Back in the day, a new grad had to do Med-Surg first for 2 years before even considering ER or ICU...This was the best way to develop critical thinking skills, learn time managment, have exposure to many diagnoses and their treatments, learn how to really chart well, develop team thinking, etc..Now, I see new grads in ICU, ER and step downs that still require a good amount of nursing experience, and they are struggling..Every now and again, you come across a rock star, who is just super smart, and adapts very well in any environment, but 99.9% of new grads need to develop first and gain experience prior to going to these areas, where the patient needs to be stabilized...
