I've seen some of those lifeboats be released from the ship on sliders. They slide bow first into the water from high up the ship and everything happens very quickly and probably with very little moving parts. It is just release and go into a big splash.

The reason I searched this today..is I was a huge ferry today and just stood in front of these safety boats and looked at all the mechanical structure, tie downs. cables. steel braces, pulleys...safety pins, and on and on and on..and said...htf will this thing get detached if ever it needs to...

Somebody got fired that day. There's supposed to be a another line tied to the life boat center bottom where that small eyelet is located so it doesn't swing out of control. It's the same line Somebody thought was supposed to be detached to release the boat instead of just loosening up to start the procedure.

Clearly it's a test or a drill. It's fairly obvious that the lifeboat is intended to drop from that position in case of an actual emergency. As far as being seaworthy, once that hatch is closed that boat is 100% sealed watertight. Upside down, right side up, doesn't matter.

And if the ship is listing the lifeboat will never be against the side of the ship. Kick the auto inflatable rafts over. Water hits lick will auto inflate. Jump with life jacket on and arms wrapped securely around it so it doesn’t break your neck

Should have closed the hatch. In emergency you have to have it right or you'll have 500 gallons of water sloshing in it an making it hard to steer. Especially in high waves.
