EMERGENCY LANDING F-15 FIGHTER PILOT SKILLS NO HUD DISPLAYS WITH SUPERVISING F-15E • RAF LAKENHEATH

We see so many practice low approaches and circuits, sometimes they come in pairs too. We get asked many times why do they practice low approaches and touch and goes. The answer really is “so that they are the best at what they do” and when the time comes for an emergency in the real world, the training kicks in for a fighter pilot, and it is all second nature reactions to them.
An F-15E Strike Eagle at RAF Lakenheath has reported the HUD displays have all gone blank and has lost all displays. A supervising F-15 is paired up with the emergency aircraft to assist it with the landing. We see this manoeuvre many times as a practice, but this one was the real thing. No dramas, no issues, lives saved, no loss.

Oiii oiii Ladies, gents and teddy bears So when we see them carry out lots of low approaches whether a singleton or as a pair, this is the reasons why; because one day, training will kick in when the time comes to use it in a real world emergency. As a former USAF Air Traffic Controller -- 1) second a/c needs to identify possible crash site for air/sea rescue 2) practice emergency landings because after flame out glide ratio is 7 : 1 GOD KEEP ALL OUR WONDERFUL PILOTS SAFE !

As a former fighter pilot I would be horrified with being followed by emergency crews for an inop HUD. IT HAD TO BE SOMETHING ELSE.

I bet any amount of money the pilot could have landed on his own at a push. the buddy system is probably protocol for more of an emergency but used anyway.

Why the emergency for no HUD? You still have all the Instruments in front of you. Must have been something other then a heads up display.

When displays start disappearing, there could be other issues, so best to RTB for safety reasons. Emergency landing procedure is part of the process
