Who choreographed this? Why, the one & only Koharu Sugawara & Kasper. They've both worked multiple times with Taemin over the years. She did his Sayonara Hitori (2016), Flame of Love (2017), Move (2017), SHINee's (Taemin's group) Good Evening (2018), Want (2019), & finally Criminal (2020). You can actually see Taemin & Koharu dance the Sayonara Hitori & Move routine together! You can see them together for Sayonara Hitori in the dance practice & a dance competition show called Hit the Stage where Taemin actually won that ep. For Move, you can see them together on Move MV #3 Duo Version.

I knew it! It's such a Koharu dance - her and Taemin are an absolute genius combo. I hope at some point he reacts to the dance practice of Sayonara Hitori where Taemin had only been learning the choreography a day and she's the choreographer, and they're dancing the same choreography and his dancing is just as good as hers (imo).

@@Bucherviews Exactly! That Sayonara Hitori dance practice is fantastic. Taemin's "novice/unpolished" (I say that because he literally learned it in 3 hrs. before filming those videos. His execution was anything but unpolished lol) movements don't get outshined by Koharu's which is just beyond amazing.

Taemin is known as one of, if not THE best dancer in Kpop. He's really versatile in his dancing and constrantly changes his dancing style. You should really check out more of his dances. I recommend 'IDEA' and 'Famous', but all his dances are really great.

So a little bit of context, I believe the shooting for The Stage performance was actually before the filming of the dance practice. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Since the fans wanted the dance practice, he filmed it late night on a really busy day when he had radio shows & other things scheduled. Taemin rarely goes all out on dance practice videos that he releases. It's also the same case when he's dancing in the SuperM "dance practice" videos. That's just him having fun lol. And I believe the backup dancers didn't really give it their all in this particular dance practice either. When he's really practicing, you'll see it in his serious expression, sweaty clothes etc. in behind the scenes videos and things like that. That's why with every Taemin "dance practice," you have to check out the live performances to really see what the choreo & execution are meant to be like. Move & Want "dance practice" videos are really good examples of that when compared to the live stages.

Taemin has always been known for saving his energy for where it counts the most -- for live performances and for filming MVs -- dance practices for him are literally dance practices, so he is just allowing himself to feel the dance and get in the groove. He is less worried about being spot on exact, and more about showing everyone the feel of the choreography and the story behind the dance. If you really get into Taemin and watch a lot of his live performances or see him in concert you will see how much of an expert he is. Seeing as he is also singing live almost 100% of the time while performing for 3+ hours, you will notice moments where he conserves his energy, only to release it full out during the most intense parts of the dance or performance. He has became known as the best in the industry for a reason. And although there will always be elements of Taemin's dances that are very much signature Taemin, all of his dances tell a story, so they are meant to be different from each other because each song tells a different story. As a dancer yourself, you should know that dance practice footage is always different then a live performance. You can't tell me that you are flawless in your dance practice videos and that your live performances look no different. A dance practice is a dance practice and a live performance is a live performance. Taemin doesn't need to expend every ounce of his energy, to show us how brillant of a dancer he is. With even 50% effort, Taemin is better than most dancers who are trying their hardest. No one can pull off a Taemin dance exactly the way Taemin does it -- it's never as intricate or precise as he does it -- no matter how talented of a dancer you are. As a member of SHINee, Taemin has trained his entire career to be able to pull off this type of intense and intricate dancing while singing live and always sounding flawless the whole time. That is what SHINee are known for. So not only is Taemin an amazing dancer, but he is also one of the best singers in the industry, and his group SHINee make up one of the top groups, that everyone looks up to and dreams of even coming close to being as good as. What you just witnessed was art in its purest form.

i'm so glad you've finally reacted to taemin. with how meticulous you are, you would love to see taemin's dances just because he's a very detail-oriented person himself. he's known for his great control of his body that even when other great dancers cover his dances, they don't come close to him and their dances look so different from his because of the control. if you're blown away by this song, you would love and enjoy press your number, drip drop, danger (he worked with ian eastwood for this), and idea (his most recent song). Fact Dump: - The choreographers for this dance are Koharu Sugawara (@kokokoharu) and Kasper (@kasper0524). - Kasper also co-choreographed Lay's Honey and can be seen as his backup dancer in the dance practice video. - The female backup dancers in Criminal were also backup dancers for Chungha's Stay Tonight and one them choreographed that dance too (Rian @_rianess)

Fun fact, the dancer with the black hair you pointed out for doing the nice dip early in the analysis is actually Chungha’s primary choreographer (Stay Tonight and several others included)! Her name is Rian and she has a KZbin Channel called Dancer Rian’s Jobby Hobby if you wanna watch her! Also, you HAVE to watch Move by Taemin. I am so glad you finally reacted to Taemin! Criminal was the song from the Act 1 of his 3rd album. The continuation of the song is IDEA, the title track from the Act 2 of the same album. If you liked the unique shapes, the difference of texture in the dance, you will love IDEA. You really should react to it. IDEA's choreography is just crazy.

This may be irrelevent but Im really glad that you reacted to "The Stage" version. The series is an initiative started by another artist (Shindong from Super Junior) from the same entertaiment company (SM entertainment) as Taemin. He wanted to work more on his craft and proposed to the company about this program. His stuff are a bit hit or miss. Some of them are AMAZING (eg Chocolate by Changmin and Obsession by EXO especially their mashup ver) but some were really bad (eg Tiger Inside by SuperM and Kick It by NCT 127). Just some bg info on it lmao nothing else

Fun facts: Taemin learned popping and locking first, before he joined SM and became a member of SHINee, themselves the best dancers and singers in kpop. As for his dancers, he doesn't require perfection - he wants them to do the choreo in their own style, as much as they are able as background dancers. His girl squad in Move - I can't even. And his Japanese squad? Again, I can't even. Choreographers for this video are Ian Eastwood, Kasper, and Sugawara Koharu (Move v1, Move v 3). Butt Girl is Rian, who is Chungha's choreographer. He performed this and his song IDEA this morning at the KBS song festival. Taemin’s choreo is always done by Rino Nakasone (Gwen Stefani, beat freaks, Britney Spears, justin Bieber, and more). Taemin also has performances for his song HEAVEN which is performed on a slanted stage, door in which he’s in bondage tied to the stage, and dozens of other phenomenal pieces. He’s a 11 year industry vet and his group SHINee are performance kings. They’re known as princes of kpop in Japan and he draws most of his solo inspo from Michael Jackson and a lot of anime/manga he’s into.

Compared to Lay, Taemin is the most senior, and they are in the same company.. Lay used to be a back up dancer of Taemin's band, SHINee.. Chungha on the other hand, Taemin's back up whom you called an attention earlier due to her butt sticking out is actually Chungha's choreographer. Taemin is already a legend, he is the first soloist from a boy group band of SM and he is called a legendary male soloist of Kpop. Most of Taemin's back up dancers are professionals and choreographers. His company has to set an audition just to bring them in as his dance crew to keep up with his dance and energy level. But even though Taemin is the most respected artist especially with the other idols/artists, he is still humble, shy and respectful. He has a cool and sweet image in person, but on stage he is a monster, dark and actor. His duality is insane. Thank you for sharing with us your review/commentary as a pro dancer. We also are learning from you. The choreographers on this are Koharu Sugawara (famous Japanese dancer) and Kasper (in-house choreographer of SM Entertainment, he also choreographed Lay's 'Lit').

That's our boy, he's considered one of the best if not the best of dancers in kpop. His base is popping and the thriller-esque vibe you're picking up is spot on. His biggest influence is Michael. You should definitely check out his Idea choreography it's more intense. Or famous if you want to see more of his popping.

Taemin, Chungha and Lay are some of the people who have i would say the most input into every aspect of their performance, be it choreography, wardrobe/styling or music video/stage direction. taemin himself has been in the industry for 12 years now (6 of which as a solo artist as well as performing in shinee and superm) and he's basically a god at this point. the jackson influences, some popping and "awkward" angles are definitely staples of the taemin style, even if there is great variation between his choreographies. he also is one of the people who truly "switch on" when performing as compared to practice all the things people are recommending are wonderful. Move is a really interesting exploration into gender expression in dance, Famous is definitely super unique and has lots of really great formation changes (and his japanese crew is dope), i would personally add Sayonara Hitori as another example of a style he is capable of (more contemporary influenced(?), interestingly has the same choreographer as Move) these reactions and analyses are great by the way, it's one thing to know that something looks cool and another to know why it looks cool and having someone who actually understands choreographing go over the footage helps a lot with that. plus i really appreciate the honesty and enthusiasm

the choreographer that work with taemin in criminal is Casper ( insta : @casper0524), it said koharu sugawara (@kokoharu) also participated on it (she choreograph taemin : MOVE and sayonara hitori etc) Taemin has been working with many choreographers who are all insane and they dance with him too especially Casper and Koharu. check his latest performance IDEA, is crazier, lot of surprise move hit after hit is different, it mixes a lot of choreographers movement: Keone Madrid, Bailey Sok, Ian Eastwood and Casper And actually, Taemin back up dancers are not just ordinary dancers, they are famous dancers and choreographers (exp : @_rianess (chungha choreographer) @_simeez etc) The other performance you need to check is TAEMIN japan release, his Japanese dancers are on another level, check FAMOUS

She's got a KZbin channel which documents her choreography processes/early dance practices for all of chungha's releases, some videos with subs some without, you should check it out!

Taemin is the MASTER of dance. This is pure TPop (Taemin Pop). He's been in the business since 2008 when he debuted at 14 YO. If you haven't reacted to his other new title track from Act 2 of the same album, I strongly recommend you do. Let me help you get to know Taemin and the massive scope of his music. It demonstrates the extreme respect and admiration directors, producers, lyricists, dancers, and other Kpop artists have for Taemin through their own words, articles, and interviews. You also hear about Taemin's work ethic and vision from his own lips. Taemin began his career at the age of 14 when he debuted with the, also legendary, 2nd. gen., Kpop group, SHINee, as their main dancer. They are widely known as the "Princes of Kpop" for their killer live vocals, harmonies, dancing, and performances. Then, in 2019, Taemin was the first idol approached by his company, SM Entertainment, to form the new super group, SuperM, as a collaboration with Capitol Records and Marvel. He is a popping and locking monster and can move each muscle of his body independently. As a totally self-taught dancer (no formal training like many other idols), he attended an open audition for SM Entertainment at the age of 12 and got in on the first try and made the first cut. This is extremely rare and difficult to do. Then, unable to sing due to immature vocal cords, he debuted at 14 as SHINee's main dancer. Nicknamed "Tone Deaf", Taemin worked extremely hard, practicing night and day on his singing and was helped by Onew & Jonghyun, the main vocalists of SHINee, to learn how to sing. In 2014, at the age of 21, Taemin became SM's first-ever male soloist from an active boy group to be given a solo debut. His onstage charisma, persona and success as a part of SHINee made him an immediate success as a soloist. From that moment on, SM dubbed him their "ACE". Taemin also became the first idol to debut four different times in three different generations of Kpop. Through all this, he also managed to get a degree in music and film. Since he cut his teeth with SHINee at such a young age, and with SHINee being the major trendsetters in Kpop, especially in the area of introducing new and experimental music, Taemin is not afraid to be daring, experimental, and smash the traditional cultural norms of Korea. He even demolished the standard cultural gender divisions of dancing when he introduced the song, "Move" in his 2017 comeback. The song boldly proved that men and women can both do the same choreography without the need to segregate. Taemin regularly has both men and women as his backup dancers. The song created quite a stir and even a virus called "The Move Disease" where every commentator, variety show host, and most idols rushed to cover the dance. It's actually still going on three years later. However, no one can quite match Taemin's fluidity and finesse. His dance practice emphasizes his extreme body control & fluidity. There are three things to remember when reading Taemin's lyrics and watching his MVs: 1) Taemin usually has dual meanings for his lyrics: A) take them as you read them and be happy; or B) delve more deeply to reveal the true meaning. 2) Taemin is a Christian (devout Catholic) so there is also usually a lot of religious imagery, symbolism, metaphors, and allusions within his lyrics and MVs. 3) Taemin is DEEP and very intellectual. Much of what we know about the lyrics come from listening to him explain it on interviews and IG LIVEs. The rest is due to our (fans) research. This song is part of his newest album that was released in 3 parts: "Two Kids" (Prologue), "Criminal" (Act I), and "IDEA" (Act 2). They are all linked by a story that must be pieced together by watching all the MVs and reading the lyrics from the 18 songs. The concept for this song is Stockholm Syndrome. "IDEA's" concept is Plato's philosophical Theory of Forms. Yes, these are very deep concepts, but the standard unorthodox and experimental types of concepts that Taemin is famous for. He constantly and unabashedly challenges the standard Korean cultural/societal boundaries. Taemin is a very detail-oriented person, and with every MV/Song/Performance/Concert, he is very involved and his fingerprints are everywhere. However, more so in this comeback than ever before. He personally chose the director for this MV (same one who did "Press Your Number" for him), and he co-directed with him to get his exact vision across. In fact, the key change at the last chorus was Taemin's decision. Taemin also re-wrote lyrics & instrumentals and had input on the set and album design for the MV & entire album. He also teamed up again with Sugawara Koharu & Kasper to help him with choreography. They are all friends and know Taemin's taste and give him the freedom to alter the choreo as he wishes. Koharu has also worked with him on his songs, "Want", "Move", "Sayonara Hitori" and "Flame of Love", as well as SHINee's "Good Evening". His creative influence is now even being felt in SuperM, as he dips his fingers into their choreographies, fashion decisions, and set designs, etc. He just can't keep his hands off anything...for which the other members of SuperM have expressed much gratitude. LOL...and SM basically lets him do whatever he wants because he's their "ACE". All of Taemin's solo MVs are stunning because of those little details and hidden meanings waiting to be found. To see his incredible range as a natural dancer, I believe you would also enjoy his dance practices for "Want", "Move", "Famous", and "Sayonara Hitori" - which is quite different. The Stage is actually an SM Entertainment exclusive for their idols/artists. That's why the performance video looks really good. It started around last year, I think, and the director of this whole The Stage is also a veteran idol. It's honestly better produced than some of the music show stages out there. LOL

Something to note about music shows and live stages in Korea, often times they're compiled of multiple takes (although not always, I don't know about this video in particular) because they're made to broadcast on TV. My understanding is that daily music shows are kind of an all-day thing for groups and soloists, and the purpose of the daily shows is more to promote their new music, and aren't usually tailored to actually show off the whole performance. This is actually why dance practice videos are so popular in kpop, because music shows often do a lot of close ups of members or sometimes have really chaotic camera work so the dance practices is usually where fans get to see full choreo. If a song has an official performance video i'd almost always reccomend that over a live stage if you're focused on the dancing above everything else.
