I think the blown front tire happened on takeoff and they were holding the nose in the air for as long as possible on landing, slowing the aircraft with the brakes as much as possible before setting the nose down.

As a kid, I used to go to the Air Force Museum in Fairborn, Ohio on Wright Patterson Air Force Base. They had one of these, they only made two, parked out front for years. 15 years ago, or so, they pulled it over to a maintenance hangar, and rebuilt it. Now, it is the prize display in their new "Experimental" Aircraft Hangar. If you've never been, it is well worth the visit, and free. It would take a couple days to go through and see everything. It has one of the first IMAX theaters, too.

I used to love that museum! My family would travel from Cleveland to Cincinnati to visit my Mom's sister every summer and would visit the museum during the trip back in the 1960's. After earning my Private Pilot License in 1969 I took the High Altitude course at Wright Patterson AFB. When the Stewardess briefs the use of oxygen when the mask pops out of the overhead, you immediate response is to secure your own mask before tending to your spouse or children. Hypoxia can make you useless in approx 15-30 seconds.

We had a B-52 do this at Castle AFB in November of 1983. Anti-lock failed, tires blew, and it threw chunks of burning magnesium wheels up into the wing tanks. Fortunately, the crew got out and clear before it blew. Still had 50,000 pounds of JP4 on board. Heck of a fireball and it was heard 30 miles away.
