, it doesn’t need to be cooked.

Hi Dora, this is an awesome question. I went to an Off-Grid Internship in 1998. One of the ways we cooked food was with a Hay Box. They are pretty simple to make and they do work. The Wonderbag is a cute modern version of the old school one. Thank you for asking me this question, I am going to check out the Wonderbag. Cheers!
