When it comes to high end bags you’re literally paying for the name that’s all. Good quality hardware and leather on bags aren’t cheap of course but they’re not worth thousands of dollars…

I used to work with the brand (left this year), and part of what you said is true. Honestly the YSL brand LOVES having Customers have the accessibility to purchase from the boutique and authorized wholesalers. You would surprised at how many people prefer the experience shopping outside of the boutiques. But here’s the real tea, YSL is going through a rebrand and for a lot of people it’s going to be a very different shopping experience within brand/boutiques. Kering made a lot of plans to expand the heavy hitters due to the success of Covid. BUT this year there were a lot of issues with the brand only making the products people wanted available only to the wholesale. Pair that with the slow down in traffic post covid. That caused a lot of confusion for customers and the boutiques suffered for not having “hot and desirable” products people wanted. ALONG with the conflicting information with the distribution of products. This way the brand can keep money in house, so they make the money back for the rebrand and have an overall “true luxury” experience. (And also no sales lol -they will still have the outlets)

I completely agree . I love the idea / aesthetic about that YSL is supposed to be . However in real life the quality of the products just is not there . From my bags to small leather goods , they just don’t hold up and the attention to detail just isn’t there . The glazing tears away . Peeling leather / corner wear in small time frames and the gold on the hardware rubs away like it’s a scratch off lottery ticket half the time . It’s a shame though because the designs are very much in line with my personal style .

Hi Sergio! You made such a good point! I never thought of it like this, why LV is more prestigious due to not being able to purchase them outside of boutiques like every other luxury brand even perfumes! YSL is definitely one of my tops, and, most of their bags we’re paying for are Leather, whereas you can also pay for the same price for Canvas LV’s or Gucci too…which doesn’t seem right to be paying such a high price for canvas, don’t get me wrong i have them LOL but just sometimes i tilt my own head like GIRL really? And I’m like “yes, i like what i like” lol…but thank you for this conversation! It’s going to be interesting how they do once they pull all inventory from big stores to sell only in their boutiques. It’s sad, but I get where they’re trying to go with it. Thanks for this discussion Sergio! You’re the best!

I purchased one ysl on sale. My job has been talking about extreme budget cuts and you know what that means. I think a lot of people are cutting back because there have been tons of layoffs. I saw them at Nordies, too, while I was in LA last week. Came back to MD, and I didn't see them. Instead, I got mine from The Real Real. Definitely paid more than the price they quoted at Nordstrom, but my local store didn't have the bag I wanted and they aren't on sale on the website.

Louis Vuitton doesn’t license their fragrances like Chanel etc. LVMH owns all of their fragrance brands. IMO this doesn’t make LV more exclusive as it’s the most played out branding. I agree with you on the preference of YSL over the rest.

I disagree with the statement you made in minute twelve. I don’t think that most brands are trying to get to the Louis Vuitton level and only sell in their flagship stores. The reason why I say that is because this year has been a very low buy year for most people, including the luxury market. I go into my Chanel boutique and they tell me they have so much inventory because people are not buying anymore. That is perhaps the reason why we are seeing huge discounts in department stores on YSL, Balmain, Celine, etc. Luxury companies would not be able to sustain themselves if they did not sell in department stores.

NM had Black Friday sales 50% off certain YSL bags. I got my daughter for Xmas the mini camera bag with matte black hardware. Regularly 1690, half off that. It did not show up on the NM site. I went on google and typed in the name and sale after it. It was a direct NM link. I felt I ordered a bag from Amazon lol . Neiman and Marcus is amazing with the packages they still sell LV and many designer brands . What it would affect me it would be another stupid price increase . But I think I have enough .and I rather remodel my home and think about the future instead of spending in more bags when I have enough . I’ve changed a lot and I’m proud of myself .
